To pay with Google Wallet at a store, add an eligible card, turn on NFC, set Google Wallet as the default contactless payment app, and use a supported screen lock. Then unlock your Pixel and hold it near a contactless terminal. Card availability depends on your country, bank, and specific card.
Before you start
Google Wallet requires Android 9 or later, a Google Account, and current versions of Google Play Services and Google Wallet. A rooted phone or work profile is not supported for Wallet use. For in-store tap to pay, your Pixel also needs NFC, a supported screen lock, and software that meets Google’s security requirements.

Your bank and exact card must support Google Wallet in a country or region where contactless payments are available. A physical card’s contactless feature alone does not establish Wallet compatibility. Check Google’s supported payment methods and confirm eligibility with your card issuer.

The card issuer may require verification or decline the request to add the card. If the issuer declines it, contact the bank; Google cannot override that decision. Google says items previously added to Google Pay should appear in Wallet, but payment cards need tap-to-pay setup again after you move to a new phone.
Turn on NFC and choose Wallet as the default
-
Open your Pixel’s Settings app, search for NFC, and turn NFC on.
-
In Settings, search for NFC or Contactless payments, then open the matching settings page.
-
Tap Payment default and select Google Wallet. Confirm the choice if prompted.

Menu names and paths can vary. Google’s instructions may refer to the default app as “Google Pay”; select Google Wallet if that is the label shown on your Pixel.
Check your screen lock and setup status
Google requires a screen lock and identity verification for Wallet payments. Supported methods include a PIN, pattern, password, and supported Class 3 biometric unlock. Smart Unlock and Knock to Unlock do not qualify for payment verification. Google’s current help page says Face Unlock on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro is not supported for tap-to-pay transactions, so use another supported verification method on those phones.

Fix common setup and payment problems
-
“Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet”: Turn on NFC in Settings. If the Pixel still reports that it lacks NFC, check whether that specific device has NFC capability.
-
“Card not set up” or “Finish setup”: Complete the card’s verification flow in Wallet. If the issuer declines the card addition, contact the issuer.
-
“Card suspended”: Contact your bank or card issuer.

“Phone can’t be set up for tap and pay”: Check that NFC is on and that the phone meets Google’s security requirements. Google lists rooted devices, custom ROMs, unlocked bootloaders, and uncertified software among possible causes.
-
The terminal does not register the tap: Reposition the phone, hold it close and still for a few seconds, and confirm the merchant accepts contactless payments.
-
The payment is declined: Confirm the merchant accepts the payment method and contact the issuer if needed. Google says a declined transaction does not charge the card.
