Before paying for a used PS5 Pro, verify the console’s identity and condition, test its display, ports, controller, game playback and PlayStation services, and confirm exactly which accessories are included. Do the functional checks before the seller deactivates and resets the console; a successful test today cannot guarantee there will be no later service or account issue.
Before the meetup: ask for a demonstration
Sony’s US PlayStation buying guide recommends asking the seller for a video showing the ports, buttons, any disc drive, power-on and internet connection. Treat that as an initial screen, not a substitute for testing the actual console in person.

Bring or arrange a display, HDMI cable, internet access and a suitable USB device or cable if you plan to check the ports. Agree in advance that you will be able to power on the console and run a game. If you cannot perform a particular check at the meetup, factor that uncertainty into your decision rather than assuming the feature works.

Inspect the console and verify its basic functions
Check the exterior, serial number and seals
Look over the console for impact damage and other visible problems. Confirm that the serial number is present and readable, and inspect for signs of tampering such as a broken warranty seal. Sony specifically flags physical damage, seals and removed serial numbers in its buying guidance.
Test the picture, HDMI and USB ports
Connect the PS5 Pro to a display and confirm it produces a stable picture. Test the available USB ports with a suitable cable or device. Sony advises checking all ports; a particular accessory may not be compatible, so an unsuccessful connection does not by itself prove a port is faulty.
The PS5 Pro safety guide lists two USB Type-A ports, two USB-C ports—one higher-speed—plus HDMI OUT, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These are specifications, not a diagnostic guarantee: check the ports and connections you expect to use on the specific unit. The guide also gives an operating temperature range of 5 °C to 35 °C; that is a product specification, not a threshold that can diagnose a used console’s condition. Connect to the internet and check PlayStation services
Get the console online and confirm it can access PlayStation services. Sony warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services. A successful connection during the meetup is useful evidence, but it cannot guarantee the console will never face a later service or account problem.

Run a game and watch how the console behaves
Launch a game and check image and sound. Watch for unexpected shutdowns or abnormal heat while it runs. Sony recommends checking image quality and overheating, but does not specify a required test duration; agree on a reasonable opportunity to observe operation rather than treating a brief power-on as a full test.
Try the controller
Check the DualSense controller’s sticks, buttons and triggers, confirm it connects wirelessly, and test charging. Sony lists a DualSense controller in the PS5 Pro contents and names it in the safety guide, but those sources do not prescribe a stick-drift test procedure. Move each stick through its range and check that inputs behave as expected in a game or menu.
Confirm what the seller is actually including
The PS5 Pro is an all-digital console with no built-in disc drive. Sony sells a compatible disc drive separately, and an internet connection is required to pair it with the PS5 Pro during setup. If the listing or seller includes a drive, verify that actual drive and confirm its price is part of the agreed bundle. Without one, you cannot test physical game discs.

A used seller may offer a different bundle. The vertical stand and disc drive are sold separately, so ask explicitly whether either is included rather than assuming it comes with the console.

Keep the functional check separate from the handover. First test the console and PlayStation services. If you both agree to proceed, have the seller deactivate their access and reset the console before you leave. Sony’s buying guide recommends ensuring the seller has deactivated the console and no longer has access.

A PS5 reset deletes user and game data and cannot be undone. “Restore Default Settings” is different: it restores certain settings but does not erase user or game data. Follow Sony’s instructions for restoring default settings on a PlayStation console, and make sure the seller understands which operation is being performed.
Check proof of purchase, warranty and buyer protection
Sony says third-party used PlayStation products may not be under warranty, while noting certified refurbished products as an exception in its buying guide. Ask for the original proof of purchase and check any claimed remaining coverage directly with Sony in your region. Do not rely on a seller’s assurance that a warranty transfers: warranty terms and consumer rights vary by geography, and Sony’s product details cited here are US-specific.
Before paying, understand the return terms and any buyer protection available where you live. Compare offers using the demonstrated working condition, physical condition and serial number, PlayStation services access, clean handover, controller condition, included accessories, proof of purchase and protections. Sony’s sources do not establish current local market value, so check current local listings separately when judging the price.
When to walk away
Do not proceed if the seller refuses reasonable checks of the console’s identity, basic operation or advertised accessories, or if the condition or handover does not match what was agreed. Sony’s advice is direct: “Walk away if something feels wrong.”
