There are three practical ways to run OpenClaw: use a managed hosted service, deploy it to a VPS, or install it locally for testing. A managed service reduces server work; a VPS gives you more control but makes you responsible for credentials, logs, updates, and security; a local install depends on your computer staying on and connected.
Choose the setup that fits how you’ll use OpenClaw
| Route | Best suited to | Control and upkeep | Core sequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed OpenClaw | Beginners or people who want a hosted launch with less server administration | The provider manages the hosted environment and infrastructure updates; you choose a model/provider option and connect a channel. | Choose an available plan and AI option, select a channel, complete deployment, then open the instance from the account dashboard. |
| OpenClaw VPS template | People who want a VPS and dashboard-based Docker management | More server control; you manage the project, logs, restarts, updates, and secrets. | Provision a VPS, configure a gateway token and any needed credentials, deploy, then open the dashboard through Docker Manager. |
| Manual VPS | Technical users who need direct control of Docker, environment settings, providers, access, and updates | Highest administration burden; you maintain the VPS and OpenClaw deployment. | Prepare Linux and Docker, clone the repository, run setup and onboarding, configure a model, verify containers, access the dashboard, then connect a channel. |
| Local testing | People evaluating OpenClaw before choosing a hosted setup | Depends on your computer and local services; it is not an always-on service if your computer shuts down or loses internet. | Follow the current OpenClaw installation documentation for your operating system. |
Choose managed hosting if minimizing server maintenance matters most. Choose a VPS if you want to control the server and are prepared to maintain it. Use a local installation to evaluate the software, not as a substitute for an always-on host.

Set up a managed OpenClaw instance
Managed OpenClaw is the least hands-on hosted route: the provider describes its service as automating server management, infrastructure updates, and security settings in an isolated Docker environment. That is the provider’s description, not an independent security audit. Availability is rolling out by region, so check whether the service appears in your account before planning around it. Plan details, credit bundles, and channel choices can vary by region and checkout flow; verify what is offered at the time you sign up.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Sign in to the hosting account and open the currently available Managed OpenClaw or AI automation plan flow.
- Choose a plan duration and review any offered add-ons. Some flows have described Ready-to-Use AI credits through Nexos AI and optional web-search credits through Oxylabs; do not assume either option or a particular allowance is universally available.
- Choose how OpenClaw will access a model. If you are not using included AI credits, enter a supported provider’s API key during onboarding. The provider’s OpenClaw installation page lists Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, and xAI as examples; check current compatibility and options in the setup flow.
- Select a channel offered in the current flow and complete its connection prompts. OpenClaw’s setup documentation describes WhatsApp QR pairing and Telegram using a BotFather bot token. A managed guide has also documented an email option and described Discord as under development at the time that page was accessed; availability may have changed.
- Finish deployment, then open the instance from OpenClaw Overview in the account’s hPanel. Save the access or gateway token somewhere private.
- Send a first message through the connected channel and answer the assistant’s initial preference questions.
Do not treat an advertised setup estimate as a guarantee. OpenClaw’s documentation has described setup as “About 5-10 minutes”; actual time depends on availability, choices, and whether channel or provider credentials are ready.

Deploy OpenClaw with a VPS template
A VPS template uses Docker while letting you manage the project through Docker Manager. The hosting guide recommends KVM2 or higher for OpenClaw, but VPS names and specifications can change; check the current plan details rather than relying on an old plan label.
For a new VPS
- Choose a VPS plan that meets the current OpenClaw requirements. During provisioning, OpenClaw may already be selected as the application.
- Choose an available AI-credit option or plan to provide your own supported provider credentials. Optional web-search credits may also appear in some flows.
- Save the automatically generated
OPENCLAW_GATEWAY_TOKEN. Add provider API keys only if you are using an external provider, and enter channel details—such as a WhatsApp number or Telegram bot token—if prompted and appropriate. - Deploy the VPS. Wait for the Docker project to show as running, then open the application through Docker Manager.
- Copy the gateway token from Docker Manager and use it to authenticate to the OpenClaw dashboard. Send a brief test message and confirm that the assistant responds.
For an existing VPS
- Open Docker Manager and use its catalog or deploy flow to create an OpenClaw project.
- Configure the gateway token, provider credentials, and channel details needed for your setup, then launch the project.
- When the project is running, open the dashboard through Docker Manager and authenticate with the gateway token.
Docker Manager provides project controls such as logs, restarts, and image updates. The current OpenClaw guide describes an Update control that pulls the latest image and restarts the container; labels and behavior can change, so confirm the current interface before following a button-by-button guide.

