ChatGPT can help you explore entertainment beyond the titles you already know—but useful recommendations start with the details behind your taste. Name what you like about a favorite, add practical limits such as runtime or platform, and ask why each suggestion fits. The seven prompts below are adaptable examples, not verified quotations or a guarantee of good results.
How to get more useful recommendations
OpenAI recommends making prompts clear and specific, with enough context for the model to understand the request. Its guidance also recommends refining a prompt iteratively. In practice, that means describing what appeals to you about a film, artist, or game—not just listing a title—and adding constraints that matter to your choice.

For example, a movie request might include mood, approximate runtime, or content limits. For games, platform, preferred mechanics, difficulty, and session length may matter more. Ask for a short explanation of why each suggestion fits so you can judge the reasoning rather than receive an unexplained list. These details make a request more actionable; they do not guarantee that every recommendation will suit you.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT as capable of creative suggestions and using conversational context. Available features and tools can depend on your plan and settings. For current releases or availability, ask it to search the web when that feature is available, then verify details with the relevant provider or catalog.

Seven adaptable prompts to try
1. Find films similar to favorites
“I liked [two or three films] because of [specific qualities, such as atmosphere, pacing, humor, or visual style]. Recommend five movies with similar [qualities], but avoid [content or tropes]. For each, explain why it fits and where your information comes from.”
Specific qualities help distinguish what you want to repeat from what you merely happened to enjoy in a particular film. If the suggestions lean too heavily on genre or star, clarify which qualities matter most.
2. Choose a movie for a mood or occasion
“Suggest three movies for [occasion or mood], around [runtime] minutes, with [content constraints]. Give me one familiar, safer pick and two less obvious choices, and explain the trade-off.”

This is useful when the viewing situation matters as much as your usual taste. Replace “safer” with a concrete preference—such as lighter subject matter or a well-known crowd-pleaser—if you want a more precise distinction.
3. Discover music through sound and feeling
“I listen to [artists or tracks] for [voice, production, energy, lyrics, or instrumentation]. Recommend a short path into adjacent artists, starting with three tracks and explaining what connects each one.”
Asking for tracks gives you a manageable entry point instead of a long artist list. You can then say which track worked and what you noticed about it to steer the next suggestions.

4. Find an album, not just a playlist
“Recommend three albums for someone who likes [artists or albums] and wants [mood, genre blend, or era]. Say what distinguishes each album and suggest which track to sample first.”

5. Match games to how you play
“I enjoy [games] for [mechanics, story, co-op, challenge, or session length]. Recommend games for [platform, if relevant] that fit those qualities; flag multiplayer, accessibility, or difficulty considerations I should check.”

Include the platform when it limits your options, and describe the experience you want: a short solo session, cooperative play, a demanding challenge, or something story-focused. Treat availability and accessibility details as things to verify before choosing.
6. Ask for something outside your usual lane
“Give me three recommendations outside my usual [genre or category] that still connect to [favorite]. Explain the connection, and exclude [disliked elements].”

7. Refine recommendations through dialogue
“Here are the recommendations I have already seen, heard, or played: [list]. Ask me up to three questions about what I liked or disliked, then revise the list and explain what changed.”
Use the follow-up to identify a mismatch: perhaps the pacing was wrong, the difficulty too high, or the mood not what you wanted. OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends iterative refinement; giving specific feedback makes the next request clearer.

Use ChatGPT’s list as a set of leads, not as confirmation that a title is available, current, or suitable. Catalogs, regional access, ratings, platform support, and other practical details can change or vary. When any of those details matter, check the relevant streaming, music, game-store, or ratings provider directly. A suggestion’s explanation can help you decide whether to investigate it, but it is not proof that it matches your taste.
