An IET Honorary Fellowship is a distinct honorary membership category for people whose engineering work, service to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), or association with the institution merits special recognition. The IET’s membership terms state that Honorary Fellows are elected by the IET Board of Trustees.
A nominee does not have to be an IET member. The published proposal route asks for brief biographical information and a short statement explaining the grounds for the nomination. The IET’s current membership guidance directs proposals to [email protected]; check that page before sending because contact instructions can change.

What an IET Honorary Fellowship recognizes
Honorary Fellowship, formally identified in the IET’s terms as Honorary Fellow (HonFIET), is an honorary category rather than the normal route into Fellow membership. It is used when the IET wants to acknowledge an individual’s exceptional connection with its engineering mission or with the institution itself.
The category has three published grounds. A person may be considered because of distinguished work in an engineering discipline that falls within the IET’s objects and purposes; because the person has rendered distinguished service to the IET; or because the person’s association would benefit the institution. These grounds are deliberately broad, so a candidate need not fit a single profession, job title or career pattern. The relevant test is the significance of the person’s contribution in relation to the IET.

The IET’s Honorary Fellows awards brochure describes the nomination material as a concise proposal, not a full membership application. Its wording calls for “brief biographical information and a short statement of the grounds on which the nomination is made.”
Engineering distinction
This ground is aimed at a person whose work in engineering is distinguished and relevant to the IET’s stated objects and purposes. The published material does not limit the recognition to one engineering discipline, employer type or country. A proposal should therefore explain both the achievement and its relevance to the IET’s engineering remit, rather than simply listing senior job titles or awards.
Service to the IET
Honorary Fellowship can also recognize distinguished service performed for the IET. This is an institution-focused ground: the proposal should show what the person contributed to the IET, its activities or its mission and why that service warrants an honorary distinction.

An association that benefits the institution
The terms also allow recognition where an individual’s association is of benefit to the IET. That wording is broader than employment by the IET or formal membership. A nominator should make the benefit clear and specific, while avoiding claims that the association automatically qualifies someone.

Who can be nominated?
The IET’s Honorary Fellowship guidance says nominees may be IET members or non-members. Membership status is therefore not a prerequisite for the candidate. The current IET India membership page presents the practical route as an IET member suggesting an individual; it does not say that a non-member may submit a proposal directly.
Because the published grounds are about distinction, service or institutional benefit, a proposal should focus on the candidate’s record rather than on whether the person already holds another IET grade. Do not describe Honorary Fellowship as an upgrade from ordinary membership: it is a separate honorary category.
How the award is made
The governing authority is the IET Board of Trustees. The terms use the specific formulation: “Honorary Fellows are elected by the IET Board of Trustees.” In practical terms, a proposal starts the consideration process, but the proposal itself is not an award and does not guarantee election.
The public information explains the eligibility grounds and the Board’s role, but it does not publish a fixed scoring rubric, a guaranteed number of places, a public decision timetable or a universal submission deadline. It also does not promise that every proposal will be accepted. A nominator should treat the published instructions as the minimum route, not as a prediction of the outcome.

