To use Google Sheets without internet, set up offline access while you are still online and mark the spreadsheets you need as available offline. On a computer, this requires Chrome or Edge and Google’s Docs Offline extension; on Android or iPhone/iPad, use the Google Sheets app (or Docs/Slides) to save recent files or individual spreadsheets. Offline edits are stored on your device and sync to Drive when you reconnect.
Before you go offline
- Connect to the internet before enabling offline access or saving a spreadsheet for offline use.
- Choose the specific spreadsheets you may need. Enabling offline access does not necessarily mean every file in Drive is ready, so explicitly mark important files.
- Make sure the device has enough available storage to keep the files locally.
Google’s Sheets access help describes offline access for Sheets. The setup steps below reflect Google’s help instructions reviewed October 5, 2026; menu labels may change.

Set up Google Sheets offline on a computer
On desktop, offline Sheets works through Google Drive in Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Do not use an Incognito or other private-browsing window. Google requires the Google Docs Offline extension to be installed and enabled, and the computer needs enough free storage for offline files.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- While online, open Google Drive in Chrome or Edge and install and enable the Google Docs Offline extension. If you use Edge, Google may direct you to the Chrome Web Store to install it.
- In Drive, select Settings > Settings, then turn on Offline.
- Locate the spreadsheet you need. Open it while online, or use its file menu and choose Available offline. From the Docs home screen, you can also select More > Available offline.
- Wait for the file to be made available, then check its status. A check mark indicates it is available offline; when the spreadsheet is open, inspect the status icon near the document title for readiness details.
Google says offline access may already be enabled on ChromeOS, when Docs and Drive sync was selected while creating a Chrome profile, or when Drive for desktop is installed. If you use a managed work or school account, an administrator may disable offline access. Only one account per browser profile can have offline access enabled; use separate Chrome or Edge profiles for separate accounts.

Edit offline and sync changes
Google Docs Editors Help says, “If you aren’t connected to the Internet, you can still create, view and edit files in: Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides.” Your offline changes are saved on the device and are saved to Drive after the device reconnects. In Sheets, move or tap outside the cell you are editing to commit that entry before closing the file.
If you want to create a spreadsheet while offline, do so in the Sheets app or an eligible desktop setup. Confirm it is saved locally and allow it to sync after reconnecting before relying on it in Drive from another device.

Fix common offline setup and sync problems
- Offline does not appear on a computer: Check that you are using Chrome or Edge rather than a private window, and that the Docs Offline extension is installed, enabled, and current.
- A spreadsheet will not open offline: Reconnect if possible, mark that specific file as available offline, allow time for it to download, and confirm the document status. Check that the device has sufficient free storage.
- Changes are not syncing: Check the network connection. Google recommends turning the file’s offline setting off and on again. If the file is too large to sync offline, make it smaller or copy smaller sections into new files.
- Your administrator disabled offline sync: Contact your organization’s administrator; a managed account may not permit offline access.
- Another account already uses offline access in this browser profile: Open the other account in a separate browser profile and enable offline access there.
