How to Set Up Parental Controls for Mature Open-World Games Like GTA 6

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Grand Theft Auto VI is an ESRB M (Mature 17+) game. Before a child can use it, create a separate child account, set an age filter that does not allow M-rated games, require approval for purchases, add a play-time schedule, and restrict voice, text, invitations and user-created content. These controls work at the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S level; they do not remove mature scenes from the game itself.

GTA VI is listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with the Xbox store listing a November 19, 2026 release date. Rockstar says the physical package contains a digital download code rather than a disc, so the purchasing account’s region and age rules matter before you buy.

What parents should know before allowing access

The US rating and content descriptors

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) lists Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+ in the United States. Its descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. The listing also says the game includes in-game purchases. An M rating is a warning about the content a player may encounter, not a setting that a console can edit out.

The ESRB rating is specific to the United States. If your family is elsewhere, check the rating authority used in your country and set the console’s age ceiling to the child’s actual age or the equivalent local category. The same practical controls—age filtering, purchase approval, time limits and communication restrictions—still apply.

Grand Theft Auto VI - PlayStation 5 (Code in Box, Delivers 11/12/26, Playable 11/19/26)
  • This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
  • Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
  • Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.

Platforms, release timing and connected features

ESRB lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles for GTA VI. The Xbox store listing gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and identifies the experience as single-player. That listing also warns that some features may require an internet connection, Rockstar account registration with a minimum age that can vary, additional fees or later unlocking. Treat those requirements as changeable: review the store page and the child’s account settings after major updates.

The physical package is a code

Rockstar’s support information says the physical version contains a download code and no disc. The code is tied to the region associated with the platform account used for redemption. A child who receives a code may therefore still need an adult to redeem it on the correct regional account, and a code bought for one region may not work on an account registered in another.

Build the family setup before buying the game

1. Give every child a separate account

ESRB’s parent guidance calls setting up child accounts for each child the most important first step. Use the child’s correct birthdate, not an adult date chosen to bypass a restriction. Protect the adult account with a password or PIN that the child does not know. Separate accounts prevent a younger child from inheriting permissions that were granted to an older sibling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use one child profile per child, even when they share a console.
  • Keep the adult account for approvals and administration; do not use it for the child’s routine play.
  • Record the recovery email, password and parent PIN somewhere secure so you can change settings later.
  • Check which account is signed in before redeeming a code or buying downloadable content.

2. Set the age ceiling below M

Choose the child’s real age or the console’s equivalent rating level. A setting below the M/17+ threshold prevents the child profile from launching GTA VI when the console enforces the restriction. Do not test the setup with an adult profile: platform restrictions are applied to the child profile, so an adult account can make a blocked game appear to work.

3. Separate game access from spending access

Age filtering and payment controls are different. A child may be blocked from launching an M-rated title yet still be able to spend money through a permissive account, or may be allowed to play an age-appropriate title while purchases remain unrestricted. Configure both controls, then inspect stored cards, wallet balances and gift cards. Xbox notes that gift-card funds can still be spent even when adult approval is enabled.

4. Decide how online contact will work

Start with Friends or Block for voice chat, text, party invitations and game invitations. Use the strictest option that fits your child, then loosen one category at a time if needed. On PlayStation, also review controls for viewing or sharing screenshots, broadcasts, comments and other player-created content.

PlayStation 5: exact family-management path

Use an adult account to administer the child profile. Sony’s documented path is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Parental Controls/Family Management.
  3. Open Family Management and add the child, or select an existing child.
  4. Configure the child’s game age level, play-time settings, spending limit, communication permissions and player-created-content permissions.

Block GTA VI by age level

In the Americas, Sony maps the ESRB M category to parental-control level 9. A tighter child setting blocks an M-rated game. Select the child in Family Management, open the game age-level control and choose a level appropriate for the child. Because the setting governs the profile rather than a single installation, it also applies to other games in the same rating range.

