To use PS Remote Play on a Windows PC, install the official PS Remote Play app, connect a supported controller with a USB cable, sign in with the same PlayStation account used on your console, and select PS5 or PS4. Enable Remote Play on the console first. For a stable session, use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and at least 15 Mbps upload and download; 5 Mbps in each direction is the minimum PlayStation requirement.

What you need before installing PS Remote Play

Remote Play streams your console’s picture and sound to the PC while sending controller input back over your network. The console must be powered on or configured to wake from Rest Mode, and the PC must have a reliable internet connection.

Windows requirements

Requirement PlayStation specification
Operating system Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11
Processor 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later
Memory At least 2 GB RAM
Storage At least 100 MB available space
Display 1,024 × 768 resolution or higher
Other hardware Sound card and an available USB port

The same PS Remote Play installation is used for PS5 and PS4. A DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller is supported on Windows PC and Mac. For the PC connection described by PlayStation, connect the controller with a USB cable. Voice chat also requires a microphone.

Network baseline

Connection speed What it means
5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download PlayStation’s minimum required speed in both directions
15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download PlayStation’s recommendation for best performance

These are simultaneous upload and download requirements, not a single combined figure. A speed test can show that your line meets the number while congestion, weak Wi-Fi, or a restrictive NAT still causes lag or failed discovery.

  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Install the app and connect your controller

  1. Download and install the official PS Remote Play app for Windows.
  2. Connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 to the PC with a USB cable. Leave it connected while starting the session.
  3. Open PS Remote Play and sign in with the same PlayStation account that is used on the PS5 or PS4.
  4. Choose PS5 or PS4 in the app. The app searches for a console associated with your account.
  5. Select the console when it appears and wait for the stream to start.

Automatic discovery works best when the PC and console are on the same home network. If the console is not listed, do not repeatedly reinstall the app before checking the console settings, account, and network. Manual pairing is usually the faster next step.

Enable Remote Play on the console

PS5 setup

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
  2. Turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. For connections while the PS5 is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
  5. Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

The two Rest Mode options are separate from the main Remote Play switch. Remote Play must be enabled, and the network-wake settings must be enabled if you expect the PC to wake the console remotely.

PS4 setup

  1. Open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and enable Enable Remote Play.
  2. Open Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 and select Activate.
  3. For Rest Mode access, open the PS4 Rest Mode settings and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
  4. Enable Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.

The PS4 activation step matters because the console must be activated as the primary PS4 for the account before the expected Remote Play connection can be established.

Automatic discovery versus manual pairing

Method Use it when What happens
Automatic discovery The console and PC are already configured and visible on the same network The app searches for the console after sign-in
Manual pairing The console is not found, discovery times out, or you are setting up a console that is not appearing automatically The console displays a temporary number that you enter in the PC app

Pair a PS5 manually

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device.
  2. Leave that screen open and note the number shown.
  3. In the PS Remote Play app on the PC, choose the option to register or pair a console manually.
  4. Enter the displayed number and submit it.

Pair a PS4 manually

  1. On the PS4, open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Add Device.
  2. Note the number displayed by the console.
  3. In the PC app, select manual registration and enter that number.
  4. Submit the code and wait for the console to be associated with the app.

Manual pairing does not replace the account requirement. The app still needs the same PlayStation account as the console, and both devices still need network access.

Choose the network connection that gives Remote Play the best chance

Ethernet is the first choice

A wired Ethernet connection avoids the radio interference and signal fluctuations common to Wi-Fi. If possible, connect the PC by Ethernet and keep the console on Ethernet as well. Wiring only one device can still help, but the most consistent path is wired at both ends.

Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when wiring is impractical

On Wi-Fi, use the 5 GHz band when the PC and router are close enough for a strong signal. Restart the device before troubleshooting, confirm that other internet services work, and run a speed test from the location where the PC is used. A high result beside the router does not prove that the PC receives the same throughput.

  • Pause large downloads and uploads on the PC and console.
  • Disconnect or temporarily stop bandwidth-heavy devices on the same network.
  • Move the PC closer to the router or improve the wireless signal path.
  • Prefer Ethernet if 5 GHz performance fluctuates or the connection drops through walls.

Understand NAT and UDP port 8572

Remote Play uses UDP port 8572. Router configuration may be required when the connection cannot be established, particularly across restrictive network arrangements. NAT Type 3 can prevent Remote Play. In the Windows app, check NAT information under Information; on a Mac, check Preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NAT remediation is separate from replacing the app or repairing Visual C++. If the app launches normally but cannot connect, investigate NAT and the router after confirming the console settings and account.

