Before you start
Native controls work best when both accounts are ready and the teen knows what will happen. Complete these checks before opening any settings:

- Update the apps. Install the current TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat mobile apps. Instagram specifically requires the latest mobile app for supervision.
- Sign in on both devices. Have the parent or guardian account and the teen’s account accessible. Keep the teen’s phone nearby because linking or invitation acceptance happens on the teen’s account.
- Use the accurate date of birth. Age determines which protections and features appear. Snapchat notes that its minimum use age can be higher than its standard requirement in some jurisdictions.
- Explain consent first. Instagram and Snapchat require the teen to accept an invitation. TikTok Family Pairing links a parent account with a teen account through an in-app process.
- Decide what you are trying to solve. Examples include late-night scrolling, unsuitable recommendations, unknown contacts, or use of an AI feature. A specific goal makes it easier to choose a proportionate setting.
- Keep a second layer in mind. These controls operate inside the social apps. Device-level downtime, app-install restrictions, web filters, and the operating system’s child account settings are separate tools.

Set up TikTok Family Pairing
TikTok’s main parent feature is Family Pairing. It connects a guardian’s TikTok account to a teen’s account so the guardian can manage selected settings without taking over the teen’s login.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Link the two accounts
- Open TikTok on both the parent’s and teen’s phones and confirm that each person is signed in to the intended account.
- On each account, open TikTok’s settings and look for Family Pairing. The exact location and wording can change, so use the settings search if it is offered.
- Choose the parent or teen role as appropriate on each phone.
- Follow the in-app linking prompts until TikTok confirms that the accounts are paired. The teen needs to take part in this process; it is not a hidden monitoring connection.
TikTok’s current screens can differ by country, app version, and account age. If Family Pairing is missing, first update the app and verify that you are using the correct account before assuming the feature is unavailable.

Choose screen-time limits
Family Pairing includes screen-time controls that can be customized for individual days. Set a shorter limit on school nights and a different limit for weekends if that matches your household schedule. Discuss what should happen when the limit is reached; a technical cutoff works better when it is part of an agreed routine.
TikTok says teen accounts under 18 start with a 60-minute daily screen-time limit by default. That is a platform default, not a guarantee that every account in every region currently behaves identically, so check the value shown in the paired account before relying on it.
Filter words in the For You feed
Use Family Pairing’s keyword controls to add words or phrases that should be filtered from the For You feed. Keyword filtering reduces recommendations containing those terms; it cannot identify every upsetting topic, coded spelling, image, or video. Review the list periodically with the teen rather than treating it as a complete content filter.

Adjust comment controls
Family Pairing also provides comment controls. Choose the setting that fits the teen’s age and comfort level, then revisit it if the account receives harassment or if the teen’s circumstances change. Comment settings affect interaction around posts; they do not remove every risk elsewhere in the app.
Turn on Restricted Mode when you need a broader filter
Restricted Mode is a separate TikTok setting. On the account where you want it enabled, use this path:

- Open Profile.
- Tap the Menu button.
- Choose Settings and privacy.
- Open Content preferences.
- Select Restricted Mode.
- Follow TikTok’s passcode prompts and save the passcode securely.
A parent can also manage Restricted Mode through Family Pairing. TikTok describes it as limiting exposure to content that may not be comfortable for everyone, not as a perfect filter. Keep discussing content and reporting problems even after it is enabled.
Know the age-based defaults
TikTok’s Guardian’s Guide describes several age-related protections: accounts for users under 18 begin private, accounts for users under 16 do not have direct messaging or group chat where those features are available, and only accounts aged 18 or older can go LIVE. These are platform rules and defaults that can be affected by local requirements or policy changes. Check the current settings on the teen’s account instead of assuming a rule from another country or an older app version.
Set up Instagram supervision
Instagram supervision is invitation-based. It is available for teens aged 13–17 and a supervising parent must be over 18. The teen or the parent can start the invitation, but supervision does not begin until the invitation is accepted.
Send and accept the invitation
- Update Instagram on both phones and sign in to the accounts that will be connected.
- Open Instagram’s supervision controls and start an invitation from either the teen’s account or the parent’s account.
- Send the invitation to the other person using the option Instagram presents.
- On the receiving account, open the invitation and accept it. Until acceptance is complete, supervision is not active.
- Return to the supervision area and review every control that Instagram displays for that teen account.
Only one parent can supervise a given teen account according to Instagram’s help guidance. If another adult needs visibility, agree on how the supervising parent will share relevant information rather than creating competing supervision links.
Set up each teen account separately
A teen who uses more than one Instagram account needs supervision configured for each account. Accepting an invitation on one account does not automatically cover a second profile, even when both profiles use the same phone or email address. Make a list of the teen’s active accounts and confirm each one shows as supervised.

