To tell whether a Wi-Fi extender is working properly, check its router-link status, connect a device through it and confirm internet access, then compare performance with the router in the place where coverage is weak. A status light can show that the extender is connected; it cannot, by itself, show that the connection is useful where you need it.
1. Check the extender’s link to the router
Find the indicator described in your extender’s manual as the router, uplink, or signal link, or open its management page or app and check the connection status. Light names and meanings vary by model, so use the manual rather than a universal color chart.

For TP-Link models, the Signal light is the relevant check after setup: a solid light indicates a connection, while its color or bars can show the signal strength received from the router. NETGEAR’s guidance uses Router Link and Client Link indicators; on the models covered by that guidance, green or amber on both means the extender is working as expected. See TP-Link’s extender guidance and NETGEAR’s link-light guidance for model-specific details.
Do not assume the WPS or pairing light is a permanent operating-status indicator. TP-Link says some models keep the RE/WPS light on after setup while others turn it off after a short time. Check the post-setup Signal indicator or management status instead, following the instructions for your model.

2. Confirm that a device can get online through the extender
- Connect a phone or computer to the extender’s Wi-Fi network. If your model and setup support it, you can also test a client connected through the extender’s Ethernet port.
- Open a website or otherwise verify that the device has internet access. Check the extender’s management page as a second way to inspect router and internet status.
- If the device is connected to the extender but has no internet access, connect it directly to the router and check the extender’s router link before assuming the extender hardware has failed.
TP-Link states, “If your devices connected to the extender can access the Internet, your extender is successfully connected to your router.” That confirms the connection for the test; it does not guarantee good performance throughout the extended area.
3. Test whether it helps in the problem area
Use the same device in the same location to compare its connection through the extender with its connection directly to the router. Keep other high-bandwidth activity off during the comparison. Note whether you tested speed, whether pages load reliably, and which connection path you used.

A Wi-Fi icon, stronger signal display, or “connected” light does not prove that internet performance improved. TP-Link notes that the signal can appear stronger while download speed is slower. The result of a practical comparison depends on factors such as the internet service, router, client device, Wi-Fi band, walls, and interference; one speed test is not a performance guarantee.

Begin around halfway between the router and the weak-signal area, but keep the extender somewhere it can still receive a stable signal from the router. If its status shows a weak incoming link, move it closer to the router, then repeat the client and performance tests.

- Place it elevated, around router height where practical, rather than on the floor or in a corner.
- Keep it away from obstructions and potential interference sources. Walls, masonry, metal surfaces, mirrors, and some electronics can affect the signal.
- Use the extender’s actual link indicator and retest. A fixed distance is not reliable across different models, buildings, and layouts.
For additional placement guidance, see TP-Link’s extender placement recommendations. If distance or obstacles prevent a stable wireless link, a compatible extender may support access-point mode: connect it to the router with Ethernet and configure the mode as described in the model’s manual.

If only one device has trouble
Test that device directly on the router. If it works there, remove the saved extender network profile on the device and reconnect. A problem limited to one client points toward that client’s connection or saved network settings rather than proving the extender has failed.

If several devices have trouble
Check the extender’s router-link status, verify that the router itself has internet access, and confirm that the extender is in a position with a stable uplink. Restart or reconnect it according to its instructions. TP-Link cautions that an extender extends Wi-Fi but does not maintain the internet connection on its own.

If the fault persists
Before contacting the manufacturer, note the extender’s exact model and hardware revision, its firmware, the router model, the affected Wi-Fi band, and whether the problem occurs on one client or several. Those details help narrow down connection and compatibility issues.
