Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a USB-C touchscreen to work over one cable, the host port, display, and cable must support video, USB touch data, and enough power. A USB-C-shaped port alone guarantees none of those functions. Check the specifications for your exact devices and cable before troubleshooting or buying anything.
What a reliable USB-C touchscreen connection needs
A USB-C cable can carry several different signals, but not every USB-C port or cable supports all of them. A working connection depends on three separate paths:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Video: The host must send video through a mode the display accepts, commonly DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) or a compatible Thunderbolt implementation.
- Touch and other USB data: Touch input travels as USB data. A connection that carries video and power but not USB data can show an image while leaving the touchscreen unresponsive.
- Power: The host must supply enough power for that display, or the display must accept power from an external supply.
For its 1004LS, 1304LS, and 1504LS touchmonitors, Elo’s technical support guidance describes a single USB-C connection carrying power, video, and touch. Elo specifies DP Alt Mode video, USB data, and Power Delivery for this arrangement. That is a model-specific example, not a universal promise about USB-C displays.

Check compatibility before you connect
Confirm that the host can output video
Look up the exact computer, tablet, or phone model and the specifications for the specific USB-C port you plan to use. Confirm that it supports display output in a mode the monitor accepts. Charging support or data transfer over USB-C does not establish video support. Dell notes that, for its cited portable monitors, a port limited to data or Power Delivery will not provide video; DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt is required. Microsoft likewise advises checking alternate-mode support on the host, display, and cable.

Some devices use a separate display technology such as DisplayLink rather than DP Alt Mode. ASUS distinguishes these approaches and recommends checking device specifications; do not assume that a DisplayLink-based setup works the same way as a direct DP Alt Mode connection.
Check how touch data reaches the host
Find out whether the monitor supports touch through its USB-C connection or needs a separate USB data connection. The cable, dock, or adapter path must preserve USB data for touch to work. If a picture appears but touch does not, start by checking the data path rather than the video connection.

Verify power for the particular display
Compare the monitor’s stated power requirement with the output available from the host port. Requirements vary by model: Plugable says its USBC-PDMON requires 15 W, while LG’s support guidance for the referenced gram +view connection specifies at least 7.5 W (5 V / 1.5 A) from the host. These are examples for those products, not general thresholds for portable monitors.
If the monitor accepts external power, its manufacturer may specify a compatible supply and minimum wattage. External power can address a power shortfall, but it cannot give a host video capability that its port lacks.

Choose a cable and connection path that preserve all three functions
Use the supplied cable when available, or choose a cable explicitly rated for the video mode, USB data, and power required by the display. A cable’s USB-C connectors do not by themselves confirm that it supports the functions your setup needs.
A direct connection to the host is the clearest baseline. Hubs and dongles add another compatibility point: they must preserve the video mode, USB data for touch, and any required power delivery. Microsoft advises checking cable compatibility and considering adapters or hubs as possible connection variables.

Do not assume a USB-C-to-HDMI or USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable is an equivalent substitute for a monitor’s USB-C connection. Dell notes that such cables may not work with its cited USB-C monitors, and wiring differs by model. Follow the display manual for supported inputs and connection arrangements.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot by isolating video, touch, and power
- Check the host: Find the exact device and port specifications and confirm that the port supports the display mode your monitor requires.
- Check the monitor: Consult its manual for supported inputs, power requirements, and whether touch uses the same cable or a separate USB connection.
- Use a known-capable cable: Start with the supplied cable or one rated for the required video mode, USB data, and power.
- Connect directly: Temporarily remove a hub or dongle to establish whether the host-to-display connection works without it.
- If the screen is blank: Verify video-mode support on the host, cable, and display. Then check whether your chosen adapter or alternate wiring is supported by the monitor.
- If video works but touch does not: Check whether USB data reaches the host, including through any adapter, hub, or separate USB cable required by the display.
- If the display flickers, resets, or turns off: Check the model’s power requirement. If the monitor supports external power, use a supply that meets its manufacturer’s stated requirement. For Plugable’s USBC-PDMON, Plugable says an external USB PD supply rated at 15 W or higher is recommended when the host cannot provide the required 15 W.
- If you connect by HDMI: Treat video, touch data, and monitor power as separate paths unless the monitor manual explicitly describes a combined solution.
