To set up parental controls on Xbox, give your child a separate Microsoft account, add it to your Microsoft family group, then manage content, screen time, online interactions and purchases through the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft family account website. The controls work independently, so you can set only the limits your family needs.
Before you start: use a child account
Xbox recommends that a child use their own child Microsoft account rather than an adult’s account. Add the child account to your Microsoft family group; Xbox describes the family group as a free service that provides access to family features. A parent in the family group is required to change a child account’s Xbox privacy and online settings.

For Xbox-specific controls, use the Xbox Family Settings app or the family account website. Microsoft also documents screen-time and individual app or game limits through the Microsoft Family Safety app and family website. The labels and placement can vary by app version, device and locale, so use the current Xbox or Microsoft family interface rather than relying on an older console-menu walkthrough.

Set up the main Xbox controls
1. Choose content limits
In the child’s family settings, set age-appropriate content restrictions. Xbox provides content filters for mature content, and you can review individual game approvals or blocks where those options are available. Rating-based restrictions help filter content by maturity level; check the individual title if you need a more specific decision. ESRB’s Xbox guide explains rating controls, but its menu directions may reflect an older console interface: ESRB’s Xbox parental controls guide.

2. Schedule Xbox screen time
Set the Xbox device’s allowed hours and daily time allowance through Family Safety. You can set different schedules for different days. Microsoft says these schedules apply to devices connected to the family group. Make sure the child signs out when finished: time can count while the child is signed in, even if the console is idle. See Microsoft’s screen-time instructions.
3. Limit a specific game or app
If a device-wide schedule is too broad, Family Safety also lets you set a daily allowance and permitted time windows for a selected app or game. These limits can differ by day. Follow Microsoft’s app and game limit instructions.

4. Review communication and multiplayer permissions
Use the child’s privacy and online settings to decide who can communicate with them, who can send friend requests, and whether they can use multiplayer and other social features. Xbox family tools also let parents review a child’s friend list and communications settings. Set these permissions to suit the child and revisit them as their needs change. Turn on purchase approval, also described as “Ask a Parent,” to review a child’s purchases. You can also add funds to the child’s account if you prefer a controlled balance. Xbox describes these options in its family controls overview and December 17, 2025 family settings guide.

Check that limits behave as expected
- Screen time seems to run out early: Check whether the child’s account stayed signed in while idle or while someone else used the console. Signed-in time can count toward the limit.
- The activity report shows less use than the limit enforced: Microsoft notes that idle signed-in time can count toward a limit without appearing the same way in usage reports. Enforcement and reporting therefore may not match exactly.
- A game is blocked while another family member is signed in: Microsoft says that when multiple users are signed in, the youngest child’s age restrictions may govern games. A parent can bypass the restriction or sign out the younger account.
- A schedule does not affect a device: Confirm that the device is connected to the family group; Microsoft’s screen-time schedules apply to connected devices.
Microsoft covers these reporting and sign-in issues in its Family Safety troubleshooting guide. After setup, review activity reports and adjust the limits when the child’s routine or needs change.
