For inbound SRT contribution, Wowza Streaming Engine’s listener mode is the simplest starting point: configure the listener once, allow its UDP port through your firewall, and have the SRT source connect to Wowza with the correct publish stream ID and matching encryption settings. For outbound SRT delivery, the roles reverse: Wowza calls the destination. Reliable low-latency operation depends on tuning the SRT buffer for the actual network path—not choosing the smallest number—and remembering that SRT latency is only one part of camera-to-display delay.
Check version support and choose the workflow
Wowza’s current SRT ingest guide says Streaming Engine 4.7.3 and later supports ingesting MPEG-TS-packaged SRT streams and SRT version 1.5.0 or later. Verify the installed Engine and source versions before configuring anything. Wowza also notes that new Windows installations of Engine 4.8.0 or later may need the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for certain SRT workflows.

The inbound listener and outbound Stream Target are different workflows. Do not reuse their caller/listener roles interchangeably.

Set up inbound SRT with listener mode
- Create a live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create or select the live application that will receive the contribution stream.
- Configure the listener. Make the one-time listener configuration in Server.xml, VHost.xml, and Application.xml, following Wowza’s SRT ingest guide for the installed Engine version. Use the listener port configured in VHost.xml.
- Allow the network path. Permit the configured SRT UDP port through the host firewall and any network firewall or security group between the source and Wowza. Listener mode reduces the number of ports to manage; it does not remove the need to open the listener’s port.
- Set the source to caller mode. Point the SRT encoder or software publisher at the public IP address or hostname of the Wowza listener and its configured port. Send MPEG-TS and use a publish stream ID that names the target application, instance, and stream.
- Match encryption settings, if enabled. For a global passphrase, enter the same value at the source and in Wowza’s global configuration. For per-user encryption, use the identity and credentials configured on the server. Keep real passphrases out of published instructions and logs.
- Verify ingest and playback. Check Incoming Streams for an active stream, then test playback through an output protocol configured for that application.
Caller URI shape
Wowza’s example caller URI follows this general pattern. Replace every placeholder with your own values, and do not publish a real secret:

The host, configured listener port, stream name, application, and stream ID are the key connection details in Wowza’s example. The passphrase and key length are optional if encryption is not used. When encryption is enabled, both sides must agree. Wowza’s example uses pbkeylen=32; its documentation lists 0/default, 16, 24, and 32 bytes. Confirm that the source supports the selected value and configure it consistently.

Configure outbound delivery with an SRT Stream Target
- Use a Live application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the application that provides the source stream.
- Add an SRT target. Under Generic Target Destinations, add an SRT Stream Target.
- Set the destination and source. Choose the Wowza source stream and enter the destination host and port, along with the transport options expected by the remote listener.
- Choose latency and payload settings. Wowza documents the target latency field for Engine 4.8.5 and later. Its minimum supported value is 120 ms; the default is 400 ms when no value is specified. Wowza recommends latency at 2.5 times network round-trip time (RTT). If the peers configure different values, the higher value applies to both. For MPEG-TS, use Wowza’s default 1500-byte payload size.
- Confirm the connection. Ensure Wowza is acting as caller and the destination is prepared as a listener on the specified host and port.
Choose SRT latency for the network, not just the target number
SRT latency is the transport buffer time between SRT peers, not glass-to-glass latency. The complete path can also include camera capture, encoder buffering and lookahead, multiplexing, other network and application processing, transcoding, playback buffering, decoding, and display. A low SRT setting alone cannot establish a low end-to-end delay.

SRT uses UDP, AES encryption for media payloads, and ARQ retransmission requests for missing packets. Timestamp-based delivery buffers packets so they can be delivered on a regular schedule while leaving time for retransmission. That recovery needs both time and network capacity: a lost packet that arrives after its delivery deadline cannot help the stream. The receiver buffer must be large enough for the bitrate and chosen delay. The negotiated receiver buffering delay is governed by the greater of the local receive-latency setting and the peer’s latency request.

- Start with a documented baseline. For an outbound Wowza Stream Target, use the documented default or Wowza’s RTT-based recommendation. For inbound, follow the settings supported by the installed Engine and source rather than assuming an outbound target setting applies identically.
- Measure the real route. Observe RTT, jitter, and packet loss between the actual source and server, ideally under representative network load.
- Adjust in controlled increments. Lower the buffer gradually only while checking for late-packet drops, artifacts, and reconnects. Increase it if jitter or loss recovery causes interruptions.
- Test the complete path. Test on the actual route and under realistic load. If reporting a latency figure, specify what was measured; the SRT buffer setting is not an end-to-end measurement.
There is no universal SRT latency value established for every internet path. More buffer can give retransmissions time to arrive but adds transport delay; less buffer reduces that allowance and can make a lossy or jittery path less tolerant.
Troubleshoot common SRT ingest and delivery problems

| Encryption handshake fails | Verify that passphrase and key length match at both ends, and check whether Wowza is configured for global or per-user credentials. Do not expose the passphrase while troubleshooting. |
| Stutter, artifacts, or late-packet drops | Measure RTT, jitter, and loss on the actual path. Increase available SRT latency in controlled steps and check sender and receiver buffer behavior; one setting will not suit every route. |
| Overall delay remains high despite a low SRT setting | Inspect encoder lookahead and frame buffering, transcoding, playback protocol and player buffer, decode, and display delay. Those stages are outside the SRT latency number. |
| Outbound target does not connect | Confirm Wowza is configured as caller and that the destination host, port, latency, and remote listener expectations agree. |
