How to Set Up Local Multiplayer in Re-Volt on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation (and the Supported PC Method)

There is no documented Nintendo Switch or PlayStation setup for Re-Volt in the available authoritative material. The clearly documented local multiplayer route is RVGL on PC, where two to four players can race in split screen. Nintendo’s descriptions of Switch controller modes explain how multiplayer works in general, but they do not confirm that Re-Volt is available on Switch. A current official PlayStation listing was not established either. If you want to play today, verify the exact console edition and its multiplayer features before buying anything; otherwise, use the documented RVGL procedure below.

What is actually supported?

Re-Volt has several multiplayer references that are easy to conflate. The original PC manual describes multiplayer over a connection, while the modern RVGL project documents local, same-screen split-screen play. Neither source is a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation setup guide.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • RVGL on PC: The documentation states support for two to four players in split-screen multiplayer. It also includes a Multiplayer CPU setting for adding computer-controlled opponents.
  • Original PC release: The manual describes choosing an IPX Connection for a local-area network, or TCP/IP for network play, then selecting a game type such as Single Race or Battle Tag.
  • Nintendo Switch: Nintendo documents TV and tabletop multiplayer with detached Joy-Con controllers, and handheld local multiplayer with multiple Switch systems. Those are console capabilities, not confirmation that Re-Volt runs on the platform.
  • PlayStation: The available authoritative material does not establish a current official PlayStation Store release or a supported local-multiplayer configuration for Re-Volt.

That distinction matters because controller instructions, player limits and menu names from RVGL or the old PC manual cannot safely be presented as Switch or PlayStation instructions.

Before you buy a console copy, verify the edition

Search results, videos and marketplace listings can use “Re-Volt” for different releases, ports or emulated versions. A listing that shows the game’s name is not enough to establish local multiplayer. Confirm all of the following on the platform’s own current store page or the publisher’s documentation:

  1. The game is officially available for your exact system model and account region.
  2. The listing identifies whether the release is native, a backward-compatible version or an emulated classic.
  3. The feature list explicitly says how many players can play on one console.
  4. It distinguishes split screen from local wireless, LAN or online multiplayer.
  5. It specifies the controllers required and whether every player needs a separate system.
  6. It says whether computer opponents can be added to a local match.

If those details are absent, treat local multiplayer as unconfirmed. Do not infer support from Nintendo’s general controller documentation or from a PC version’s menu.

The documented way to play local multiplayer: RVGL on PC

RVGL is the actively documented PC path for Re-Volt-style local multiplayer. The project documentation states that it supports two to four player split-screen multiplayer. The exact appearance of menus can change between builds, so use the controller and multiplayer labels shown by the build you install rather than assuming that a console menu will look identical.

What you need

  • A PC with a current RVGL build obtained through the Re-Volt I/O project documentation.
  • Up to four controllers that the operating system recognizes. RVGL can only assign devices that the PC exposes to it.
  • A display large enough for the number of split-screen views you plan to use.
  • The game files and permissions required by the RVGL build you install.

The supplied documentation establishes the player count and controller workflow, but it does not specify a particular operating-system version, controller model, display resolution or performance requirement. Those details vary with the PC and RVGL build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install and launch RVGL

  1. Download and install a current RVGL build by following the Re-Volt I/O project documentation.
  2. Connect every controller before configuring the game. If a device is connected later, the operating system or RVGL may assign it differently, so keeping all devices connected from the start makes assignment easier to check.
  3. Launch RVGL and open its controller or input settings. Confirm that each connected device appears and that its buttons or axes produce input.

Do not substitute the original manual’s IPX terminology for this local split-screen procedure. IPX describes a network connection in the older PC release; it is not the name of a same-screen console mode.

Assign two to four human players

RVGL’s split-screen mode depends on assigning a separate input device to each human player. The documentation does not provide one universal keyboard shortcut or controller-brand-specific mapping, so follow the labels displayed in your build.

  1. Open the game’s controller or input configuration.
  2. Select the first player slot and assign the first controller’s steering, throttle, brake and other required actions.
  3. Select the next player slot and assign a different controller.
  4. Repeat until every human participant has a distinct device. For four people, verify four separate assignments before entering a race.
  5. Save or apply the configuration if the build presents an explicit confirmation button, then test each player’s steering and acceleration in the input screen or a practice launch.

If two players move the same on-screen car, both slots are using the same device or profile. Return to input settings, remove the duplicate assignment and bind each slot to a different recognized controller.

Start a local split-screen session

  1. Open RVGL’s multiplayer mode from the main menu.
  2. Choose the local split-screen option rather than a network or lobby workflow.
  3. Add the human player slots you configured. The documented limit is two to four players.
  4. Choose the available race settings, track and vehicle options presented by your build.
  5. Start the session and check that each player receives a separate section of the display.

The documentation supports the two-to-four-player split-screen capability, but it does not promise that every track, mod or custom vehicle behaves identically. If a custom add-on fails, reproduce the session with the standard content included by your build before troubleshooting the controllers.

Add computer opponents with Multiplayer CPU

RVGL includes a documented Multiplayer CPU option. Enable it in the multiplayer setup when you want computer-controlled racers alongside the human players. The available material confirms the setting exists but does not state a fixed number of CPU opponents or how the option is placed in every build’s menus.

