The released video game is single-player: it has no multiplayer lobby, friend-invite button, matchmaking service, or supported way for two people to play one story campaign together. If you see a project claiming to add network play, it is an unofficial, version-dependent PC modification rather than a feature provided by CD PROJEKT RED.
This guide explains what the game supports, what REDmod does and does not do, how to assess an unofficial multiplayer experiment without confusing it with an official feature, and which legitimate cooperative Cyberpunk experience is available instead.

Cyberpunk 2077 has no official co-op or invite system
In the standard game, you start a save, select a character and play the campaign alone. The menus do not expose a party screen, lobby browser, matchmaking queue, friend list or invitation command. There is therefore no sequence of settings that can turn the story campaign into two-player mode.
The distinction matters because many searches for “Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer” mix together old announcements, fan projects and unrelated Cyberpunk products. The released video game itself remains a single-player title. A current REDnode project listing states: “Single-player only. Cyberpunk 2077 is a single-player game, and REDnode is for single-player modding.” You can read that project description on Nexus Mods.

- Explore all of Night City’s extremes — From V’s rise as a cyberpunk mercenary in Night City to their journey into the shadowy world of spies in Dogtown, dive into the full story and carve your own path through it.
- Meet unforgettable characters — Forge relationships with a rich cast of characters all with their own dreams, tragedies, and tales to tell, including Keanu Reeves as rockerboy Johnny Silverhand and Idris Elba as secret agent Solomon Reed.
- Explore one of the most immersive cities in video games — Experience a breathtaking city of the dark future at home or on the go with the power of Nintendo Switch 2! Customize your journey from the very first steps with performance and quality mode.
That statement also describes REDnode’s scope; it is not a promise of a supported multiplayer mode. Treat every network-play claim as an experiment maintained by a community project, not as a hidden setting in the game.
What happens when you look for an invite button
If you are following a normal campaign, nothing needs to be configured for co-op because no co-op session can be created. Opening the pause menu, the map, the character screen or the launcher will not reveal an official “Invite friends” action. Buying a different edition of the video game does not add one.
Friends can still participate around the game without entering the same save:

- Compare builds, quests and endings in separate saves.

These are social workarounds, not multiplayer functionality. They do not synchronize inventories, quests, characters or progress.
What REDmod is—and what it is not
CD PROJEKT RED distributes REDmod as a free downloadable modding tool. Its purpose is to add integrated support for installing and loading compatible community modifications. The official product is listed on Steam at Cyberpunk 2077 REDmod, and the publisher’s instructions are on its mod-support page.
REDmod is a framework for mod installation and loading; it is not a multiplayer server, account service or matchmaking layer. Installing it alone will not create a lobby or allow a friend to join your campaign. A separate community project would have to implement networking, synchronization and gameplay behavior, and that project would need to support your exact game build.

- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
The publisher also sets a clear support boundary: community mods are created by the community and are “not reviewed by CD PROJEKT RED.” CD PROJEKT RED does not create or maintain individual community projects and may be unable to support a game after it has been modified. A mod page’s instructions and issue tracker, rather than the game’s normal support channels, are the authority for that mod.

No single, publisher-supported installation path exists for multiplayer. Before downloading anything, establish whether the project is active and whether its technical requirements match your installation. A project can disappear, stop at an older patch or require dependencies that conflict with another mod.
1. Confirm the project’s current status
Read the project’s own page immediately before installing. Look for a recent update date, a statement of supported Cyberpunk 2077 build numbers, required dependencies, supported storefronts and a description of what “multiplayer” means. Some projects use the word for a prototype, shared world, limited test or demonstration rather than a complete co-op campaign.
Do not infer compatibility from a video uploaded months earlier. A major game update can change files, scripting interfaces or networking assumptions. If the page does not identify a supported build or gives no installation and removal instructions, you do not have enough information to expect a reliable setup.
2. Check your platform and game edition
REDmod-compatible community modding is intended for supported PC installations. Confirm the project’s exact requirements for your storefront and edition; do not assume that files made for one release work with another. Console editions should not be treated as interchangeable with PC mod installations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also check whether every participant must run the same game build, mod version and dependency set. Networked experiments commonly require matching files. If the project does not document this requirement, ask its maintainers before attempting to connect.

3. Install only the dependencies the project names
The official mod-support guidance points players toward Nexus Mods and Vortex for community-mod distribution. REDmod-compatible projects generally use the game’s mods folder and can be enabled through the launcher according to the publisher’s instructions. Follow the project’s own load order and dependency directions rather than copying files into arbitrary locations.
Keep a record of what you install. Save the project version, dependency versions and any launcher options in a text note. That record makes it possible to remove the experiment or reproduce the same setup on another PC.
4. Protect your unmodified game and saves
Back up important saves before changing files. Use a separate test save if the project’s maintainers recommend one, and avoid opening a valuable campaign with a large collection of experimental modifications. If a mod provides its own profile, launcher or executable, use the project’s documented method instead of inventing a shortcut.
A backup does not make an unsupported mod safe, but it gives you a recovery path if the game fails to start or a save behaves unexpectedly. Never overwrite your only copy of a campaign while troubleshooting.
5. Test locally before attempting a friend connection
Launch the game with the project enabled and verify that the base game reaches the main menu, loads a test save and performs the actions the project says should work. Record the exact error message if it fails. A local startup failure is a mod installation problem; it is not evidence that the game’s official servers are unavailable.
Only after the local test succeeds should you follow the project’s networking instructions. Those instructions may require a host process, a separate client, a port rule, an account, an invite code or a specific mission state. None of those steps are part of the standard Cyberpunk 2077 interface, so obtain them from the project’s maintainers rather than guessing.

