A strong startup accelerator application makes it easy to understand who has a problem, what your company is building, why your team can solve it, what evidence supports the opportunity, and what you plan to do next. Be specific, answer each prompt directly, and support claims with proof that matches your company’s stage. No application can guarantee acceptance, and criteria differ by accelerator.
Build a clear story before filling out the form
Write a short, consistent account of the company that you can adapt to the application, deck, and any requested videos. It should connect these points:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Customer and problem: Identify who experiences the problem and what makes it costly, urgent, frequent, or otherwise worth solving.
- Product: Explain what the company does in plain language. Separate what exists today from what you intend to build.
- Team: Show why these founders understand the problem and have relevant skills or experience to address it.
- Evidence: Describe what you have learned or accomplished so far, using concrete evidence rather than broad claims.
- Business and market: Explain who might pay, how the business could make money, what alternatives customers use, and why your approach has an advantage.
- Next milestones: State what the team intends to accomplish next and what it needs to learn or prove.
Make the company understandable on a quick read. Avoid generic startup language that could describe dozens of companies. Y Combinator’s application guidance similarly emphasizes clear, specific descriptions of what a company does and what is distinctive about its founders: How to Apply to Y Combinator.

Explain why this team can solve the problem
Describe each founder’s relevant abilities and experience, how the founders work together, and any direct connection they have to the customer or problem. Whenever possible, connect a founder’s background to something the team has already done: customer discovery, a prototype, a product launch, or another concrete step.
#1 Best Overall
Techstars says its selection order is “team, team, team, market, progress, idea.” That is Techstars’ stated approach, not a universal ranking used by all accelerators. Its guidance also asks why the founders are suited to solve the problem, whether they understand the market, and why the timing is right: Inside a Techstars Accelerator: What Are We Looking For? and How does Techstars choose which companies are accepted into program?.
If the team has a skill gap, state it honestly and explain how you are addressing it. Techstars advises applicants to be upfront about weaknesses rather than imply they know everything: Inside a Techstars Accelerator: The Application & Interview Process.
Describe the customer, market, product, and competition
Make the need concrete. Name the customer as specifically as the evidence allows, describe the problem in that customer’s terms, and explain how the product changes the situation. Avoid claiming there is no competition unless you can defend that. Customers may rely on existing products, manual work, internal tools, or simply tolerate the problem; explain the relevant alternatives and why a customer might choose your approach.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTechstars’ application preview asks about the problem, product, target audience, competitors, competitive advantage, timing, customer acquisition, and how the company may make money. Use those prompts as a reminder to address the whole business, not just the product idea: Techstars Accelerator Application Preview.
Show progress with evidence that fits your stage
Use real signals you can explain. Depending on the company, those might include a working prototype, product usage, customer conversations, signed pilots, revenue, retention, or another meaningful measure. Say what the evidence represents and avoid presenting a plan or forecast as if it were achieved traction.
- For an early idea: Explain what you have done to test the problem and what you learned from prospective customers.
- For a prototype or product: Show what works today and describe relevant usage or feedback accurately.
- For pilots or revenue: Clarify what is signed, active, paid, recurring, or still under discussion. Do not blur these categories.
- For projections: Label forecasts as projections and distinguish them from observed results.
Techstars recommends making progress on a prototype or product, showing that the founders have acted on their thinking, and using early traction or data points to test core assumptions. Its advice does not make any single metric mandatory: How does Techstars choose which companies are accepted into program?.

Answer the application prompts directly
Read the current form and respond to the question actually asked. Techstars’ preview covers the team, market, progress, and idea, and requests information about revenue and funding, customer acquisition, and upcoming milestones as well as product and customer details. It also requests a product demo video, pitch deck, and team introduction video. Requirements can change, so use the live application rather than an old checklist: Techstars Accelerator Application Preview.

- Use plain language and define unfamiliar terms when they are necessary.
- Make numbers and claims precise enough that a reader can tell what they refer to.
- Keep the written application, deck, and videos consistent; use each format to clarify the same story rather than add unsupported claims.
- Check that links open and contact details, especially the email address, are monitored.
Techstars specifically cautions applicants to respect character limits, answer the question, and use an email address they check often for updates.

Accelerators differ in geography, industry focus, stage expectations, schedule, application process, and support. Before applying, check the current program’s eligibility, time commitment, application requirements, and official terms. Compare financial terms and equity only using each program’s current official documentation; the details cannot be safely generalized across operators.
For Techstars specifically, applicants may be able to select programs or submit a general application, and Techstars says submitting multiple applications does not increase acceptance chances. Its programs vary by geography and industry focus. These are Techstars procedures, not rules for other accelerators: Techstars Accelerator Application Preview and Inside a Techstars Accelerator: The Application & Interview Process.
Prepare for an interview and a possible later application
Be ready to explain how the team works
Prepare to discuss what the company has accomplished, how long the founders have worked together, how they make decisions, and why they have an advantage in tackling the problem. Be ready to explain what you do not yet know and what you are doing to find out.
Treat Techstars’ timing as an estimate
Techstars describes first- and second-round interviews and says interview invitations may arrive one to four weeks after the deadline. That is a Techstars estimate published in its January 12, 2026 article, not a guaranteed schedule or a timing rule for other accelerators: Inside a Techstars Accelerator: The Application & Interview Process.
If rejected, make the next application materially stronger
Record any feedback and identify what has changed since the last application: the product, customer understanding, team, or validation. Techstars encourages applicants to apply again and says it values persistence and the ability to absorb and act on feedback. Reapplying is not a promise of acceptance: Inside a Techstars Accelerator: The Application & Interview Process.
