Fingerprint sign-in works on a Ryzen AI mini PC only when Windows 11 can see a compatible fingerprint reader. Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, choose Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello), select Set up, and complete PIN verification and fingerprint enrollment. If the mini PC has no integrated sensor, connect a USB reader that explicitly supports Windows Hello.
The exact troubleshooting path depends on your Windows 11 release. Version 24H2 uses Enhanced sign-in security (ESS) controls for many external readers, while version 23H2 exposes a separate external-device toggle.

What you need before starting
Windows Hello fingerprint sign-in is a combination of hardware, drivers, Windows settings and, on newer releases, security compatibility. Check these items before attempting enrollment:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- A fingerprint reader: It may be built into the mini PC, commonly in a power button, or connected through USB. Microsoft Support says fingerprint sign-in requires the device to have a fingerprint reader.
- Windows 11: The menu names and external-reader controls differ between versions 23H2 and 24H2 or newer.
- A Windows account and PIN: Windows Hello uses a PIN during setup and as a fallback when biometric sign-in is unavailable. If no PIN exists, Windows will ask you to create one.
- A working driver or manufacturer package: An attached reader can remain invisible to Windows until its driver or setup software is installed.
- Permission to change sign-in settings: A work or school administrator can block external Windows Hello devices through policy.
Keep the reader connected directly to the mini PC while enrolling. If you are using a USB hub, move the reader to a built-in USB port during setup so that power or disconnect issues do not interrupt enrollment.

Check whether your Ryzen AI mini PC already has a reader
Look at the physical hardware
Inspect the power button and front or side panels for a small sensor surface. A fingerprint-enabled power button can look almost identical to an ordinary button, so the specification sheet is more reliable than appearance alone. Windows cannot offer fingerprint enrollment when the machine has no sensor.
Read the exact model specification
Do not assume that every Ryzen AI configuration in a product family includes the same security hardware. Verify the complete model number, memory and storage configuration, region and preinstalled Windows edition. A listing should explicitly say that fingerprint hardware supports Windows Hello.
For example, the manufacturer lists the MINISFORUM AI X1 Pro with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and “Fingerprint x1 (Support Windows Hello).” ASUS describes the ExpertCenter PN54, based on the Ryzen AI 7 350, as having a fingerprint reader for Windows Hello. These examples show that integrated readers exist on some Ryzen AI mini PCs; they do not establish that every unit or regional SKU has one.
Use a USB reader when there is no built-in sensor
Microsoft Support says a reader can be purchased and connected through USB when the device did not come with one. Choose a reader whose documentation specifically names Windows Hello, not merely “biometric” or “fingerprint.” After connecting it, install the manufacturer’s driver or setup package if supplied, restart Windows if requested, and then return to the sign-in settings page.