Set play time and automatic logout

Open the child’s play-time controls, choose the time zone and allowed days, then set a daily duration and downtime window. PlayStation can notify the child as the limit approaches and automatically log the child out when the limit ends. Make sure the schedule reflects school nights, weekends and holidays rather than relying on a single permanent limit.

Limit communication and shared content

Within the same child profile, restrict communication with other players. You can narrow voice, text, party and invitation access to Friends or block it. PlayStation also exposes separate controls for seeing or sharing screenshots, broadcasts, comments and other player-created material. Review those settings even if the game itself is being used in a single-player mode, because connected features and platform sharing are controlled outside the game.

Set the monthly spending limit

Set a monthly spending limit for the child profile and keep payment cards on the adult account. A zero limit is the clearest way to require an adult to fund purchases manually; a small limit can work when you want the child to have a defined allowance. Check the limit after adding a new child or changing the family manager, because the limit is attached to the child profile.

Xbox Series X|S: exact family and privacy path

On the console, sign in with an adult account and follow this path:

  • 10RID052
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Account, then Family.
  3. Select the child.
  4. Open Privacy & online safety and Content restrictions.

The Xbox Family Settings app provides the same family controls from a phone. It can filter games by age, block a specific title, set screen-time limits, require adult purchase approval and restrict voice, text and invitations.

Block by age or block GTA VI specifically

Use content restrictions to set the child’s permitted game rating below M. If you want an explicit title-level rule, use the Family Settings app to block the individual game. The two approaches serve different purposes: an age ceiling covers every game in a rating category, while a title block lets you keep a broader age setting and deny one named game.

Restrict voice, text and invitations

In Xbox Network privacy, find Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites and choose Friends or Block. This setting governs contact through the network, including invitations that may arrive outside the game’s own menus. Recheck it after changing the child’s privacy preset or joining a family group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Require approval and audit wallet funds

Turn on adult approval for purchases in the child’s family settings. Then review every stored payment method and gift-card balance. Approval does not necessarily prevent spending from funds already loaded into the account; Xbox specifically warns that gift-card funds can still be used. Remove or transfer balances if you want every purchase to require a conversation with an adult.

Set a schedule in Family Settings

Choose the child, open screen-time controls and create daily allowances and downtime. You can vary limits by day, which is useful when weekends differ from school nights. Save the schedule, then test it while the child is signed in so you know which account receives the warning and cutoff.

Use all four guardrails, not just the age filter

Guardrail What it controls Why it is separate
Age or content restriction Whether the child profile can launch games at a chosen rating level It does not control purchases, time or communication.
Purchase approval or spending limit Whether money can be spent on games, downloadable content or other in-game items An age-blocked game can still have purchase paths, and wallet funds may bypass approval.
Play-time schedule When and how long the child can use the console It does not change the game’s rating or content.
Communication and user-created-content controls Voice, text, parties, invitations, broadcasts, comments and shared media These are network and platform permissions, not edits to the game world.

Configure each category before the first session. A console can enforce an age limit while leaving chat open, or limit chat while allowing unlimited play and spending. Treat the settings as a package rather than a single “parental controls” switch.

Buying and redeeming GTA VI safely

Check the account before checkout

Confirm the child’s platform, region and account age rules before purchasing. Because the physical package contains a download code, there is no disc to lend between accounts. Redeem the code on the account that will own the game, and verify that the account’s store region matches the code’s region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep ownership on the adult account when appropriate

If the child is not old enough to use an M-rated game, do not redeem the code to the child profile as a workaround. Keep ownership and payment on the adult account, and use the child profile’s age setting to enforce your decision. Sharing an adult profile defeats the separation that makes family controls reliable.

Plan for in-game purchases

The ESRB listing includes in-game purchases. Decide in advance whether those purchases are prohibited, require an allowance, or need approval each time. On PlayStation, use the child profile’s monthly spending limit. On Xbox, use adult approval and audit both cards and gift-card balances. Review the policy again if the game adds connected features or new purchase categories after launch.

