To share Apple Arcade, an adult first creates a Family Sharing group, keeps every person on a separate Apple Account, and subscribes to Apple Arcade or an Apple One plan that includes it. Family members then open the Apple Games app with their own accounts. To protect a child, the organizer or a parent/guardian opens Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Screen Time on the adult device and configures age ratings, time limits, purchase approval, communication, web, and Game Center controls.
Apple Arcade works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro, but a particular game can be unavailable because of country, region, hardware, software version, or game-specific support. Apple TV is the device most likely to require extra hardware: Apple says most Apple Arcade games there need a third-party Bluetooth game controller or another accessory sold separately.

What Family Sharing changes for Apple Arcade
Family Sharing links the Apple Accounts in one household without requiring anyone to share a password. The adult who creates the group is the organizer. Apple’s support documentation says a group can contain the organizer plus up to five additional family members. Each person signs in with their own Apple Account, so game progress, recommendations, achievements, and personal settings remain associated with the correct player.

Apple also documents Apple Arcade access through an Apple One subscription that includes the service. A family member does not need the organizer’s Apple Account credentials; they accept the invitation, sign in to their own account, and use the Apple Games app.

Family Sharing is an account and subscription arrangement, not a single shared profile. If a child is using the organizer’s account, Screen Time rules and game progress can be attributed to the wrong person, and the child may see the organizer’s private purchases or recommendations. Create or use a separate Apple Account for every member before handing over a device.
Check these requirements before setup
| Item | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Family group | An adult organizer has Family Sharing enabled and invitations can be sent. | Apple Arcade access is granted through the group rather than by sharing login details. |
| Apple Account | Every adult and child has a separate Apple Account and can sign in on their device. | Separate accounts keep progress, privacy, and restrictions tied to the right person. |
| Subscription | The organizer has an active standalone Apple Arcade subscription or an Apple One subscription that includes Apple Arcade. | Only an active, shareable subscription can provide the service to the group. |
| Device | The child’s iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Vision Pro meets the current software and hardware requirements for the title. | Apple Arcade availability can differ by device and by game. |
| Region | The Apple Account and device are in a country or region where the service and the selected game are offered. | Apple warns that country and regional availability varies. |
| Adult device | The organizer or parent/guardian can open Family settings and set a Screen Time passcode. | Child controls are managed from the adult’s device. |
Set up Family Sharing step by step
1. Start with the adult organizer
- On the adult’s iPhone or iPad, open the Family settings area in Settings.
- Follow the prompts to create the Family Sharing group and confirm the organizer’s Apple Account.
- Invite each family member. Use the person’s own Apple Account rather than creating a shared household login.
- Have each invitee accept the invitation on their own device and sign in with that account.
The labels and prompts can vary slightly by Apple operating system version, but the important result is the same: the organizer sees each member as a separate person in Family settings. Do not give a child the organizer’s password to make setup faster; that defeats account separation and can expose adult purchases and settings.
2. Confirm the child’s account is in the group
Before subscribing, open Family settings on the organizer’s device and check that the child appears as a member. If the child has not accepted the invitation, Apple Arcade access and Screen Time management may not appear for that account. Resolve the invitation first, then sign the child’s device in to the same Apple Account shown in the family group.

- From the organizer’s device, subscribe to Apple Arcade, or choose an Apple One plan that includes Apple Arcade.
- Complete the subscription confirmation using the organizer’s Apple Account.
- Allow the subscription status to update, then open the Apple Games app on the child’s device.
Apple says Family Sharing can provide Apple Arcade access to the organizer and the additional members in the group. The child should see the service while signed in to their own account; no second Apple Arcade subscription is required for that family member.
Verify device, software, and regional compatibility
Apple Arcade is available across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro. That broad device list does not mean every title runs everywhere. Apple states that availability varies according to country, region, hardware, software, and the individual game.