Set up fingerprint sign-in step by step
- Open the sign-in settings. Select Start > Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Find the fingerprint method. Under Ways to sign in, select Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello). Select Set up. If the entry is missing, stop here and follow the diagnostic section below rather than trying to enroll through an unrelated utility.
- Verify your identity. Enter your existing Windows Hello PIN when prompted. If you have not created one, choose the option to create a Windows Hello PIN and complete the account verification Windows requests.
- Place a finger on the sensor. Touch the reader, lift your finger, and repeat as the enrollment screen directs. Use the same finger you intend to use at the sign-in screen.
- Change the contact position. Windows will ask for additional touches from different parts of the fingertip. Roll or reposition the finger as requested instead of repeatedly pressing the exact same spot.
- Finish enrollment. When Windows reports that the fingerprint is ready, close the setup screen. If Windows offers an option to add another finger, use it for a second finger that you can comfortably use when the first is wet, injured or otherwise difficult to read.
- Test without removing the fallback. Lock the computer with Windows key + L. At the sign-in screen, select the fingerprint method if another method is shown, then touch the reader. Keep the PIN available because Windows can require it after a restart, after security changes or when biometric recognition is not accepted.
Microsoft says the next sign-in can use fingerprint identification instead of the account password. Enrollment does not remove the PIN or password; those methods remain important recovery options.
Make enrollment more reliable
- Clean and dry the sensor and fingertip. Moisture, dirt or residue can prevent a consistent scan.
- Keep the finger relaxed and centered, then follow Windows’ requests to use the edges and different angles of the fingertip.
- Do not unplug a USB reader while enrollment is in progress.
- If one finger is frequently unavailable because of the way you use the mini PC, enroll a second finger after the first enrollment succeeds.
- Finish Windows Update and the reader manufacturer’s driver installation before enrolling. A reader that appears briefly and then disappears usually needs a stable driver or USB connection.
Why Fingerprint recognition may be missing
1. There is no detected sensor
The most common explanation is simple: the mini PC does not include a reader, or a USB reader is not connected. Recheck the model specification, connect the reader directly, and reopen Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. A Ryzen AI processor does not itself provide fingerprint hardware; the sensor is a separate component.
2. The reader needs its driver or setup package
Install the driver supplied by the mini PC or reader manufacturer. If the package includes a setup utility, complete it and restart Windows. Then reconnect the reader, if necessary, and check the sign-in page again. If the manufacturer provides separate packages for different Windows releases or architectures, use the package that matches your Windows 11 installation and exact model.

On Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and expand Additional settings. Look for Enhanced sign-in security. Microsoft notes that some third-party fingerprint readers do not work while ESS is enabled. A reader designed to be ESS-compatible can continue to work, but an ordinary Windows Hello reader may need ESS disabled or replaced with compatible hardware.

ESS is not just a cosmetic setting. Microsoft Learn describes non-ESS Windows Hello peripherals as usable when ESS is off, while ESS depends on compatible hardware, firmware, drivers and the device’s current state. Before changing the setting on a managed computer, check with the administrator; a security policy may require ESS to remain enabled.
4. Windows 11 version 23H2 requires its external-device toggle
On Windows 11 version 23H2, Microsoft documents a control named Sign in with an external camera or fingerprint reader under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Additional settings. Turn on that control when you are using a USB fingerprint reader, then return to Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) and select Set up.
This control is specific to the 23H2 workflow described by Microsoft. Do not expect to see the identical toggle on every newer installation; 24H2 and later use the ESS-related controls instead.

5. The external-device option is not present
Microsoft says the missing toggle can mean that the computer does not meet ESS requirements or that an organization policy blocks external Windows Hello devices. On a work or school PC, contact the administrator rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers. On a personal PC, confirm the Windows version, install current manufacturer drivers, reconnect the reader and check the Additional settings section again.

6. The reader is connected but enrollment still fails
Test the reader on a direct USB port, remove unnecessary hubs or adapters, and restart Windows. Confirm that the manufacturer identifies the device as Windows Hello-compatible. If Windows sees a generic biometric device but the Windows Hello option remains unavailable, compatibility with the current ESS state, firmware or driver is more likely than a problem with your fingertip.
Enhanced sign-in security: what to choose
ESS creates a compatibility decision for external readers on newer Windows 11 builds:
| Situation | Practical action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in reader advertised as ESS-compatible | Leave ESS enabled and enroll normally. | Compatible hardware, firmware and drivers can continue to work with ESS. |
| USB reader does not work with ESS enabled | Check the manufacturer’s ESS support. If the reader is non-ESS, disable ESS only when your security policy allows it, or use a compatible reader. | Microsoft notes that some third-party readers are blocked while ESS is enabled. |
| Managed work or school computer | Ask the administrator whether external Windows Hello devices are allowed. | Organization policy can hide or disable the relevant controls. |
| Windows 11 23H2 external reader | Use the external-camera-or-fingerprint-reader toggle under Additional settings. | That release has a documented switch for external Windows Hello peripherals. |
Disabling ESS can broaden peripheral compatibility, but it changes the security posture selected by Windows. Treat it as a deliberate compatibility decision, not as a routine first step. Prefer an ESS-compatible reader when you want the newer protection and have a choice of hardware.
Built-in reader versus USB reader
| Consideration | Integrated reader | External USB reader |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware presence | Installed in the mini PC, often in or near the power button. | Added as a separate USB device. |
| Windows Hello support | Confirm that the exact configuration lists Windows Hello. | Choose a product whose documentation explicitly states Windows Hello support. |
| ESS compatibility | Verify whether the built-in component is ESS-compatible on Windows 11 24H2 or newer. | Check ESS support carefully; some third-party readers do not work with ESS enabled. |
| Drivers and policy | Usually tied to the mini PC’s driver package, but policy can still block it. | Requires a compatible driver and may be restricted by organization policy. |
| Convenience | No occupied USB port and nothing separate to carry. | Can add fingerprint sign-in to an existing mini PC and can be replaced independently. |
| Portability | Always travels with the mini PC. | Can be moved between compatible computers, subject to driver and policy support. |
The better choice depends on the machine you already own. Integrated hardware is tidier, while a USB reader is the practical upgrade when the Ryzen AI mini PC has no sensor.

