How do I set up Guided Access on an iPad for classroom activities?
Guided Access is built into iPadOS; no separate app is required. Apple describes it as a way to temporarily keep an iPad in one app. Follow these steps on the iPad students will use:

Open Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access, then turn on Guided Access. Menu labels may differ slightly by iPadOS version. See Apple’s Guided Access setup instructions.

Open Passcode Settings and tap Set Guided Access Passcode. You can also use Face ID on iPads with Face ID or Touch ID on other supported iPad models. Make sure the responsible adult knows how the session will be authenticated and can end it.

Review optional settings for time-limit sounds or spoken announcements, Accessibility Shortcut behavior, and Display Auto-Lock.

Open the app for the classroom activity. Triple-click the top button. If the Accessibility Shortcuts panel appears, choose Guided Access. On an older iPad with a Home button, triple-click Home.

On the Guided Access screen, circle any area students should not be able to tap. Move or resize the marked area to fit the screen.

Open Session Settings and select the controls appropriate for the activity. The available choices include Top Button, Volume Buttons, Motion, Software Keyboards, Touch, and Time Limit. Turning off Touch ignores all screen touches, so leave it enabled when students must interact with the app.

Tap Done, then Start. If Guided Access has saved settings for that app, review them before starting: they may reflect a previous activity rather than the restrictions you want now.
How do I lock an iPad to one app without blocking the activity?
Guided Access keeps the session in the app you launched, but its restrictions are adjustable. For an interactive lesson, leave Touch enabled and block only controls or screen regions students do not need. For a video or demonstration, you may want different settings, such as limiting buttons or setting a time limit.

Before handing over the iPad, test the session yourself: try the app’s required interactions, check that masked areas cannot be used, and confirm that the buttons and other controls behave as intended. Also test the exit flow so the supervising adult can return to the iPad’s other features when needed.
How do I stop students leaving an app on iPad?
Start Guided Access from inside the app students should use. Once the session is active, they are restricted to that app until an authorized person pauses or ends the session. To end it, triple-click the top button—or Home on an older iPad—and authenticate with the Guided Access passcode or configured Face ID or Touch ID. End the session when students need to switch apps or use other iPad features.

Guided Access is a manually started, single-app session. It is different from school-managed restrictions for testing. Apple documents assessment mode for compatible assessment apps and says device management can configure Single App Mode for unsupported test apps and some diagnostic, classroom, or formative assessment uses. Single App Mode forces the selected app to open and prevents switching to other apps. Schools should follow their IT process for managed devices. Apple notes that enabling Guided Access or Single App Mode supersedes assessment-mode restrictions; see Apple’s assessment deployment guidance.
What should I know about Auto-Lock during Guided Access?
Apple’s guidance describes an interaction between Guided Access and automatic locking: its display instructions say Guided Access disables Auto-Lock while active, while the Guided Access setup screen also offers a Display Auto-Lock session setting. Because the observed behavior may depend on the deployed iPadOS version, check it on the classroom iPad before relying on the display to lock at a particular time.