Use the setting as an addition to the human-player setup, not as a way to exceed the documented four-player split-screen limit. The four-player statement refers to human split-screen participants; the documentation does not establish a combined maximum for humans and CPU racers.

Choose the game type: Single Race or Battle Tag

The original Re-Volt PC manual names two multiplayer choices:

  • Single Race: The manual describes this as “Begin a single race.” It is the conventional point-to-point competition on a selected track.
  • Battle Tag: The manual describes this as “Begin a game of Battle Tag.” It is a separate multiplayer mode rather than another network connection type.

These labels belong to the documented PC release. A console port, if one is officially confirmed in the future, could rename, remove or rearrange them; check that edition’s own manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network play is different from local split screen

The original PC manual’s connection choices are for players connected through a network, not for several people sharing one display. It identifies IPX Connection as the option to play over a local-area network and also refers to TCP/IP for network play.

“IPX Connection: Select this to play over a Local Area Network (LAN).” — Re-Volt PC manual

Use the documented lobby or IP workflow when players are on separate computers. Do not select a network connection when your goal is same-screen split screen on one PC. Conversely, plugging several controllers into one PC does not create an IPX or TCP/IP session; it uses RVGL’s local multiplayer mode.

What Nintendo Switch information does—and does not—prove

Nintendo’s support material describes three broad controller arrangements:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • TV mode: Detached Joy-Con controllers can be used for multiplayer when the game supports that arrangement.
  • Tabletop mode: Detached Joy-Con controllers can likewise support multiple players when the software allows it.
  • Handheld local multiplayer: Nintendo describes using multiple Switch systems for local multiplayer in compatible games.

These statements explain the hardware’s capabilities, not Re-Volt’s availability. They do not establish a Re-Volt Switch release, a player count, split-screen behavior, Joy-Con mapping or a requirement for multiple consoles. Until an official Re-Volt listing supplies those details, there is no reliable Switch menu path for adding a second controller.

If you already have a Switch listing

Open the exact product page from your region and read the “players” and multiplayer sections. Look for an explicit “same system” or “split screen” statement. “Local multiplayer” can mean local wireless between multiple consoles, which is not the same as two people playing on one television. Also check whether the product is a demo, a cloud version, a subscription entitlement or a separate release with different features.

What is known about PlayStation

The available authoritative material does not locate a current official PlayStation Store Re-Volt listing. As a result, it does not establish whether Re-Volt works on PS4 or PS5, whether an older disc is backward compatible, or whether any edition supports two to four players on one console.

Do not treat a used disc, an unverified download or a video of another platform as proof of PlayStation compatibility. A legitimate PlayStation setup guide would need to identify the exact product, supported console generation, controller requirements and local player count. Without those facts, a second-controller procedure would be speculation.

Troubleshoot the documented RVGL setup

A controller is not listed

  • Reconnect it before launching RVGL and confirm that the PC recognizes it.
  • Return to the game’s controller or input settings and check whether the device appears.
  • If it is still absent, test another recognized controller before changing game settings. The documented workflow assumes RVGL can see the device through the PC.

Two players control one car

  • Open the input assignments and inspect both player slots.
  • Ensure each slot points to a different controller.
  • Rebind steering and throttle separately, then test the inputs before starting the race.

The match starts without split-screen views

  • Confirm that you selected the local split-screen option, not a network or single-player mode.
  • Verify that at least two human player slots were added.
  • Restart the setup after saving input changes so the multiplayer screen reloads the assignments.

You expected online play

Use the network workflow described by the original manual and the lobby/IP process supplied with your RVGL build. IPX and TCP/IP are connection methods; they do not replace local split-screen configuration.

Can four people play locally?

Yes—on the documented RVGL PC path, the stated split-screen support is two to four players. Connect and assign four distinct controllers, select local split screen, add four human slots and then choose the race settings. The available documentation does not confirm a four-player same-console mode for Nintendo Switch or PlayStation, so that answer cannot be transferred to either console.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Want four people on one screen now? Use RVGL on a PC, where two-to-four-player split screen is documented.
  2. Want to use a Switch? Verify an official Re-Volt product page first, then confirm “same system” player count and split-screen support. Nintendo’s generic Joy-Con guidance is not sufficient.
  3. Want to use a PlayStation? Verify that an official listing exists for your console generation and region, then inspect its local-multiplayer specification.
  4. Want separate screens or PCs? Follow the RVGL/PC network workflow. The original manual calls the LAN option IPX Connection and also documents TCP/IP.
  5. Want AI competitors? On RVGL, look for the documented Multiplayer CPU setting. No equivalent console feature is established here.

Bottom line for Switch and PlayStation owners

The only fully documented local-multiplayer setup in the available material is RVGL on PC: connect recognized controllers, assign up to four human players, choose local split screen, select the race mode and optionally enable Multiplayer CPU. The original PC manual separately documents IPX/LAN and TCP/IP connections plus Single Race and Battle Tag.

Nintendo’s TV, tabletop and handheld multiplayer descriptions explain how Switch controllers can work in compatible software, but they do not confirm Re-Volt compatibility. A current official PlayStation release and its local player support are likewise not established. Until an authoritative store listing or manual supplies those facts, do not buy a console copy or accessories on the assumption that Re-Volt supports local multiplayer there.
