Before a border crossing, back up your iPhone, remove sensitive files you do not need, and check the destination’s official rules. For travel to the United States, Canadian government advice recommends airplane mode to prevent remote files from downloading accidentally. That disconnects network access; it does not remove information already stored on the phone or prevent a manual inspection.
Prepare the data before you leave
Start by deciding what information you genuinely need during the trip. Government of Canada guidance advises travelers to reduce sensitive information carried across borders because laws and inspection practices vary by destination. Consider private photos, legal documents, financial records, work files, and other material that would create a serious problem if accessed.

Back up and remove files you do not need
- Back up important information. The Government of Canada suggests secure cloud storage or an encrypted external drive kept at home as possible destinations for private files. Use a method you can access securely if needed; the guidance does not prescribe a particular provider or iPhone backup workflow.
- Remove unnecessary sensitive material from the phone. A backup preserves information you may need later, while removing unneeded files reduces what travels with you. Do not assume that moving a file elsewhere makes it inaccessible if a copy remains on the iPhone.
- Consider a travel-only phone if the risk warrants it. Canadian guidance suggests carrying a device with essential, non-sensitive data. This is an option, not a requirement, and it should be weighed against the inconvenience of leaving your usual device behind.
Before a U.S. border inspection, disconnect network access
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) policy says officers will ensure data and network connections are disabled before an examination, either by asking the traveler or doing it themselves. Canada’s U.S. travel advice recommends putting a device in airplane mode before crossing so remote files are not downloaded accidentally. You can also check that cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connections are off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is a connectivity precaution, not a way to conceal or erase local data. CBP says its border search covers information resident on the device when it is presented for inspection, not information stored only remotely. Airplane mode does not prevent an officer from manually reviewing files already on the iPhone.

Know what CBP says about device searches
CBP’s published policy applies at U.S. ports of entry; it should not be treated as a worldwide rule. The agency says all travelers crossing the U.S. border are subject to inspection and officers may search electronic devices on rare occasions. Its policy distinguishes these types of examination:
- Basic search: a manual review of the device without external equipment.
- Advanced search: an examination using external equipment to review, copy, or analyze device contents. CBP policy requires reasonable suspicion of a violation of a law it enforces or administers, or a national-security concern, plus prior approval from a senior manager.
CBP reports that in fiscal year 2024 it searched devices belonging to 47,047 international travelers out of more than 420 million travelers processed at ports of entry. It describes that as approximately 0.3% of secondary inspections and less than 0.01% of arriving international travelers. Of those 47,047 searches, 42,725 (90%) were basic searches. These are CBP figures for FY 2024, not a rate for every country or a guarantee about an individual crossing. See CBP’s policy and statistics.

Understand the consequences of access problems or refusal
CBP says a device that cannot be inspected because of a passcode, encryption, or another security mechanism may be detained, excluded, or otherwise disposed of, and processing can take longer. Its policy distinguishes U.S. citizens from foreign nationals seeking admission when discussing refusal and admissibility. Canadian travel advice similarly warns that refusing a password request at a U.S. border may lead to seizure or delay, and may result in denial of entry for a non-U.S. citizen. The outcome depends on the traveler’s circumstances; neither source makes this an individualized legal determination.
Do not rely on a particular iPhone setting to prevent a search or guarantee admission. If the information on your phone creates significant legal, professional, or personal risks, seek advice from a qualified lawyer familiar with the destination before traveling.

Check destination guidance and answer accurately
Rules for digital information, encryption, media, and online services differ by country. Check current official travel advice for the actual destination rather than applying U.S. guidance everywhere. Canada’s general travel guidance recommends giving honest, clear answers and notes that inconsistencies between a stated travel purpose and device contents may raise concerns. If a device is detained in Canada, the same guidance says you can ask for a receipt stating what was taken and how to retrieve it.