Fix “PS Remote Play cannot find my console”

  1. Confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the PS5 or PS4 and that the correct Rest Mode options are enabled if the console is sleeping.
  2. Sign out of the PC app and sign back in with the account used on the console.
  3. Put the PC and console on the same local network, preferably with Ethernet or strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  4. Restart the console, PC, and network equipment, then try automatic discovery again.
  5. Use manual pairing: Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device on PS5, or Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Add Device on PS4.
  6. Check whether antivirus or the Windows firewall is blocking the app. Add an exception for PS Remote Play only if your security software identifies it as blocked.
  7. If the network reports NAT Type 3, review the router configuration and UDP port 8572.

Do not assume a failed search means the console is offline. Discovery can fail while the console is reachable through manual registration, and a restrictive firewall can block discovery without affecting unrelated web browsing.

Fix sign-in and startup failures

Sign-in fails

  • Check the PlayStation status page for an account or service outage.
  • Verify that the PC has internet access in a browser or another app.
  • Close and reopen PS Remote Play, then restart the PC if the sign-in screen remains stuck.
  • Sign out and back in, making sure the account exactly matches the one configured on the console.

The app starts but the session will not begin

  • Confirm the console-side Remote Play switch and the PS4 primary-console activation.
  • Check the network speed in both directions against the 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
  • Try manual pairing instead of automatic discovery.
  • Check firewall and antivirus rules.
  • Reinstall PS Remote Play if the installation itself appears damaged.

Fix crashes on a Windows PC

Use the least disruptive remedy first, then move to a clean reinstall. The following sequence targets the common PC-side failure modes identified in PlayStation support guidance.

  1. Restart Windows and launch PS Remote Play again.
  2. Close the app and delete the PS Remote Play folder in the Windows local AppData directory.
  3. Reinstall the latest version of PS Remote Play.
  4. Repair or reinstall the latest supported x86 Visual C++ package.
  5. Restart Windows and test again with the controller connected by USB.

Deleting the local AppData folder removes local application data; it does not change the console’s games or account. If you use a managed PC, security policy may prevent this cleanup or the Visual C++ repair, in which case an administrator may be required.

Fix a blank screen or missing video

  1. Restart the PC and console, then reconnect the controller by USB.
  2. Close PS Remote Play completely and start a new session.
  3. Reinstall the app if the blank screen persists.
  4. Update the PC’s graphics driver and restart Windows.
  5. Retry with competing downloads and bandwidth-heavy devices paused.

A blank stream can be caused by a damaged app installation or an outdated graphics driver even when sign-in succeeds. If the app connects but video remains unavailable after those steps, check the network path and firewall rather than changing the PlayStation account.

Controller, microphone, and game restrictions

Supported controllers

PlayStation lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers for Windows PC and Mac. Connect the controller to the computer with a USB cable for the setup described here. A microphone is required for voice chat.

Content that cannot be used through Remote Play

  • Games that require PS VR2, PS VR, or PlayStation Camera.
  • Share Play.
  • PlayStation Plus Premium streaming.
  • PS4 broadcasting.
  • Blu-ray and DVD playback.
  • Virtual-reality modes.
  • Music and some video services.

These restrictions are simultaneous-use restrictions: the listed functions cannot be used at the same time as Remote Play. A compatible game that does not require the excluded hardware or service can still be streamed normally.

Which fix should you try first?

Symptom First action Next action
Console is not discovered Put PC and console on the same network and verify Remote Play settings Manual pairing, then firewall and NAT checks
Connection is choppy Pause competing traffic and switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi Check that upload and download meet 15 Mbps recommendation
Connection fails despite good speed Check NAT type in the app Investigate UDP port 8572 and router restrictions
Sign-in fails Check PlayStation service status and account match Restart, sign out, and sign back in
App crashes Restart Windows Delete local AppData folder, reinstall, then repair x86 Visual C++
Blank screen Restart and reinstall the app Update the graphics driver

A reliable setup checklist

  • Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 is installed.
  • The PC meets the processor, RAM, storage, display, sound-card, and USB requirements.
  • PS Remote Play is installed from the official PlayStation download.
  • A supported controller is connected by USB.
  • The same PlayStation account is used on the PC app and console.
  • Remote Play is enabled on the console.
  • Rest Mode internet and network-wake settings are enabled when remote wake is needed.
  • Upload and download speeds are at least 5 Mbps; 15 Mbps in both directions is preferred.
  • Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi is being used, with competing traffic paused.
  • Manual pairing, firewall, NAT, UDP 8572, Visual C++, and graphics-driver checks are available if the first connection fails.

Start with the console settings, account, controller, and network path before changing Windows components. Most connection failures become easier to isolate when you determine whether the problem is discovery, sign-in, transport (NAT and UDP), or local app rendering.