Communication settings for a safer first session

Start with Friends or Block

For a new account, allow communication only with people the family recognizes, or block it entirely. This covers voice, text, party chat and game invitations on the platform. Explain to the child that a friend request is not proof that the sender is known or trustworthy, and that they should report or show an adult any threatening, sexual or manipulative message.

Control player-created content on PlayStation

PlayStation’s family controls include viewing and sharing of screenshots, broadcasts, comments and other player-created content. Restrict both directions if you do not want the child exposed to material from other players or publishing content themselves. These settings are independent of the game’s age level.

Review after account changes

Changing a child’s birthdate, moving an account into a different family, accepting a new privacy preset or linking a Rockstar account can alter what the child can do. After any such change, verify age filtering, communication permissions and purchase approval while signed in as the child.

What these controls cannot do

  • They cannot remove blood, violence, nudity, strong language, sexual content, mature humor or drug-and-alcohol references from GTA VI.
  • They cannot guarantee that every online feature will remain available or age-appropriate; connected requirements can change.
  • They cannot make an adult account behave like a child account. Restrictions must be tested from the child profile.
  • They cannot override a platform-account region mismatch for a download code.

If your family’s rule is “no M-rated content,” the correct action is to keep the child’s age ceiling below M and block the title. If your rule permits supervised access, use the same controls to decide when, how long and with whom the child can play, while recognizing that the mature content remains present.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

GTA VI still launches even though it is blocked

  1. Sign out of the adult profile and sign in to the child profile.
  2. Confirm the child’s birthdate and family membership.
  3. Check that the age ceiling is below the M category or that the individual title is blocked.
  4. Restart the console so the latest family policy is applied.
  5. Look for a second adult or unrestricted profile that the child may be using.

The child can buy items despite approval

Check whether the purchase is drawing on a stored gift-card balance, which Xbox says can remain spendable with approval enabled. Inspect every saved card, wallet balance and subscription payment path. On PlayStation, verify the child’s monthly spending limit and the account selected at checkout.

Chat is available after you selected Block

Confirm that the restriction was changed on the child profile, not only on the adult account. On Xbox, revisit Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites in Xbox Network privacy. On PlayStation, review communication and player-created-content controls separately; one permission does not automatically change the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The download code will not redeem

Check the region associated with the platform account and compare it with the code’s region. A physical package is a code, not a disc, so changing consoles will not solve a regional mismatch. Contact the retailer or platform support with proof of purchase if the regions match but redemption still fails.

A time limit does not stop play

Verify that the child is signed in to the scheduled account, that the console clock and time zone are correct, and that the schedule was saved for the current day. Test the warning and cutoff while you are present. On PlayStation, the documented behavior includes notification and automatic logout when the limit expires; Xbox provides equivalent controls through its family settings.

A practical pre-launch checklist

  • Create a child account with the correct birthdate and a parent-only password or PIN.
  • Set the child’s game rating below ESRB M, or use the Xbox Family Settings app to block GTA VI specifically.
  • Choose whether communication is Friends or Block for voice, text, parties and invitations.
  • On PlayStation, set viewing and sharing permissions for screenshots, broadcasts, comments and other player-created content.
  • Set daily play limits and downtime, then test the warning and cutoff.
  • Enable PlayStation’s monthly spending limit or Xbox adult purchase approval.
  • Remove unnecessary stored cards and inspect gift-card balances.
  • Confirm the platform-account region before buying or redeeming the physical download code.
  • Check Rockstar-account age, internet and possible fee requirements for connected features.
  • Recheck every setting after a major console, game or account update.

When to revisit the rules

Review the setup when the child changes age brackets, receives a new console, joins a different family group, begins using a new account, or asks for online communication. Also revisit it after a game update, because store descriptions and online requirements can change. Keep the adult PIN private and make the child request changes through the family-management process rather than borrowing an unrestricted profile.