6. Make every participant match
For a networked experiment, compare the game build, mod release, dependency releases, launcher settings and enabled load order on every PC. A mismatch can produce a connection failure, desynchronized characters or a crash. If the project documents a clean-install procedure, use it for all participants instead of trying to repair different existing mod collections.
Do not promise that a successful test will remain successful after the next game update. Pause automatic updates only if the project’s instructions explicitly explain how to do so and how to return to a supported build; otherwise, expect to re-check compatibility after each patch.
How to evaluate a claimed Cyberpunk multiplayer project
Use this checklist before spending time on an unofficial installation:
- Maintainer and status: Is there a clearly identified project page, changelog and current issue tracker?
- Build support: Does it name the exact Cyberpunk 2077 version it supports?
- Dependencies: Are required frameworks, loaders and other mods listed with compatible versions?
- Scope: Does it explain whether players can share a campaign, only explore a test map, or merely see one another?
- Connection method: Are host, client, authentication and firewall steps documented?
- Removal: Is there a clean uninstall or rollback procedure?
- Known limitations: Are quests, combat, vehicles, saves, inventories and progression described honestly?
- Safety: Are downloads hosted through a reputable mod platform, and are file names and checksums or release notes provided when appropriate?
A project that omits several of these details may still be an interesting prototype, but it should not be presented as a dependable co-op replacement. There is no authoritative published number for successful multiplayer installations or for how many working multiplayer mods exist, so percentages and player counts found in posts should not be treated as established facts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting an unofficial installation
The game will not launch
Disable the new project and test the unmodified game. If the base game starts, compare your files with the project’s required dependency list and supported build. Remove only the files the project identifies; deleting unrelated game data can create a second problem. If the publisher’s mod-support page does not cover the error, use the project’s issue tracker because CD PROJEKT RED does not maintain that community code.
The launcher starts, but the mod has no effect
Check that the project is compatible with REDmod, that its files are in the location specified by its instructions and that the launcher has enabled the mod. A REDmod installation by itself has no gameplay effect. Recheck load order and dependencies, then test with only the required files enabled.
Best Value
Friends cannot connect
Verify that everyone is on the same game build and project release. Confirm that the host and client are using the documented connection method and that a local test succeeds on each machine. If the project requires a port, invite code or separate host process, use the exact value and procedure supplied by its maintainers; the game’s normal friend list cannot substitute for it.
The game crashes after an update
Assume that the update may have invalidated the project until its maintainers confirm support. Disable the project, restore your backup if necessary and check the project page for a compatible release. Do not copy an older multiplayer file set into a newer game build merely because the filenames look familiar.
You want to return to normal play
Follow the project’s uninstall directions, disable REDmod-compatible content through the documented launcher process and verify the base game before loading an important save. Keep your original backup untouched. If the project has no removal instructions, treat that absence as a warning and seek clarification from its maintainers.

Standard game, unofficial mod and board game compared
| Option | Official support | Platform and purchase | Multiplayer function | Setup and stability | What you are playing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077 campaign | Official single-player release | Video game; edition and platform availability vary | No lobby, invite flow or co-op campaign | Normal game setup; no mod dependencies | The Cyberpunk 2077 video game, played solo |
| Unofficial PC multiplayer project | Not reviewed or maintained by CD PROJEKT RED | Requires a compatible PC installation; project-specific requirements and any separate purchase are not stated universally | Depends entirely on the individual project; scope is not standardized | Requires exact game build, dependencies and project instructions; stability is version-dependent | A community modification of the video game |
| Cyberpunk 2077: The Board Game | Official Cyberpunk franchise product | Separate physical game; retailer, region and release details vary | Designed as a cooperative tabletop experience | Uses board-game rules and components, not video-game mod files | A separate cooperative, story-driven tactical action board game |
A legitimate cooperative Cyberpunk experience
If your priority is an actual cooperative campaign rather than modifying the video game, the official franchise site describes Cyberpunk 2077: The Board Game as a “cooperative, story-driven tactical action board game.” The page describes a campaign of more than 40 hours and a replayable Afterlife mode. It is a separate physical product: it does not add co-op to the video game, transfer video-game saves or use the Cyberpunk 2077 PC launcher.
Read the product description on the official Cyberpunk 2077 franchise page and verify retailer, region and release information before buying. Choose this route when the requirement is cooperative play with people at the same table, not shared access to the video-game campaign.
Does the Ultimate Edition unlock multiplayer?
No. The publisher’s Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition announcement says that the edition contains the base game and Phantom Liberty and that a physical copy is available in selected markets. Those contents do not add a lobby, invite button or co-op campaign. Purchase an edition for its included game content, not for multiplayer access.
The practical answer for your group
For the released video game, there is no co-op setup and no friend-invite action to follow. Play separate campaigns or share a stream if you want to experience the story together. If you experiment with a PC multiplayer project, treat it as unsupported community software: verify the exact build, dependencies, platform requirements and current maintainer instructions for every participant, back up saves and expect compatibility to change. For a supported cooperative Cyberpunk product, use the separate board game rather than expecting REDmod or a game edition to retrofit network play.