How to put forward a proposal
Use the following sequence when preparing a nomination. It follows the information the IET publishes while keeping the submission concise.
- Check the category. Decide which of the three grounds best explains the nomination: distinguished engineering work within the IET’s objects and purposes, distinguished service to the IET, or an association that benefits the institution. If none fits, ordinary membership categories or another recognition route may be more appropriate.
- Confirm the candidate’s identity and status. Record the person’s full name, current role or principal field and whether they are an IET member. The last point is for clarity; the candidate can be a member or a non-member.
- Write the brief biography. Summarize the career or service record needed to understand the nomination. Include the positions, projects, leadership, discoveries, public service or other achievements that are directly relevant to the chosen ground. The published requirement is brief biographical information, so avoid sending an unstructured curriculum vitae as a substitute for an explanation.
- Write the short statement of grounds. In a separate section, connect the evidence to the IET’s wording. State what the candidate did, why it is distinguished or beneficial, and how it relates to engineering or to the IET. Concrete outcomes are more useful than general praise.
- Send the proposal through the published route. The current IET membership guidance gives [email protected] for Honorary Fellowship proposals. Include the biography and grounds statement in a clearly labelled email or attachment, and retain a copy of what was sent.
- Verify the contact instruction before submission. The email address appears on the current membership page. An older awards brochure also refers to the Governance Department and the same address, but the live page should take priority if instructions change.
What a strong proposal should contain
The IET does not publish a detailed application form or a public scoring matrix for this category. The two stated components are the safest minimum: a brief biography and a short statement of grounds. You can make those components easier for the Board to assess by using a clear structure.
- Candidate identification: full name, principal professional field and current or most significant role.
- Relevant record: the engineering work, IET service or institutional association that supports the nomination.
- Evidence of distinction or benefit: specific responsibilities, results, influence, lasting contribution or service outcomes, where these can be stated accurately.
- Connection to the IET: an explicit explanation of how the record falls within the IET’s objects and purposes or benefits the institution.
- Concise grounds statement: a short, readable argument rather than a collection of endorsements with no explanation.
These are presentation recommendations, not additional published eligibility tests. The official material does not require a particular number of references, a minimum career length, a fee, a public citation, or a fixed template. Do not invent such requirements or imply that supplying them guarantees election.

Readers often confuse HonFIET with the standard Fellow grade. The IET treats them as different categories with different entry routes and purposes.

The ordinary Fellow route is explained on the IET’s Fellow membership page and in its Joining the IET FAQs. A person who wants to apply for ordinary Fellowship should follow those criteria instead of submitting an Honorary Fellowship proposal.
Using the post-nominal correctly
The formal category name appears as Honorary Fellow (HonFIET) in the membership terms, while the IET’s designatory-letter guidance gives the letters with a space as Hon FIET. When writing the post-nominal in correspondence, biographies or a programme, follow the spelling and spacing in the IET’s Using your designatory letters guidance. Do not replace it with FIET alone, because that denotes ordinary Fellowship.

Submitting an ordinary Fellowship application as an honorary proposal
An HonFIET proposal should explain an honorary ground and request consideration through the governance route. It is not a way to bypass the evidence and application requirements for ordinary FIET.

The published Honorary Fellowship guidance expressly allows nominees who are not IET members. Do not reject a candidate solely for that reason.

Sending praise without grounds
Statements such as “an outstanding engineer” do not show which published ground applies. Link each major achievement or service contribution to the IET’s objects, purposes or institutional benefit.
Turning a concise proposal into an unsupported submission
The official instruction calls for brief biography and a short grounds statement. Extra material should clarify the case, not bury it under unverified claims, unrelated media coverage or a complete employment history.
Promising an outcome or inventing a deadline
The public pages do not state a guaranteed timetable, annual quota, fixed deadline or acceptance rate. Describe the proposal as a request for Board consideration, not as a nomination that will necessarily succeed.

Start with the current membership page and verify the governance email before sending. The brochure is useful for the wording of the proposal requirement, but a live IET page is the better source for current contact instructions.
Nomination checklist
- The candidate’s work or association clearly matches one published Honorary Fellowship ground.
- The biography is brief and includes only information needed to understand the distinction.
- The grounds statement explains relevance to the IET rather than relying on status or reputation alone.
- The proposal makes clear that the nominee may be a member or non-member.
- The email is addressed through the current governance contact shown by the IET.
- The wording does not promise election, a decision date or a particular result.
- If the person is being considered for ordinary FIET, the ordinary Fellow application route is used instead.
Bottom line
HonFIET is the IET’s honorary recognition for distinguished engineering work, distinguished service to the IET or an association that benefits the institution. A concise proposal containing a brief biography and short grounds statement can be submitted through the published governance contact, and the IET Board of Trustees decides whether to elect the nominee. It is separate from ordinary FIET, which follows its own application and sustained-achievement criteria.
