How to Check Whether Study Notes and Flashcards Are Accurate

Test recall, compare each claim with authoritative course material, correct mistakes, and keep a source reference so you can trust your notes and flashcards.

To check whether a note or flashcard is accurate, try to recall or explain it without looking, then compare it with the materials that define your course: instructor materials, assigned readings, lecture notes or recordings, and feedback. Correct errors and gaps, record the source, and ask your instructor or a tutor when reliable course sources conflict or leave the point unresolved. Remembering an answer tests recall; checking it against a source tests whether it is right.

Check claims against the right source

Start with the source most authoritative for your particular class. That is usually the instructor’s slides, handouts, lecture or feedback, together with the assigned textbook or reading. A general website may explain an idea clearly, but it may not reflect the course’s terminology, assumptions, or required level of detail.

Choose a source that covers the exact claim and its conditions, is current for the class, and can resolve the specific uncertainty. If two course sources seem to disagree, or neither addresses the point, ask the instructor or a tutor rather than choosing whichever explanation sounds more plausible. The University of Arkansas recommends rereading the relevant textbook passage or talking with an instructor or tutor when content is confusing (University of Arkansas study guidance).

A repeatable accuracy-checking workflow

  1. Pick a claim to check. Prioritize unfamiliar facts, absolute statements such as “always” or “never,” dates and numbers, formulas, causal explanations, and points you cannot explain. These are useful places to look for mistakes, not a guarantee that other notes are error-free.
  2. Test recall before rereading. Hide the answer or close your notes. Explain the idea in your own words, solve the problem, or answer the prompt from memory. UC San Diego’s approach is to set course materials aside, recall what you learned, then return to the materials to check it (UC San Diego on retrieval practice).
  3. Compare the response with course material. Look at the relevant slide, recording, assigned text, handout, worked example, or instructor feedback. Check not only whether the main idea matches but also whether you left out a condition, exception, step, or unit that changes its meaning.
  4. Label the result. Mark it accurate, inaccurate, incomplete, ambiguous, or unresolved. If you cannot tell which label fits, keep it unresolved rather than turning a guess into a fact.
  5. Correct it and add a source reference. Rewrite the note or answer to match the checked explanation. Record enough detail to find the source again, such as a page, lecture, slide, or handout. UNSW recommends keeping references to sources and adding questions to notes (UNSW on reading, research and note-taking).
  6. Resolve what remains uncertain. Bring the exact question and the sources you compared to your instructor or tutor. This makes it easier to clarify a real disagreement or a missing explanation.
  7. Test it again later. Revisit the corrected material in another study session. Retrieval and spaced review help you practise remembering information, but neither tells you by itself whether the information was originally correct.

How to check written notes

A note should preserve enough context to make its claim interpretable: the topic, relevant definitions or conditions, and where the information came from. A short statement can become misleading when separated from a qualification in the lecture or reading, so check surrounding material when a sentence seems unusually broad.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not discard a point solely because it does not appear in a general textbook. Class notes may include information presented by the instructor that is not covered elsewhere. Compare it with the course context and ask the instructor if the difference matters (UNSW note-taking guidance).

How to check flashcards

Check both the prompt and the answer. The prompt should make clear what you are being asked to retrieve; the answer should match the course source and include any condition or exception needed to make it true. A card that asks for one word may be inadequate if the course expects you to explain a process or apply a concept.

Build cards from course materials, then check their answers against those materials rather than treating the card as proof of its own accuracy. For reasoning, application, or multi-step methods, use practice problems or write a fuller explanation instead of compressing the skill into a misleadingly simple card. Duke recommends course-grounded practice tests and checking retrieved information against course materials (Duke Academic Resource Center on retrieval practice). McGill describes practice testing with both short and longer questions, including problems (McGill study tactics).

What retrieval and spaced review can—and cannot—tell you

Trying to retrieve an answer is useful for finding what you can recall and where your understanding may be incomplete. UC San Diego reports that “over 200 studies from over a century of research have demonstrated benefits of retrieval practice on memory.” That finding concerns memory benefits; it does not establish that a particular note or flashcard is factually correct.

Spaced practice helps distribute review over time. University of Delaware presents a study sequence that connects checking recall against notes or slides with making flashcards or collecting questions (University of Delaware learning strategies); the University of Cincinnati also recommends checking recall against notes and reviewing over several days (University of Cincinnati study skills). These are study approaches, not accuracy guarantees or a single schedule that suits every class.

Practice can take different forms, including quizzes, flashcards, and problems, depending on what the course expects you to do (Carnegie Mellon University on retrieval practice). Choose a form that lets you demonstrate the relevant skill, then verify the result against course material.
