Instagram and Meta describe these as independent privacy settings, so changing one does not change the other.
What each Instagram privacy setting hides
Instagram uses different signals for presence and message reading. Knowing which one you want to suppress prevents changing the wrong setting.

Instagram says people you follow and people you message may see whether you are active or when you were last active when Activity Status is enabled. Read receipts answer a different question: whether a particular message has been read. Meta described the feature in its March 4, 2024 Instagram direct-message announcement as a way that “conveniently let[s] others know you’ve read their message.”

Start with the situation that prompted you to change privacy settings. If you do not want contacts to know that you are currently using Instagram, or when you last used it, the relevant control is Show activity status. If you want to open a Direct message without sending the usual read confirmation, the relevant control is Show read receipts.

These settings can be used together. Someone could be unable to see your activity status but still receive a read receipt when you open a message, or they could receive no read receipt while still seeing that you are online. Turning off one does not silently turn off the other.
There is no separate product, subscription, browser extension, or physical device required for either change. The controls are part of Instagram account settings. The main requirements are access to the Instagram account you want to change and an app or web interface that exposes the relevant setting.
How to hide your Instagram activity status
In the Instagram app
The current documented route is:
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the menu, then select Settings.
- Select Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show activity status.
- Turn the control off.
Once disabled, the activity indicator and recent-activity information covered by this setting are no longer shared with the eligible accounts described by Instagram. The label or location can move when Instagram redesigns its settings, but “Messages and story replies” and “Show activity status” are the labels in Instagram’s current Help Center instructions.

Instagram’s Help Center also documents a computer route. Open Instagram on the web, use the More menu, choose Settings, then open Messages and story replies and Show activity status. Switch the setting off. If the web interface presents a slightly different arrangement, use the settings search or look under the messaging and story-reply privacy section rather than changing message controls in an individual conversation.
What activity status includes
Activity Status is more than a green online marker. Instagram describes it as information about whether an account is active, was active recently, or is active in the same chat. People you follow and people you message may see that information when your Activity Status is enabled. The setting therefore addresses both “Are you online now?” and “When were you last active?” questions.
What changes after you turn it off
Activity Status is reciprocal. Instagram states that disabling it also removes your ability to see whether accounts that follow you or accounts with which you have Direct conversations are active, were active recently, or are currently active in the same chat. In practical terms, you give up the presence information for other accounts while withholding your own.
This setting concerns presence, not message content. It does not by itself turn off read receipts, prevent someone from sending you a message, or erase a “Seen” indicator that was already generated before you changed the setting. If the concern is a message being marked as read, change the read-receipt control as well.

How to turn off Instagram read receipts
Disable read receipts for all chats
Meta’s documented global route is:
- Open Instagram’s account settings.
- Select Messages and story replies.
- Select Show read receipts.
- Switch the control off.
This is the all-chat control described in Meta’s March 4, 2024 announcement. It changes the read-receipt behavior for conversations covered by the account-wide setting. The announcement establishes the setting and its location, but it does not provide a complete device-by-device or region-by-region availability matrix. If you do not see the control, update Instagram, reopen the settings page, and check again later; do not assume that the absence of the option means Activity Status has been disabled.
Control read receipts for a specific chat
Meta also says Instagram supports read-receipt controls for specific chats. To look for that option, open the relevant Direct conversation and inspect its conversation information or message-privacy controls. The exact taps are not fixed in Meta’s announcement and may vary by app version, account, or rollout, so the precise path should not be treated as universal.
A chat-specific control is useful when you want to keep read receipts in most conversations but suppress them for one conversation. If you need the broadest predictable change and the global option is available on your account, use the account-level Show read receipts switch instead. If you cannot find a chat-level switch, that does not prove that the feature is unavailable everywhere; it may simply not be exposed in that account’s current interface.
What a read receipt means
A read receipt is a message-read signal. It tells the sender that a message has been read, rather than that you are online or recently active. It is tied to the conversation and the act of reading the message, which is why Meta places the control with messaging and story-reply settings.
What read receipts do—and do not—cover
Read receipts are not an online-presence switch. Turning them off does not hide whether you are currently online or when you were last active; that requires the separate Activity Status control. Conversely, hiding Activity Status does not remove the read confirmation for a message you open. If you want both signals suppressed, change both switches.
Activity Status versus read receipts: choose the right control
Use this decision guide before changing anything:
- You do not want people to know when you are online: turn off Show activity status.
- You want to read messages without sending the usual read signal: turn off Show read receipts, globally or for the relevant chat if that control is available.
- You want both kinds of privacy: turn off both settings; they are independent.
- You want to keep seeing other people’s activity status: you cannot do that while your own Activity Status is disabled, because Instagram makes that exchange reciprocal.
- You want read receipts in most chats but not one: use a specific-chat read-receipt control if your account shows it.
These controls do not compete with one another and are not alternative versions of one feature. Activity Status is about presence over time; read receipts are about a message being read.
Common examples
If you are browsing Instagram but do not want a contact to know you are available, turn off Activity Status. If you are comfortable being shown as online but want time to answer a message without sending “Seen,” turn off read receipts. If you are managing a personal and a work account, make the change separately on each account whose messages or presence you want to protect.