Understand the Family Center rollout
In a May 2026 announcement, Meta described a global rollout of consolidated supervision tools through Family Center, with a single invitation intended to connect supervision across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger. This was a rollout announcement, so screens and availability may differ while accounts receive the changes. If your Instagram app still shows an older invitation flow, use the controls actually displayed rather than looking for a menu that has not reached your account.
Instagram’s supervision tools sit alongside Teen Account protections. They are not a promise that a parent can read every conversation or see every action. Review the permissions and notices shown during setup so the teen understands what the parent can and cannot see.
Set up Snapchat Family Center
Snapchat Family Center is designed for parents and caregivers aged 18 or older supervising teens aged 13–17. The teen must be your Snapchat friend before you can send the Family Center invitation. Family Center may not be available in every location, and Snapchat says the minimum age for using the service can be higher in some jurisdictions.
Find Family Center
Snapchat can expose Family Center through several entry points because the menu can vary by app version:
- Open your profile and look in the My Friends section.
- Use Snapchat’s in-app search with terms such as family, safety, or parent.
- Open Settings, then check App & Privacy for the Family Center option.
Invite the teen
- Add the teen as a Snapchat friend and wait until the friendship is active.
- Open Family Center and select the teen’s name.
- Send the Family Center invitation.
- Ask the teen to open the Chat invitation, view it, and accept it. The link is not active until the teen completes that step.
If the teen does not appear, check that the friendship is mutual, both accounts meet the age requirements, and the apps are current. A missing Family Center menu can also reflect regional availability rather than a problem with your phone.

Review what Family Center shows
After the invitation is accepted, Family Center can show people the teen has recently contacted and the teen’s friends and group members. This is contact awareness, not a transcript of conversations. Snapchat explicitly keeps message contents private from parents through Family Center.
You can also review sensitive-content controls and restrictions for My AI. Discuss what the restrictions mean before enabling them, especially if the teen uses My AI for schoolwork or accessibility. Location visibility is separate: it requires location sharing and participation, so linking Family Center alone does not reveal a live location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the controls without creating false assurance
The three services do not offer equivalent supervision. TikTok gives parents several directly configurable settings, including daily screen-time schedules, feed keyword filters, comment controls, and Restricted Mode. Instagram’s model centers on an accepted supervision invitation and protections attached to a Teen Account. Snapchat emphasizes awareness of contacts and selected content or AI restrictions while preserving private message contents.
None of these tools replaces a conversation about scams, sexual exploitation, bullying, self-harm content, impersonation, or pressure to move a conversation off-platform. Ask the teen how they would report an account, block someone, and tell a trusted adult. Agree on when a parent will intervene and what information will be shared.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The invitation is pending
Confirm that the recipient is signed in to the intended account, has opened the correct notification or Chat invitation, and has explicitly accepted it. Instagram and Snapchat remain inactive until acceptance. For TikTok, return to Family Pairing on both accounts and restart the in-app linking prompts if the pairing confirmation never appears.
Best Value
A control or menu is missing
Update the app, sign out and back in if necessary, and check the account’s recorded age. Feature availability can depend on country, account type, age, and staged rollouts. Do not substitute a third-party monitoring app for a missing native feature without understanding its privacy and security implications.
The teen has more than one account
Instagram requires a separate supervision setup for each teen account. TikTok Family Pairing and Snapchat Family Center should also be checked account by account so that the linked profile is the one the teen actually uses.
The setting does not behave as expected
Read the description beside the control and test it together with the teen. Restricted Mode and keyword filters are not perfect content classifiers, and a screen-time limit does not address use on another device. If the problem concerns device-wide use, configure the phone or tablet’s own family and downtime settings as a separate step.

After setup, schedule a short monthly review and an extra check after a major app update. Look for:
- whether the parent account is still linked or the invitation still shows as accepted;
- changes to the teen’s daily schedule, school timetable, or sleep routine;
- new words that should be added to TikTok’s For You feed filter;
- unwanted comments, sensitive recommendations, or unfamiliar contacts;
- new Instagram accounts that still need their own invitation;
- Snapchat friends, group members, recent contacts, My AI settings, and any location-sharing decision;
- the teen’s understanding of what is visible to the parent and what remains private.
Keep the review collaborative. TikTok’s Guardian’s Guide quotes ConnectSafely’s Larry Magid describing the goal as parental involvement and an opportunity for parents and teens to learn from each other, rather than relying on controls alone.
Quick Recap
Final setup checklist
- Update all three apps and verify both accounts are accessible.
- Confirm the teen’s real age and any local minimum-age requirement.
- Explain the linking or invitation step before starting.
- Pair TikTok accounts, set daily limits, review keyword and comment controls, and decide whether Restricted Mode is appropriate.
- Send and accept Instagram supervision invitations for every teen account in use.
- Add the teen as a Snapchat friend, send the Family Center invitation, and have the teen accept it in Chat.
- Review Snapchat’s contact visibility, sensitive-content settings, My AI restrictions, and optional location sharing.
- Write down the household agreement for screen time, reporting, privacy, and when an adult will step in.
- Recheck the controls after significant app updates or changes in the teen’s routine.
