To set up Instagram parental supervision, go to Meta Family Center’s supervision page, follow the current prompts to send an invitation, and have your teen accept it. Supervision does not begin until the invitation is accepted. A parent or teen can start the invitation, but both need Instagram accounts and the teen must be 13–17 while the parent is over 18.
What you need before you start
- Eligible accounts: The teen must be 13–17 and the parent must be over 18. Both need an Instagram account.
- Teen’s app: The teen needs the latest version of Instagram on an iPhone or Android device. The parent can use the latest app or visit Instagram in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Agreement: Both people must agree to supervision. A pending invitation does not activate it.
- Account limits: Only one parent can supervise a teen’s Instagram account. If the teen uses more than one account, set up supervision for each account separately.

Set up supervision
- On the parent’s device, open familycenter.meta.com/supervision.
- Follow the live setup prompts to send a supervision invitation to the teen’s Instagram account. The teen can also initiate an invitation for the parent.
- Have the teen accept the invitation. If the teen initiated it, they must confirm that the parent who accepted is the intended supervising person.
- Wait for acceptance. Supervision starts only after the invitation is accepted.
- If the invitation is not accepted within 48 hours, it expires; create and send a new one.
- Repeat the process for each additional Instagram account the teen wants supervised.
Meta currently directs families to Family Center for setup, but its accessible Help Center guidance does not establish a reliable, current sequence of in-app button labels. Follow the prompts shown on the live page rather than relying on older instructions that name specific Settings menus. Meta’s May 2026 Family Center announcement also says parents can send one invitation covering a teen across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger.

What parents can see and manage
Supervision provides selected visibility and controls; it should not be understood as access to read a teen’s private messages. Meta describes these tools as a way for parents to view certain account activity and manage time on the service.

- Account connections: View who the teen follows and who follows them; later updates added visibility into mutual-friend counts.
- Notifications: Choose which supervision notifications to receive and how often. A parent may also be notified if a teen chooses to share that they reported someone.
- General interest topics: View broad topics that shape the teen’s Instagram recommendations and tap an interest for more context.
Meta’s original Family Center announcement introduced time, reporting, and connection insights; its 2023 time-management update described later supervision features. The interest-topic feature was announced in May 2026 and is available globally in English. Meta said notifications when a teen adds a new interest would begin in select markets, so that alert should not be assumed to be available everywhere.
Feature availability can vary
Some supervision tools depend on language, market, or rollout status. For example, Meta’s June 2026 safety update described alerts to supervising parents when a teen repeatedly searches for suicide- or self-harm-related terms within a short period. At the time of that announcement, the alert had rolled out to supervising parents in the EU, Brazil, and India; it is not a universal availability promise.

Meta also said the number of US teens enrolled in Instagram supervision had more than doubled since the prior year, but did not provide an absolute count or a defined measurement interval. That statement does not establish that supervision itself improves safety or wellbeing.

If the invitation or setup does not work
- The invite is no longer valid: Invitations expire after 48 hours, so send a fresh one.
- The teen has not accepted: Check that the invitation reached the correct Instagram account and ask the teen to accept it. Supervision remains inactive while acceptance is pending.
- The teen initiated the invitation: The teen must confirm that the accepting parent is the person they intended to supervise the account.
- The setup prompts differ from older guides: Use the current Family Center link and the prompts visible there. Meta’s current materials do not verify a fixed sequence of in-app menu labels.
- More than one teen account needs supervision: Complete a separate setup for each account; one parent can supervise a given account.