Why the settings may look different on your account
App and web layouts are not identical
Instagram documents both app and computer variants for Activity Status, but menus can be rearranged as the service changes. The account-level read-receipt announcement gives the settings route without promising identical labels or placement on every platform. Android, iPhone, and the web may therefore expose the same control in different visual locations.
Feature rollouts can vary
Meta’s announcement confirms global and chat-specific read-receipt controls, but it does not establish a current availability table for every country, account type, or device. A missing option may reflect a staged rollout, an outdated app, or a temporary interface difference. It is not evidence that the feature has been permanently removed.
Settings are account-specific
If you manage more than one Instagram account, check the setting while signed in to the account whose privacy you want to change. A switch changed on one account should not be treated as proof that another account has the same value. Likewise, verify the value in the interface you actually use for messaging; an app and web view can present the same account setting differently.
Do not confuse nearby controls
The Messages and story replies area contains several messaging-related choices. Read the label before changing a switch. Show activity status controls presence. Show read receipts controls the message-read signal. Changing notifications, story-reply permissions, or general account privacy options will not accomplish either of these specific goals.
Troubleshooting when a privacy switch is missing or ineffective
The “Show activity status” option is missing
- Confirm that you opened Messages and story replies, not a general notifications or security page.
- Use the current Instagram app or the web More → Settings route documented by Instagram.
- Close and reopen Instagram after updating it, then check the same section again.
- If the app and web interfaces disagree, treat the account’s visible switch as authoritative for that interface and allow for menu differences.
You turned off Activity Status but still see presence information
Check that the switch is actually off on the account you are using and that you are not looking at a different account. The setting governs Instagram’s activity-status signal; it does not remove every possible indication that someone is using the service, such as a reply they send while you are watching a conversation. A person can infer activity from a new message even when the formal status indicator is hidden.
The “Show read receipts” option is missing
- Open Settings → Messages and story replies and look specifically for Show read receipts.
- Update the app and revisit the account-level settings.
- Check whether the option appears only in a particular conversation’s privacy or information controls.
- Remember that Meta has not published a complete device- and region-specific availability guide for this feature.
A sender still appears to know you read a message
First verify whether the message was opened before the read-receipt setting was changed. Then confirm that you changed Show read receipts, not Show activity status. If you changed only one conversation, check whether the message was sent in another chat or under a different account. Instagram’s controls are separate, so a presence change cannot substitute for a read-receipt change.
You can no longer see other people’s activity
That is the expected reciprocal effect of disabling Activity Status. Instagram says you lose visibility into the activity state of accounts that follow you or with which you have Direct conversations. Re-enable Show activity status if seeing those indicators is more important than hiding your own.

The switch appears to change back
Reopen the same settings page and verify the value while signed in to the intended account. If the app and web views do not match, check both after updating or restarting the app. Avoid assuming that a visual redesign has changed the privacy behavior; use the exact setting label and allow for account-specific rollout differences.

Activity Status is an exchange
Turning it off provides a quieter presence profile, but it also removes the activity information you may use to decide whether someone is available. There is no documented one-way mode that hides your status while preserving your ability to see everyone else’s status.
Read receipts can be broader or narrower
The global read-receipt switch is simpler because it applies across chats covered by the account setting. A specific-chat control, when available, lets you keep the normal behavior elsewhere. Because Meta has not specified one universal per-chat navigation sequence, inspect the relevant conversation’s privacy controls instead of relying on a fixed tap order copied from another app version.
Neither setting is an invisibility mode
These controls address two defined signals only. Hiding Activity Status does not hide messages you send, and hiding read receipts does not make your account absent from Instagram. Treat them as targeted controls for presence and message-read information, not as a complete anonymous-browsing feature.
Review the trade-off before helping someone else
If you are changing settings for a family member, colleague, or managed account, explain the reciprocal Activity Status effect first. Someone who wants privacy may still expect to see when contacts are online; Instagram’s documented behavior means those goals cannot both be maintained through this switch. For read receipts, ask whether the preference should apply to every chat or only a particular conversation before choosing the global control.
A quick setup checklist
- Decide whether you want to hide online presence, read confirmations, or both.
- For presence, open Settings → Messages and story replies → Show activity status and switch it off.
- For all-chat read receipts, open account settings → Messages and story replies → Show read receipts and switch it off.
- For a single conversation, open that chat and look for its message or privacy controls; use the chat-specific read-receipt option if your account provides it.
- Recheck the settings on each Instagram account you use and on the interface—app or web—where you normally send messages.
- Remember the consequences: Activity Status off also hides other accounts’ activity status from you, while read-receipt controls concern whether a message is marked as read.
What Instagram and Meta officially establish
Instagram’s Help Center documents the Activity Status path and its reciprocal visibility rule. Meta’s official “Edit Your Messages, Pin Your Chats and More Instagram DM Updates,” published March 4, 2024, documents the meaning of read receipts, the account-level control under Messages and story replies, and the existence of controls for individual chats. Meta’s announcement does not establish one current per-chat navigation path for every device or region, so any article that presents one exact sequence as universal is overstating what the announcement supports.

The practical result is straightforward: use the Activity Status switch when the concern is being seen online, use the read-receipts switch when the concern is a message being marked read, and change both when you want both signals suppressed.
