Yes. ChatGPT offers optional parental controls that link a parent or guardian’s account to a teen’s account. The adult can manage selected features and schedules and may receive limited safety notifications—but cannot read the teen’s chats, see chat history, or monitor activity in real time. These controls are separate from ChatGPT’s teen protections, which may be enabled automatically for eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18.
How to link a parent and teen account
Either the parent or the teen can start the invitation. On the web, the parent can go to Settings > Parental controls > Add family member, choose phone or email, enter the teen’s contact information, and send the invitation. The teen accepts it in ChatGPT. Alternatively, the teen can invite a parent or guardian from Settings > Parental controls. After linking, select the teen under Family members to review available controls. See OpenAI’s parental-controls setup instructions.

What parents can control
Parental controls cover selected features and schedules, not every part of a teen’s account. The documented settings include:
- Reduce sensitive content: Adds safeguards intended to reduce sensitive or age-inappropriate content. It is enabled by default for linked teen accounts in the documented settings.
- Improve the model for everyone: Controls whether the teen’s conversations can be used to help improve ChatGPT models. It is enabled by default in the documented settings.
- Reference saved memories: Controls whether saved memories can be used for personalization. Availability and the default may vary by region.
- Voice Mode and image generation: Parents can control whether the teen can use these features. They are enabled by default in the documented settings.
- Study mode: Determines whether eligible new conversations in the main ChatGPT experience start in Study mode. It does not apply to GPT or Project conversations, and it does not block the teen from using Study mode.
- Study hours: An optional schedule that starts eligible new conversations in the main experience in Study mode. It is off by default and does not block ChatGPT access.
- Quiet hours: Scheduled periods when the teen cannot use ChatGPT, including ChatGPT Work. They are off until scheduled.
- ChatGPT Work controls: Codex network access and the built-in cloud browser can be managed separately. The Codex network-access control does not control Search, plugins, connectors, or the cloud browser.
Turning off most controls hides or blocks the related feature; turning one on makes it available while other ChatGPT safety protections continue to apply. Some changes may take time to apply or affect only new conversations, so an existing conversation may retain its previous settings. Study hours and Quiet hours are different
Study hours change how eligible new conversations begin: they start in Study mode. They do not prevent ChatGPT use. Quiet hours, by contrast, are scheduled periods when ChatGPT cannot be used. Both are optional schedules, and each is off by default until set.
What parents cannot see
Linking accounts does not give a parent access to the teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. Parental controls are not a chat-monitoring feature. OpenAI explains this privacy boundary in its parental-controls FAQ.

When a parent may receive a safety notification
OpenAI says a linked parent may be notified in limited situations, including a serious self-harm concern identified by specially trained reviewers, certain disordered-eating concerns that could signal a health concern, or a teen account deactivated for conversations relating to acts of violence under OpenAI’s Usage Policies. The disordered-eating notifications described by OpenAI apply to Chat conversations, not Work or Codex; account-deactivation review processes may differ. The official FAQ describes these notification limits.

Parental controls versus ChatGPT’s teen protections
ChatGPT for Teens is the teen experience, with age-appropriate safeguards and learning-oriented tools. OpenAI says eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 may have this experience enabled automatically. Account linking through Parental controls is optional, so a teen’s access to the teen experience does not depend on linking a parent’s account. OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and requires parental consent for users ages 13 to 18. It also advises caution because ChatGPT may produce output inappropriate for some audiences. These age and consent rules are separate from the optional account-linking feature; consult OpenAI’s Terms of Use for its stated requirements.

If OpenAI identifies a linked teen account as belonging to someone 18 or older and moves it out of ChatGPT for Teens, teen protections are turned off by default and the parental-controls link ends. The account holder then controls their own settings, and the former parent can no longer manage the account or receive teen safety notifications. A parent may send another invitation, but the account holder must accept it. Details are in OpenAI’s parental-controls FAQ.

What sensitive-content safeguards do—and do not—promise
Reduce sensitive content is intended to lower the chance of responses involving certain sensitive, explicit, graphic, or age-inappropriate material. OpenAI’s examples include graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or violent roleplay, and content promoting extreme beauty standards or unhealthy dieting. The company cautions that “No system is perfect”: the setting does not guarantee every response will be appropriate. Other teen protections and safety systems may still apply even if this particular setting is turned off. Read OpenAI’s explanation of Reduce sensitive content.