Install OpenClaw manually on a VPS
The manual route is for people comfortable administering Linux over SSH, using Docker, managing provider credentials, and inspecting logs. A hosting tutorial lists Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 as examples, root or sudo access, Docker and Docker Compose, at least 2 GB of RAM (4 GB recommended), and 10 GB or more of disk. These are the tutorial’s stated guidance, not independently benchmarked workload requirements; actual needs vary with usage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Prepare the server. Set up a Linux VPS, confirm that Docker and Docker Compose work, and install Git if needed.
- Clone OpenClaw. Use the repository URL https://github.com/openclaw/openclaw.git. Follow the project’s current installation instructions, because repository setup commands can change.
- Run the Docker setup. The tutorial’s sequence runs
./docker-setup.shfrom the repository. Check the current OpenClaw documentation before copying commands, as scripts and configuration may change. - Complete onboarding. Select local gateway mode for the VPS and follow the onboarding wizard.
- Configure a model and security settings. Choose a supported provider and model, supply the required credential securely, and configure access before exposing any dashboard or service.
- Verify the containers. Check
docker compose psand inspect the gateway logs if the project does not start or respond as expected. - Open the dashboard securely. Authenticate with the generated gateway token. OpenClaw’s VPS guidance recommends keeping the Gateway bound to loopback and reaching it remotely through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale where possible. Do not make public exposure of port 18789 the default troubleshooting step.
- Connect a channel. Complete the chosen channel’s current setup. For Telegram, the tutorial describes creating a bot with BotFather and using its token; treat that token as a secret.
A VPS deployment also needs a secured administrator access path. Gateway access and host administration are separate controls: protect both, and do not assume that securing one secures the other.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
Use a local installation for evaluation
A local setup is useful when you want to test OpenClaw before choosing a hosted route. The tutorial’s local section is a high-level comparison, not a complete, current installation recipe. Follow the current OpenClaw installation documentation for your operating system rather than relying on an abbreviated set of steps. If your computer is turned off or disconnected, a local instance will not remain online for channel interactions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check a deployment when it does not respond
Start with the visible status and logs rather than guessing at a single cause. Missing or invalid credentials, port conflicts, Docker configuration, permissions, and firewall or provider network rules are all possible issues.

- Manual VPS: Check container status with
docker compose ps, then inspect gateway logs for startup or connection errors. - Channel messages fail: Confirm the channel is connected in the dashboard and that any bot token or pairing step is current.
- The dashboard cannot be reached: Verify the project state and the access method you configured. If using a loopback-bound Gateway remotely, establish the SSH tunnel or Tailscale path instead of opening the Gateway to the public internet.
Once the dashboard is available, a short chat is a simple first check. The dashboard also provides controls for channels, sessions, scheduled tasks, agents, skills, nodes, and settings. A scheduled digest can test a more involved workflow; expect to specify topics, sources, language, length, and delivery channel.

Protect credentials, access, and OpenClaw data
- Keep gateway tokens, provider API keys, and messaging bot tokens private. Do not post them publicly or commit them to version control.
- Prefer loopback binding for the Gateway and remote access through an SSH tunnel or Tailscale, following OpenClaw’s VPS guidance.
- Secure VPS administrator access separately from Gateway access.
- Back up OpenClaw’s state and workspace regularly. OpenClaw’s Linux server guidance says, “The Gateway runs on the VPS and owns state + workspace.” The VPS therefore holds the deployment’s working data.
- For a shared team instance, OpenClaw recommends a dedicated runtime and users within the same trust boundary. If team members may be adversarial to one another, use separate gateways, hosts, or users.
