To prevent food from sticking, preheat the grill, clean the hot grate, and lightly oil the food before grilling. Weber recommends a closed-lid preheat of at least 15 minutes in its general grilling guidance, while another support page says 15–20 minutes. Use your grill’s manual for the right procedure and temperature for your model.
Use this order before you grill
- Preheat the grill. Follow the preheating instructions in your grill’s manual. Weber’s general guidance recommends preheating with the lid closed for at least 15 minutes; a separate Weber support article recommends 15–20 minutes. - Brush the hot grate clean. Remove old food and residue before adding anything new; leftover bits can bind fresh food to the surface. Use a cleaning tool suited to your grate’s material and coating rather than assuming one brush works for every surface. (Weber Canada grilling basics)
- Check the brush. Look for loose bristles on the grate and brush, and replace the brush if you find any. (Weber brush-safety guidance)
- Lightly oil the food. Weber’s general grilling advice favors coating the food rather than the grate. The oil can help hold seasoning and reduce the chance of sticking; the guidance does not specify an oil type. (Weber Canada grilling basics)
- Remove excess marinade. Drain or remove as much liquid as practical before placing marinated food on the grate. Add barbecue sauce near the end of cooking; Weber’s grate-care guidance suggests the final 5–10 minutes. (Weber cast-iron grate care)
Choose the right heat for your grill and recipe
Weber’s cast-iron grate care guidance gives a 500–550°F preheating recommendation for that care context. Do not treat that figure as the target for every grate, grill, or recipe: the same manufacturer’s general guidance uses a preheat duration instead. If food still sticks
Consider whether the grate is new
Weber says food sticking more on a new grate is not unusual; use and cleaning can reduce the problem over time. Keep using the cleaning and preparation steps above, while following the care directions for your grate’s material. (Weber cast-iron grate care)

Use non-stick spray only if it suits the grate
Weber support suggests its non-stick spray if sticking continues after preheating. Treat that as an optional manufacturer suggestion, not a required step or a substitute for your grill’s instructions.
