To single-space text in Word, select the paragraphs you want to change and set Line and Paragraph Spacing to 1.0 in Word for the web, or choose Line Spacing and then 1.0 in the mobile app. Select all document text first if you want the change throughout the document. If a gap remains between paragraphs, adjust paragraph spacing separately.
Set single spacing in Word for the web
- Open the document for editing. If Word shows Viewing near Share in the upper-right corner, open that menu and switch to Editing.
- Select the text to change. Select the relevant paragraphs, or select all text in the document if you want single spacing everywhere. The Select All command or gesture depends on your device and context.
- Choose 1.0. On the Home tab, open Line and Paragraph Spacing and select 1.0.
The change applies to the selected paragraphs. To change a different section, select it and apply 1.0 separately.

Set single spacing in the Word mobile app
First select the text you want to format. To select the whole document, tap or press and hold in the document, then choose Select All from the command bar. Open the line-spacing control for your device and choose 1.0.

On each device, choose 1.0 from the available spacing options. Microsoft lists mobile line-spacing choices from 1.0 to 3.0. Its described iPhone and iPad app does not include special controls for spacing before or after paragraphs. Android includes options to add or remove paragraph spacing before or after; the available choices depend on the spacing already applied.

Why a gap can remain between paragraphs
Line spacing controls the distance between lines within a paragraph. Paragraph-before and paragraph-after spacing control the space around separate paragraphs, so setting line spacing to 1.0 does not necessarily remove a visible gap between them.
In Word for the web, open Layout > Paragraph and adjust the Before or After value to change that paragraph spacing. These controls change the space above or below paragraphs, not the line spacing itself.

Microsoft’s single-spacing guide also describes a document-wide Design > Paragraph Spacing > No Paragraph Space route. The menu options presented can vary in the web interface; selecting the text and setting 1.0 is the direct way to change line spacing.

No. Microsoft Support says, “Word for the web does not have a way to change the default.” It also says, “You can change the line spacing, but the next time you create a new document, Word for the web reverts back to 1.15 line spacing.” The 1.0 setting therefore applies to the text you format; it does not create a persistent web default for future documents.