| Device context | What to check | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Current supported operating system, available storage, and the game’s own compatibility information. | Touch controls may be available, but controller support and requirements differ by title. |
| Mac | Supported macOS version and Mac hardware for the selected game. | A title available on iPhone or iPad is not automatically available on every Mac. |
| Apple TV | Supported tvOS version, the game’s listing, and a compatible Bluetooth controller when required. | Apple says most Apple Arcade games on Apple TV require a third-party Bluetooth game controller or another accessory sold separately. |
| Apple Vision Pro | Whether the title is offered for the device and supports its available input methods. | Availability is game-specific even though Apple Arcade is supported on the platform. |
When a game is selected, inspect its page before downloading. Apple shows a controller icon when controller support is available. The icon indicates support; it does not by itself mean that every game requires a controller. If the page or game instructions specify an accessory, plan for it before a child starts playing.
Open a child’s Screen Time controls from the adult device
With Family Sharing active, the organizer or a parent/guardian manages the child’s Apple Arcade environment from the adult device. Apple’s documented path is:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Settings.
- Tap Family.
- Select the child’s name.
- Tap Screen Time.
- Follow the prompts to turn on Screen Time for that child and create a Screen Time passcode on the adult’s device.
Keep the Screen Time passcode private. It is separate from the child’s Apple Account password and is intended to prevent the child from changing the limits you set. Apple allows these settings to be changed later, so start with rules that match the child’s age and routine and adjust them as circumstances change.
Choose age and content limits
App and game age ratings
Use the content-restriction controls to choose the highest app age rating the child may access. Apple Arcade games are delivered as apps, so an age-rating ceiling is the most direct way to prevent titles above the family’s chosen level from being downloaded or used. Set the rating deliberately rather than relying only on the Apple Arcade subscription label; the catalog contains games aimed at different ages.
Web-content restrictions
Screen Time includes web-content controls in addition to app ratings. Configure the web setting that fits the child’s independence and the family’s rules. This matters when the child can leave a game to browse from the same device, even though the web itself is not part of Apple Arcade.

- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Communication limits
Communication limits let you decide who the child can communicate with and when communication is allowed. Choose contacts and time windows that reflect the child’s age. These controls are separate from game access, so a child can have permission to play a title while still having restricted communication.

Game Center restrictions
Game Center controls govern social and multiplayer-related features associated with Apple’s gaming service. Review these settings if you want to limit adding friends, connecting with other players, or other Game Center interactions. The exact options shown can depend on the child’s account and operating system version.
Set time controls that match the child’s routine
Downtime for broad quiet hours
Downtime creates a scheduled period when most apps are unavailable. It is useful for school, meals, and bedtime because it applies across the device rather than only to one game. Set a schedule that reflects the child’s actual day and decide which essential apps should remain available.
App Limits for Apple Arcade play
App Limits can target a specific game or a category. Use a per-game limit when one title consistently takes too much time; use a category limit when you want to manage gaming as a whole. Category limits are easier to maintain as the catalog changes, while individual limits give finer control over a particular title.
Combining Downtime and App Limits
The two controls solve different problems. Downtime defines when recreational use is generally unavailable; an App Limit defines how much use is allowed before that schedule ends. If both are enabled, check the resulting schedule from the child’s Screen Time view so the rules do not accidentally permit late-night play or leave too little time for homework.

