Short answer: choose SRS if you need its broader documented protocol and format-conversion options; choose Nginx RTMP if its documented push/pull relay model fits your stream and you already operate Nginx. Neither is established as more reliable, faster, or simpler for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Both sit between your encoder or source and YouTube; neither replaces YouTube or guarantees that a broadcast stays up.
What each server does in a YouTube streaming setup
A relay server receives a stream from an encoder or another source, then forwards it to YouTube. YouTube remains the destination and handles playback for viewers watching there. The server must send an ingest stream in a format YouTube accepts. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, in its encoder settings guidance.

SRS and Nginx RTMP are software options for handling stream ingest and relay. SRS also documents several delivery and conversion protocols. That broader feature set matters if the same server has other jobs, such as serving a separate HLS audience; it is not a requirement for simply forwarding a stream to YouTube.

| Decision point | SRS | Nginx RTMP |
|---|---|---|
| Documented protocols and formats | The SRS v6 introduction lists RTMP, WebRTC, HLS, HTTP-FLV, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and GB28181, and describes converting formats such as RTMP or SRT to HLS, HTTP-FLV, or WebRTC. See the SRS introduction. | The cited project page documents RTMP stream relay through push and pull models. See the Nginx RTMP module project. |
| Fit for a YouTube-only relay | Can be considered if the selected configuration supports the required outbound relay path. Its additional protocol options may be useful for other delivery needs. | Can be considered if the selected configuration supports the required relay path. The documented push/pull models are directly relevant to relaying. |
| Existing operational familiarity | A sensible candidate when your deployment already uses SRS or needs its documented protocol options. | An operator already managing Nginx may prefer keeping the relay in a familiar deployment. This is a workflow consideration, not evidence that Nginx RTMP performs better. |
| Comparative reliability, throughput, and simplicity | No controlled SRS-versus-Nginx RTMP benchmark or comparative 24/7 availability study is established by the cited sources. | No controlled SRS-versus-Nginx RTMP benchmark or comparative 24/7 availability study is established by the cited sources. |
For a YouTube-only relay, decide from the exact relay path you need, the systems your team already operates, and how you will monitor and recover the process. Do not treat SRS’s broader protocol list as proof that it is more reliable, faster, or easier; the cited feature descriptions do not establish those comparisons.

Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s ingest guidance
Whichever server you use, configure the encoder and outgoing feed to match YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube’s encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval as the recommendation; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. As one specific example, its current table lists 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. Check the table for the exact combination you plan to send rather than applying that example to other settings.
- Rate control and frame rate: use CBR and stay within the supported frame-rate guidance for your chosen setup.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. That margin is for the total outgoing stream, not just one video or one encoded track. Test the actual feed and watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

Plan the 24/7 operation, not just the relay software
A 24/7 broadcast depends on more than whether the server process starts. Your source must keep producing or supplying video, the network path must remain available, and the relay must reconnect or be restarted appropriately if something fails. You also need a way to notice interruptions rather than assuming the process is healthy because it is still running.
- Source continuity: define what the server should send when a file, playlist, encoder, or upstream feed ends or disappears.
- Network capacity: estimate the total stream bitrate and provide the upload headroom YouTube recommends. Account for other traffic sharing the connection.
- Process supervision: decide how the service is monitored and restarted, and how you will tell a process crash from a YouTube ingest or upstream-source problem.
- Health monitoring: check YouTube’s stream health as well as the relay’s own logs and status. A healthy local process does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Recovery: document who or what responds to a dropped source, relay restart, network failure, or rejected ingest, and test that recovery path.
- Local recording and archives: if you need a durable archive, plan one separately instead of relying on a 24/7 YouTube broadcast being saved as one video.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup instructions. That does not establish that one unbroken 24-hour stream will be archived as a single video. If archives matter, check YouTube’s current limits and plan local recording or deliberate stream segmentation.

Version and delivery caveats
The SRS introduction cited here is versioned v6 documentation. It identifies version 6.0 as stable while also containing a note that appears to refer to development status; check the current documentation for the exact version you plan to deploy. The search surfaced v5 and v8 documentation as well, so do not mix version-specific commands or configuration examples without verifying them against your chosen release. SRS’s HLS documentation describes RTMP publishing and HLS playback, including that initial segments take time to appear. HLS output is relevant if you also need separate HLS delivery, not simply to send RTMP(S) to YouTube.
The cited Nginx RTMP project page documents relay patterns, but it does not establish a current release cadence, exact supported Nginx versions, or a reproducible high-availability recipe. Check its current project instructions for the versions and deployment details you intend to use before building around it.

Common failure checks
| Symptom | What to check first |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming stream | Confirm the destination URL, stream key, protocol, and encoder settings. Check the relay’s logs to see whether it receives the source and whether the outbound connection is accepted. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed drops frames | Compare the actual outgoing bitrate with the encoder settings and available upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above total stream bitrate; check competing network traffic and Live Control Room health. |
| Video stops when the source or encoder ends | Check whether the source is intended to loop or whether the relay has a defined fallback and reconnect behavior. A relay cannot provide continuous content if its source has ended and no fallback is configured. |
| Broadcast does not recover after a disconnect | Separate source, network, relay-process, and YouTube-ingest failures. Review logs and process supervision, then test the documented restart or reconnect path rather than assuming either server automatically restores every failure. |
| Expected HLS playback is delayed | If you are using SRS for separate HLS delivery, its HLS documentation notes that initial segments take time to appear. This is distinct from the RTMP(S) feed sent to YouTube. |
| A 24-hour broadcast is missing as one archive | YouTube’s cited archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not promise one archive for a continuous stream longer than that. Use local recording or plan intentional segments if an archive is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded video live on YouTube rather than operate your own relay server, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it runs an always-on stream from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free with no card. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe first day is free with no card; each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing period changes. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
