To set up ChatGPT parental controls, link your account to your teen’s account: on the web, open Profile menu > Settings > Parental controls > Add family member, invite them by phone or email, and have them accept. You can then adjust available safeguards and schedules, but linking does not let you read their chats or monitor their activity.
Link a parent or guardian account to a teen’s account
Either person can start the invitation. For the parent or guardian flow on the web:

- Open ChatGPT and select the profile menu.
- Choose Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Add family member.
- Under Invite family member, choose Use phone or Use email.
- Enter the teen’s phone number or email address and select Send.
- Ask the teen to open the invitation link they receive by text or email, or the in-app notification, and accept it.
- After acceptance, return to Settings > Parental controls and select the teen under Family members to review or change settings.
A teen can invite a parent or guardian from Settings > Parental controls > Invite a parent: choose phone or email, enter the adult’s contact details, and send the invitation. If the adult has already sent an invitation, the teen can use Accept invite in the same settings area. Once linked, the teen can see which managed settings are on or off, but cannot change those settings. One adult can link to multiple teens; each teen can be linked to only one adult at a time. Either person can unlink the accounts. OpenAI’s parental-controls guide has the current setup details.
Choose what the controls affect
Open Settings > Parental controls, select the teen under Family members, and review each available control. Defaults and availability can vary by feature or region; the settings listed below reflect OpenAI’s guide.

Study mode and Study hours do not apply to GPT or Project conversations. Quiet hours are the schedule that restricts use; Study hours only change how eligible new conversations begin. If you turn off a feature control, the related feature is hidden or blocked. Turning it on makes the feature available while other safety protections continue to apply. Some changes may take time to apply, and settings limited to new conversations may not change existing chats.
Understand the separate ChatGPT Work controls
Codex network access and Cloud browser are separate controls. Turning off Codex network access prevents code run by ChatGPT Work from connecting to online services; it does not control Search, plugins, connectors, or Cloud browser. Turning off Cloud browser blocks ChatGPT Work’s built-in cloud browser.

Use ChatGPT to request supported changes
For some supported controls, a parent can ask ChatGPT to review or update a linked teen’s setting and then approve or deny the requested change. Invitations, account linking, and some settings still need to be handled in Settings > Parental controls.
Know what linking does—and does not—show you
Linking is not a way to inspect a teen’s chats: parents and guardians cannot access conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. Safety notifications are enabled by default after linking. In limited situations involving a serious concern, OpenAI may send a notification with a brief description, a relevant account action, and support resources, but not chat transcripts or history. Depending on contact details and preferences, notifications may arrive by email, SMS, or push. See the parental-controls FAQ for notification guidance.

If you receive a safety notification, OpenAI advises checking in with your teen, listening without judgment, and helping them reach a trusted person, qualified professional, or crisis helpline. If there is an immediate threat, contact local emergency services.

OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and requires parental consent for users ages 13 to 18. ChatGPT for Teens is available to eligible teen accounts on Free and paid personal plans. OpenAI may enable the teen experience when account-provided information, verified age, or age prediction indicates that the user is under 18. When ChatGPT identifies an account holder as 18 or older and moves the account out of the teen experience, both the account holder and linked parent or guardian are notified. Teen protections turn off by default, parental controls end, schedules stop managing the account, and the former parent no longer manages settings or receives teen safety notifications. Other account settings do not automatically change. The account holder can set up parental controls again, but must accept a new invitation. More detail is available in OpenAI’s guide to what changes when a user turns 18.
If the account leaves the teen experience too soon
The account holder should check Settings > Account > Age and use Verify age if the option is available. A parent cannot verify age on the teen’s behalf, and reviewing the age category alone does not restore teen protections.