Control downloads and purchases with Ask to Buy
Turn on Ask to Buy for eligible downloads or purchases when the child should request approval. A request lets the organizer or designated parent/guardian review the item before it is downloaded or paid for. Apple documents Ask to Buy as one of the purchase controls available through Family Sharing and Screen Time.
Ask to Buy is an approval workflow, not a replacement for age ratings. Use the age-rating restriction to filter unsuitable apps, then use Ask to Buy when you also want to review otherwise eligible downloads or purchases. Explain to the child what happens after a request is sent so repeated prompts do not become a source of confusion.
Decide which control combination fits your child
| Family concern | Primary setting | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Games are too mature | App age-rating restriction | Set the highest rating that matches the child’s age and your family’s standards. |
| Play lasts too long | Downtime plus an App Limit | Use Downtime for fixed quiet hours and an App Limit for a daily allowance. |
| Unexpected downloads or charges | Ask to Buy and purchase restrictions | Require approval for eligible downloads or purchases before they complete. |
| Unwanted contact | Communication Limits | Restrict who can communicate with the child and when. |
| Unsupervised game networking | Game Center restrictions | Review social and multiplayer permissions separately from the game’s age rating. |
| Browsing concerns | Web-content restrictions | Apply a web policy to the whole device, not just to Apple Arcade titles. |
Apple TV: determine whether a controller is needed
Apple TV has a different input model from an iPhone or iPad. Apple’s Apple TV user guide says most Apple Arcade games require a third-party Bluetooth game controller or another accessory, sold separately, and that some games require one. Therefore, do not assume the Apple TV remote will operate every title.
- Open the game’s page before downloading and look for the controller icon.
- Read the game’s input requirements for Apple TV.
- If a controller is required or recommended, pair a compatible third-party Bluetooth game controller with the Apple TV before launching the game.
- Test the title with the child’s account. A controller that works with one game may not provide every feature in another.
On iPhone and iPad, the controller question is title-specific. Some games can be played with touch input, while others offer or require a controller. The game page is the authoritative place to check support for that title. On Mac and Apple Vision Pro, review the game’s own input information as well.
Test the setup using the child’s account
Do a short acceptance test before presenting Apple Arcade as ready. Testing with the adult account can hide a Family Sharing or Screen Time problem.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- On the child’s device, confirm that the signed-in Apple Account matches the member listed in Family settings.
- Open the Apple Games app, or the App Store where the game is listed.
- Confirm that Apple Arcade is available and that a permitted game can be downloaded.
- Try a title above the selected age rating, if appropriate for a controlled test, and verify that the restriction blocks it.
- Check that an App Limit or Downtime schedule appears as expected.
- If Ask to Buy is enabled, initiate an eligible download or purchase and confirm that the adult receives the approval request.
- On Apple TV, test the controller before the child begins a session.
Do not treat one successful download as proof that every game will work. Availability and input requirements can vary from title to title.
Troubleshoot missing Apple Arcade access
| Symptom | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| Apple Arcade does not appear for the child | Confirm the child accepted the Family Sharing invitation, is signed in with the listed Apple Account, and that the organizer’s subscription is active and shareable. |
| The organizer sees Arcade but the child does not | Open Family settings on the organizer’s device, verify the child’s membership, then sign out of the wrong Apple Account on the child’s device and sign in with the family member’s account. |
| A specific game is unavailable | Check the game’s device compatibility, current software requirement, country or region availability, and any title-specific limitations. |
| A game is blocked unexpectedly | Review the child’s app age rating, App Limits, Downtime, and Game Center restrictions. Change the relevant Screen Time setting from the adult device if the title is appropriate. |
| A download or purchase cannot proceed | Check whether Ask to Buy is waiting for adult approval and whether the item is eligible for that workflow. |
| Apple TV game will not respond | Check the game page for the controller icon and requirement, then pair a compatible third-party Bluetooth controller or other required accessory. |
| Controls can be changed by the child | Reset the Screen Time passcode from the adult device and choose a passcode the child cannot guess. |
Maintain the family setup
Review the arrangement after a major operating-system update, when the child receives a new device, or when the family changes region. Recheck the child’s Apple Account, Family Sharing membership, subscription status, and Screen Time settings instead of assuming they transferred perfectly.
Revisit limits as the child’s schedule and independence change. A limit that works during school holidays may be too permissive during term time, while a strict age rating may need adjustment as the child grows. Apple documents that Screen Time settings can be changed later, so treat the first configuration as a starting point rather than a permanent decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a new game, check three things before approving it: the age rating, the input requirement for the device, and whether its social features fit the communication and Game Center rules you selected. That short review prevents most surprises without requiring you to inspect every game in the catalog.
Setup checklist
- Family Sharing is created by an adult organizer.
- Each family member uses a separate Apple Account.
- The child has accepted the invitation and appears in Family settings.
- The organizer has an active Apple Arcade or qualifying Apple One subscription.
- The child’s device and selected games meet current hardware, software, and regional requirements.
- Screen Time is opened from Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Screen Time on the adult device.
- A private Screen Time passcode is set by the organizer or parent/guardian.
- Age ratings, Downtime, App Limits, web content, communication, and Game Center controls match the child.
- Ask to Buy is enabled when adult approval is wanted for eligible downloads or purchases.
- The child’s account is tested in Apple Games or the App Store.
- Any required Apple TV Bluetooth controller or accessory is paired and tested.
Bottom line
Family Sharing is the correct way to give a household access to one Apple Arcade subscription while keeping every player’s account separate. The adult organizer supplies the subscription; the parent or guardian supplies the guardrails through Screen Time. Set age and social permissions first, add time and purchase controls, then test with the child’s account. Check each game’s device and controller requirements, especially on Apple TV, because Apple Arcade availability is not identical across every title, device, software version, or region.
