If the developer makes the Playtest available again, players who already had access can return without signing up again. A separate developer action called a reset removes participants and disables Playtest keys.
What happens when a Steam Playtest ends?
Steam Playtests are separate apps associated with a main game, with their own access controls. The developer controls whether the Playtest is available and can mark it Not Playable. While it is in that state, Steam will not launch the Playtest app.

That change is not the same as removing your access. Valve’s Steam Playtest documentation says deactivation does not automatically revoke a Playtest key already granted. Steam’s documentation does not set a universal end date or duration for tests; availability depends on the developer’s actions.
Can you play again if the developer reopens it?
Yes, if the developer makes the Playtest available again and you were already granted access. Valve says players who had access retain it and do not need to sign up or be granted access again. You can then launch the Playtest through Steam while it is available.

If you had not been admitted before the test closed, reopening does not guarantee you access. You may need to sign up or follow the developer’s instructions for the reopened test.
How ending, reopening, and resetting differ

A reset is therefore materially different from temporarily ending a test. Valve documents the reset consequences on its Steam Playtest page.
How to check a specific Playtest
- Open the game’s Steam store page and look for the Playtest section or availability information.
- Check the developer’s Steam announcements or other official updates for a reopening date or instructions.
- If the Playtest is not launchable, check whether the developer has said it is temporarily unavailable or has been reset. Steam’s general documentation cannot reveal an individual game’s current status.
Do not confuse Playtest access with main-game beta keys
A Steam Playtest has access controls separate from the main game. Valve’s Testing On Steam documentation discusses release override keys for testing the main game separately; those keys may be revoked with Valve’s key-banning tool. That process is not the same as a developer marking a Playtest Not Playable or resetting its participants and Playtest keys.
