The NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro can either play Plex from a server you already use or host Plex Media Server itself. To set it up as a player, sign in to Plex and choose your server. To host a server on the SHIELD, enable Plex Media Server in the Plex app, grant storage access, then use Plex Web App to add your media folders.
Choose how you want to use the SHIELD
The SHIELD TV Pro includes the Plex app and Plex Media Server, but hosting a server is optional. If your movies and shows are already served by a computer, NAS, or another Plex device, use the SHIELD as a player and select that existing server. Enable the SHIELD’s server only if you want it to make media available to your other Plex clients.

Plex’s [SHIELD setup guide] describes the hosted version as the full Plex Media Server. These instructions are for the SHIELD TV Pro; Plex says Plex Media Server is not available on the 2019 SHIELD TV tube model.

Prepare the SHIELD and sign in
- Connect the SHIELD to your TV or monitor over HDMI and connect its power supply.
- Connect it to the internet over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then complete device setup and sign in with the required Google account.
- Open the Plex app on the SHIELD and sign in to your Plex account. Plex’s [NVIDIA setup instructions] also describe linking the app to your account and choosing which Plex server it should access.
Set up the SHIELD as a Plex player
If you already have a Plex Media Server, choose it when prompted in the app. The SHIELD will then act as a client: it plays media from that server rather than hosting a separate library itself. If your server is not listed, confirm that it is running and that the SHIELD can reach it on your network.

Enable Plex Media Server on the SHIELD
- During the Plex app’s first-run setup, accept the prompt to enable Plex Media Server. If you initially set up the app as a player, look for the server option in Plex’s SHIELD setup flow.
- Choose whether Plex should create its default libraries. The defaults correspond to Home Videos, Movies, Music, Photos, and TV Shows. You can add media or edit libraries later.
- Grant the storage permission Plex requests so it can save server and library information.
- Wait for initial setup to finish. Plex says this can take a few minutes.
- On a device on the same network, open Plex Web App to finish managing the server and adding media folders. Use Plex’s hosted web app or open the SHIELD’s local server web interface from a browser on your network; NVIDIA also documents completing server setup through Plex Web App on a same-network device.
Choose where your media and server data will live
When you add a library in Plex Web App, select the folder that actually contains the media. Plex supports SHIELD internal storage, an attached USB drive, and network locations mounted over SMB. Your choice affects capacity, permissions, and whether the network connection is dependable enough for playback.
| Storage location | What to consider |
|---|---|
| SHIELD internal storage | Convenient for a smaller library, but check available capacity. Plex server data includes databases and metadata as well as media-related information, and the space required varies with library size and enabled features. |
| USB storage | An optional USB 3.0 drive can provide room for media or additional capacity. For removable storage, Plex creates a special NVIDIA_SHIELD folder; only that folder and its subfolders are writable. Choose a writable library location if you plan to save optimized versions or DVR recordings. |
| Network storage over SMB | The network device must support SMB. You may need to configure a username and password with the correct permissions before the SHIELD can access the share. |
Plex also documents moving server data to internal system storage, user-accessible internal storage, or removable storage. That is an optional storage-management task, not a required part of initial setup. See Plex’s [instructions for choosing a server-data location] and [storage guidance for SHIELD].

Understand playback, transcoding, and storage limits
Plex can direct-play compatible media, avoiding the extra work of converting it. When a device cannot play a file as stored, Plex may need to transcode it. The workload depends on the file’s format, bitrate and resolution, the number of simultaneous streams, and how many streams need transcoding.
- Plex says SHIELD hardware acceleration supports decoding H.264, H.265/HEVC, and MPEG 2 for transcoding, plus hardware H.264 encoding. Other source formats can reduce performance when transcoding is necessary.
- If subtitles must be burned into the video, hardware encoding is unavailable and CPU transcoding may be slower.
- Transcoding, syncing, and optimization can require temporary space on SHIELD internal storage. Plex warns that some large, high-bitrate files may require more than 16 GB of temporary free space.
Plex’s limitations article says SHIELD supports “at least 2-3 simultaneous transcodes” in most cases, but this is conditional guidance, not a guarantee for every media library or workload. The article was last modified March 17, 2021, so treat the figure as a qualified estimate rather than a current performance benchmark. See [Plex’s hardware-acceleration and SHIELD limitations guidance].

Configure remote access only if you need it
Remote Access is an optional Plex feature for making your SHIELD-hosted server available when you are away from home. Enable it from the server settings in Plex Web App if you need off-network access. Whether it works depends on your router and internet connection; enabling the setting does not guarantee that every network can accept remote connections. For local playback at home, remote access is not required.
Plex server updates for SHIELD are distributed through Google Play; Plex does not offer arbitrary server version updates or downgrades through this setup flow.
