Compare laptops by the work you need them to do—not by processor names or battery claims alone. Start with your required apps and budget, then compare the exact configurations using relevant performance tests, graphics results, and battery reviews with clearly stated test conditions. Heat, fan noise, and performance away from the charger can matter just as much as peak scores.
Start with your workload and constraints
Write down the applications and games you must run, along with the heaviest task you expect to do regularly. Then set your budget and decide how much portability, screen quality, and operating-system compatibility matter. The right processor and graphics hardware depend on those priorities.

- For everyday productivity, web browsing, and video playback, a powerful discrete graphics card may be unnecessary.
- For demanding games, 3D rendering, CAD, simulation, or professional video editing, check the specific software or game requirements before choosing a laptop.
- Confirm that required applications support the laptop’s operating system and configuration. A benchmark advantage is irrelevant if the software you depend on will not run properly.
Manufacturer buying guides can help explain product categories and intended uses, but they are not independent comparisons. For example, Microsoft’s Surface buying guide describes certain Snapdragon X Series Elite or Plus Surface Copilot+ PC configurations as offering an NPU capability of 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS). That is an NPU figure for those configurations—not a CPU or GPU performance score, and not a general measure for comparing laptops. Microsoft’s Surface buying guide

Compare processors using relevant tests
Compare the processor in the exact laptop configuration you might buy, not just the processor family name. Laptop performance can vary with cooling, firmware, power settings, and the manufacturer’s implementation of the hardware.
#1 Best Overall

Look at more than one kind of work
- Single-core performance: Useful context for some responsive, lightly threaded tasks.
- Multi-core performance: Relevant to work that can use several processor cores, such as some rendering and conversion tasks.
- Application tests: Often the most useful evidence when reviewers test software similar to yours.
- Sustained performance: Shows whether the laptop can maintain speed during longer workloads rather than only producing a strong short-lived result.
Use independent reviews that identify the tested laptop configuration and explain the workload. A single synthetic score cannot establish a universal processor winner for every application. RTINGS recommends comparing available CPU and GPU benchmark scores alongside manufacturer specifications in its laptop buying guide.
Choose graphics for the apps and games you use
Integrated graphics are generally suited to everyday tasks, video playback, and light creative work. A discrete GPU may be a better fit for demanding gaming, 3D rendering, or professional video editing, but the specific application’s requirements should guide the decision.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Compare graphics results from games or applications resembling your intended workload. Check the GPU model in the exact laptop configuration, and account for the system requirements of the software you need. The sources available do not establish a universal graphics ranking that applies to every game or creative application.
Read battery-life figures as test results, not guarantees
Battery life depends on what the laptop is doing and how it is configured. Heavy editing, simulation, or gaming can drain the battery faster than lighter productivity work. Display resolution, brightness, and refresh rate also affect runtime.

When reading a review, check the battery-test workload, screen brightness, wireless use, power profile, and laptop configuration. Compare runtimes only when the conditions are similar: a web-browsing loop and a gaming test answer different questions. A manufacturer’s battery estimate is not directly comparable to an independent test unless the testing conditions are clear.
Check what happens when the laptop is unplugged
Some laptops change performance on battery power. If you regularly work away from an outlet, look for reviews that test the same machine on AC power and battery using comparable workloads.

In a July 29, 2026, comparison, Tom’s Hardware used Cinebench single-core and multi-core workloads and Handbrake video conversion to examine unplugged performance. The article compared each system with itself to measure changes on battery; it did not rank different systems against one another by their absolute scores. Read the Tom’s Hardware comparison.
Balance performance with heat, noise, and fit
A laptop that delivers higher performance may also run hotter, produce louder fan noise, or use more power. Review sustained performance, thermals, noise, and power-mode behavior together rather than treating peak speed as the whole experience.

Use these questions to make the final comparison:
- Does it run every required app and game on the operating system you want?
- Do independent tests cover your typical work as well as your heaviest regular task?
- Are graphics results relevant to your games or creative applications?
- Were battery results measured under conditions similar to how you will use the laptop?
- Will the display and portability suit your needs, and are heat or fan noise likely to bother you?
- Does the specific configuration fit your budget?
There is no universal processor, graphics, or laptop-platform winner across these factors. The best choice is the configuration whose tested performance, battery behavior, compatibility, and portability fit your actual work.
