Its biggest drawback is the 60Hz display: if smooth scrolling, an always-on screen or newer camera hardware matter to you, compare it with the iPhone 17 before buying. The iPhone 16 makes the most sense if you prefer its smaller size and find it at a meaningful, verified discount.
What the iPhone 16 gets right
Compact, bright OLED display
Apple specifies a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with 2556 by 1179 resolution, 460 pixels per inch and peak outdoor brightness of up to 2,000 nits. At 170 grams, the phone is also relatively light; that combination may suit people who want a smaller handset rather than a large-screen model. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent display measurements. Apple’s iPhone 16 specifications list the panel and body details.

Versatile cameras, despite having two rear lenses
The rear system pairs a 48MP Fusion main camera with a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The main camera has sensor-shift optical image stabilization and offers 2x optical-quality framing; this is a crop-based framing option, not a separate telephoto lens. The ultra-wide has a 120-degree field of view and supports macro photography, giving it a close-up use beyond expansive scenes. Rear video recording supports 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames per second. The front TrueDepth camera is 12MP and also supports 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60 frames per second. These figures describe features and formats, not a guarantee of a particular photo result. Apple’s technical specifications detail the camera hardware.

A capable platform and practical controls
The iPhone 16 uses Apple’s A18 chip, with a six-core CPU, five-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine. Roman Loyola’s October 2, 2024 Macworld review praised its processing and graphics performance; that assessment is dated reviewer evidence, not a current benchmark. The phone also supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and USB-C, and includes both an Action button and Camera Control. Macworld found Camera Control useful for frequent photography, while noting it takes practice to use to its potential. Macworld’s review covers its impressions of performance and controls.

What you give up
A 60Hz screen without always-on display
The OLED panel is bright and sharp, but Macworld identified its 60Hz refresh rate and lack of an always-on display as drawbacks. Scrolling and animations are less fluid than on a 120Hz screen. If you are upgrading from a phone with a higher refresh rate, this may be more noticeable than the resolution or brightness figures suggest.
No dedicated optical telephoto camera
The 2x option provides optical-quality framing from the main camera, but there is no separate telephoto lens. People who often photograph distant subjects should not mistake the 2x option for the flexibility of a dedicated longer-reach camera.

Battery life is a stated estimate, not a daily guarantee
Apple rates the iPhone 16 for up to 22 hours of video playback, up to 18 hours of streamed video playback and up to 80 hours of audio playback. These are Apple’s estimates; actual endurance varies with usage, network conditions, settings, software and battery condition. Apple says charging can reach 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter and USB-C cable, or with a 30W-or-higher adapter paired with a MagSafe Charger. The required charging accessories are sold separately. See Apple’s specifications and Apple Support’s iPhone 16 technical information for the stated conditions.
Water resistance has limits
Apple specifies an IP68 rating under IEC standard 60529, with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. That rating is a controlled-condition specification, not a promise that every water exposure will be harmless.

iPhone 16 or iPhone 17?
The newer iPhone 17 is the more compelling comparison for shoppers who care about the display and camera updates. TechRadar’s comparison describes a 120Hz screen, upgraded ultra-wide and front cameras, and an A19 chip on the iPhone 17. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guide also points to more starting storage on the newer model. The iPhone 16 remains smaller and lighter, and could cost less, but the actual value depends on the local price, storage, condition and seller.

The comparison details come from TechRadar’s iPhone 17 versus iPhone 16 comparison and Tom’s Guide’s 2026 iPhone buying guide. Their price and availability information can change; check like-for-like configurations in your market rather than relying on a launch price or an old listing.

Who should buy the iPhone 16?
- Choose it if you want a smaller, lighter iPhone, are comfortable with 60Hz, and will use its main and ultra-wide camera features.
- Compare the iPhone 17 first if you want a smoother display, always-on functionality, upgraded front or ultra-wide cameras, a newer chip or more starting storage.
- Wait or shop carefully if the iPhone 16 is close in price to a comparable iPhone 17. Check storage, condition, warranty, network compatibility and seller, since a discount that is not meaningful may not compensate for the newer model’s upgrades.
Repair and packaging notes
Apple’s June 2025 Product Environmental Report says battery removal on iPhone 16 is 75% faster than on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, and that packaging volume was reduced by 8% versus packaging for those models. These are manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independent repair tests or measures of total environmental impact. Apple’s iPhone 16 Product Environmental Report provides the figures.