What to verify when buying or configuring a reader
- Exact Windows Hello wording: Look for an explicit statement that the device supports Windows Hello fingerprint sign-in.
- ESS status: For Windows 11 24H2 or newer, determine whether the reader is ESS-compatible. If the documentation is silent, do not assume it will work with ESS enabled.
- Driver availability: Confirm that the manufacturer supplies a Windows 11 driver or setup package for the reader.
- Connection type: Make sure the mini PC has a suitable USB port and that the reader does not require a special adapter or hub.
- Management restrictions: If the mini PC belongs to an organization, verify that policy permits external Windows Hello devices.
- Model and region: Integrated-reader claims can vary by configuration and country. Match the specification to the exact unit being purchased.
Common sign-in problems after setup
Fingerprint works during setup but not at the lock screen
Lock the computer and check that the fingerprint icon is selected instead of password or PIN. If Windows has just restarted or applied a security change, use the PIN once and test fingerprint again afterward. Keep the reader connected if it is external.
Only one finger angle works
Remove the existing enrollment from the fingerprint settings and enroll again, following the prompts to cover the center and edges of the fingertip. Add a second finger if your normal hand position makes the first finger difficult to place consistently.
The reader disappears after sleep or reconnection
Reconnect it directly to the mini PC and restart Windows. Install the current manufacturer driver and avoid an unreliable hub. If the problem occurs only with ESS enabled, check ESS compatibility rather than repeatedly enrolling the same finger.

Return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, check Additional settings and verify the reader driver. On 24H2 or newer, review ESS; on 23H2, review the external-reader toggle. A policy change can also remove the option on a managed PC.
You forgot the PIN
Use the PIN recovery option shown on the Windows sign-in screen or in the Windows Hello PIN settings. Fingerprint enrollment does not replace the PIN, so recovery of that credential is necessary before biometric sign-in can be configured again.
A concise setup checklist
- Identify the exact Ryzen AI mini PC model and confirm whether a reader is integrated.
- If there is no sensor, connect a USB reader that explicitly supports Windows Hello.
- Install the manufacturer’s driver or setup package and restart if requested.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- On 23H2, enable Sign in with an external camera or fingerprint reader when using USB hardware.
- On 24H2 or newer, check Enhanced sign-in security and verify that the reader is ESS-compatible or that policy permits the required setting.
- Select Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello) > Set up.
- Verify or create the Windows Hello PIN, then touch the reader repeatedly from the positions Windows requests.
- Lock the mini PC and test fingerprint sign-in while keeping the PIN available as the fallback.
The decisive requirement is a compatible reader, not the Ryzen AI processor itself. Once Windows detects suitable hardware, the setup is handled in the standard Windows Hello sign-in page; when the option is missing, hardware detection, drivers, ESS compatibility and organization policy are the four areas to check.
