HBO Max is relevant because Paramount later agreed to acquire WBD, the company associated with HBO Max. Paramount has said it intends to combine Paramount+ and HBO Max and has discussed consolidating their streaming technology. That is a stated plan, not confirmation that accounts, apps, or subscriptions have already been combined (Paramount’s March 2, 2026 investor-call transcript; Axios, March 2, 2026).

Why the two mergers are easy to confuse
There are two separate transactions. Skydance’s merger with Paramount Global closed in 2025. The WBD deal was announced in 2026 and concerns the proposed combination of the companies behind Paramount+ and HBO Max. The second transaction—not the completed Skydance merger—is the reason subscribers are asking whether the services might eventually be combined.

What Paramount has said about combining the services
In its February 2026 announcement of the proposed WBD transaction, Paramount CEO David Ellison said: “Combining the streaming services will enhance competition and deliver viewers a truly compelling offer.” The statement explains the company’s case for the deal; it does not set out what will happen to an existing subscriber’s plan, bill, or account (Paramount’s announcement).
In a March 2 investor-call transcript, Paramount also discussed consolidating the streaming technology stacks for Paramount+ and HBO Max. A technology consolidation can be part of a service combination, but the transcript does not provide a customer migration schedule or instructions.

What is not yet specified for subscribers
The cited company announcements and transcript do not establish whether existing subscribers will keep separate accounts, whether billing will transfer, whether prices or plans will change, whether one service will keep its name, or whether customers will need a different app. They also do not give a date for any customer-facing change.

What to check before changing or cancelling a subscription
- Look for an official notice. Check messages from the service and the account or help pages for the provider that bills you.
- Confirm what you are paying for. Paramount+ and HBO Max are currently discussed as services intended for combination; the cited materials do not specify future plans, prices, or ad tiers.
- Check the practical details in any announced offer. Look for billing provider and renewal date, cancellation terms, included content, account and profile transfers, and the app or devices required.
- Do not cancel solely because of the merger announcement. The available sources do not say that either existing subscription has already been migrated or discontinued.
What the announced subscriber figures do—and do not—mean
Axios reported that a combined streamer would have over 210 million subscribers, citing company filings. That figure describes reported scale, not a promise that each Paramount+ or HBO Max subscriber will retain access, receive a particular plan, or pay a particular price (Axios). Similarly, Paramount described a combined company film library of more than 15,000 titles in proposed-deal materials; that corporate library figure is not a count of titles available to any particular streaming subscriber (Paramount).
