Set up Meta Muse around one household task, connect only the service that task needs, and start with read access wherever it is available. Grant write access only when Muse must change something, and keep approval switched on for consequential actions. A connected account is not a reason to give an agent blanket access to family data.
What Meta Muse can do—and what a family setup means
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent that can browse, use connected apps, work through multi-step tasks, and continue work in the background. Its examples include checking calendars, planning trips, preparing dinner menus, building grocery lists, and remembering dietary restrictions. That makes it relevant to household tasks, but the available product information does not establish a shared family account, family-member roles, or child-account controls. Treat this as one adult configuring an assistant for household work, not as a family account with separate permissions for everyone. Meta’s launch announcement

Muse is described as available through its app and WhatsApp, with a web rollout also announced. At launch, Meta said it was rolling out on iOS, Android, and the web; launch-era reporting described availability in the United States and eligibility for people 18 and older. Those details can change, so check the current app and local terms rather than assuming launch conditions still apply. Meta announcement Associated Press launch coverage

Set up Muse around one low-risk household task
A narrow first job makes it easier to see what access is actually necessary. For example, ask Muse to check calendar availability or assemble a meal plan from a recipe. Avoid an open-ended request such as “manage our family life”: it does not define which accounts, information, or actions are in scope.

- Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.
- Choose the task. Define what a successful result looks like, such as finding a free time for a family appointment or turning a recipe into a grocery list.
- Connect only the service needed. Meta says users choose which apps Muse connects to and can later change access or disconnect a service. Do not connect email, calendars, social accounts, or other household data simply because a connector is offered. Use the connection controls in the current Muse app; exact screens may vary by service and app version. Meta’s announcement on connected apps
- Start with read access, if the connector offers it. Reading can support tasks such as checking availability or summarizing information without changing the account. Add only the narrowest write permission needed if Muse must create, edit, send, or otherwise act. Meta says read and write access are separated where the underlying service supports that distinction. Meta AI Research’s technical explanation
- Review each requested action. For a write, check what Muse proposes to do and which account or information it affects before approving. Connecting an account does not itself approve every future action.
- Inspect the activity and permissions after a trial. Check whether the task used only the intended service and whether any requested access exceeds the job. Expand scope only to address a specific need.
- Remove access when the task is over. Disconnect unused services, and review stored memory or files. Meta says users can inspect, edit, and download VM files and memory, and can ask Muse to forget particular information. Meta’s user-control description
Understand what each permission allows
Meta’s connector guidelines distinguish three action classes. The exact options depend on the connector, but the distinction helps you decide whether a request fits the household task. Meta connector guidelines
| Action class | What it does | Approval behavior in Meta’s connector guidance | Practical household example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read | Retrieves information without changing data or account state. | Asks on first use by default; eligible tools can be allowed once, always allowed, or denied. | Check calendar availability or retrieve information for a plan. |
| Write | Changes data or acts on the user’s behalf. | Asks on first use by default; eligible nonsensitive tools can be allowed once, always allowed, or denied. | Create or edit an item when the task requires it. |
| Sensitive write | Performs a consequential or potentially irreversible action, such as a purchase or sending an email. | Requires approval for each use; the choices are allow once or deny, not always allow. | Send a message or make a purchase only after checking the specific action. |
Meta says always-allow permissions can be revoked. Its technical article describes Sentinel as evaluating connector requests against the user’s policy and either allowing, denying, or routing an action for approval. Meta also says Muse can apply finer-grained controls than broad OAuth permission groups where supported. These are descriptions of Meta’s system design, not an independent security audit. Keep oversight for actions that matter
Do not rely on a prompt such as “never send anything without asking” as the only safeguard. Use the product’s permission controls, and treat an approval request as a decision about that specific action: confirm the recipient, content, amount, or other material details before allowing it. Meta’s product FAQ says Muse asks before certain actions, including sending messages, making purchases, or sharing information with a connected app; use the current app’s approval controls as the operational authority. Know what Meta says about data and memory
Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with its ad systems. Separately, Meta says sanitized conversation and tool-use trajectories may be used to train model checkpoints unless the user opts out in Muse settings. Check the current settings if you do not want that use. Meta announcement Meta AI Research technical article
Meta also says it may access VM data when necessary to support, secure, or operate the service. Its announcement described Confidential VM as a future capability intended to cryptographically prevent Meta from accessing the VM; that announcement does not establish it as a currently available setting. When to expand access—and when to stop
- Keep access narrow if Muse can complete the task by reading information or producing a plan for you to act on.
- Add a write permission only when the task genuinely requires Muse to change an account, and only to the extent the connector permits.
- Keep sensitive approvals per action. Do not treat convenience as a reason to bypass review of sending, purchasing, or sharing.
- Revisit the setup when the household task changes, a new service is connected, or stored information is no longer useful.
- Disconnect what you no longer use and review memory controls rather than leaving old access in place indefinitely.
