Turn on useful touchscreen gestures in Windows 11
Gesture controls are separate from display-size settings. To enable the available touchscreen gestures, right-click Start, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touch, and use the controls there. Microsoft’s Windows 11 touch-gesture guide describes these options; labels can vary slightly after Windows updates.

- Turn on Three and four-finger touch gestures to use multi-finger touchscreen actions.
- Expand Touch screen edge gestures and enable the left-edge or right-edge swipes you want.
What the gestures do
- Tap: select an item.
- Two-finger slide: scroll.
- Pinch or stretch: zoom in or out.
- Press and hold: open more commands, similar to a right-click.
- Three-finger swipe up: show open windows; swipe down to show the desktop; swipe sideways to switch apps.
- Four-finger swipe sideways: switch desktops.
- One-finger edge swipes: in the listed Windows 11 behavior, swipe from the right edge to open Notification Center and from the left edge to show widgets.
There is a trade-off to know about: Microsoft notes that enabling three- and four-finger touchscreen gestures can prevent some apps from receiving those same interactions as app-specific gestures.

Open Settings > System > Display. If you use more than one display, select the screen you want to adjust first. Under Scale & layout, choose an option in Scale. Microsoft says the option marked Recommended is typically the best starting point for that display. Scaling changes the apparent size of text and apps while retaining the display resolution. Leave Display resolution at its Recommended value for ordinary use. A lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp, or make the picture appear small and centered, bordered by black, or stretched. Resolution is not a text-size control.
If only text is too small
Use Windows accessibility’s Make text bigger control instead of lowering resolution. It targets text specifically; display scaling is the broader option when apps and other interface elements also need to be larger. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance for making Windows easier to see covers text-size adjustments.

If the resolution changed unexpectedly
Return to Settings > System > Display and select the recommended resolution. If the problem persists, Microsoft advises checking for graphics driver updates through Windows Update.
Windows 10 differences and tablet behavior
Windows 10 has its own gesture and display instructions, with different menu locations and a different set of listed touchscreen actions. Its gesture guide covers standard two-finger gestures and one-finger edge actions; do not assume the Windows 11 three- and four-finger touchscreen controls are available in the same way. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so devices still running it no longer receive standard security support. Refer to Microsoft’s gesture documentation and display guidance for version-specific steps.

Windows 11 does not provide a manual tablet-mode switch. Microsoft Support states, “Windows 11 doesn’t have an option to manually turn tablet mode on or off.” Touch-friendly behavior adjusts automatically on touch-capable devices, including according to whether a keyboard is connected or the device has been converted to tablet form. You do not need to find a tablet-mode toggle to configure touchscreen gestures; use the Touch settings instead. See Microsoft’s tablet-mode guidance.
