How to Set Up Child-Friendly Parental Controls for Bluey Games on Nintendo Switch

To make a Nintendo Switch child-friendly for Bluey: The Videogame, configure two separate systems: console parental controls for games, communication, sharing and play time; and Nintendo Account family settings for Nintendo eShop visibility and spending. Start at System Settings > Parental Controls > Set Up Parental Controls, choose an age preset or Custom Settings, then test the child profile with the parent PIN. Bluey: The Videogame is rated E for Everyone by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), so a profile that allows Everyone-rated software should permit it, but the rating does not change chat, social-media, time-limit or purchase settings.

What you are configuring

Nintendo Switch parental controls are not one master switch. A child can be allowed to play an age-appropriate game while still being unable to communicate with other players, post captures, exceed a daily schedule or buy content. Treat the setup as three related layers:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Console software controls: an age-rating limit can restrict games and other software according to the rating organization selected for your country.
  • Activity controls: the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls mobile app can impose daily play-time limits and show gameplay history. It can also exempt an individually selected game after a parent has reviewed it.
  • Account and eShop controls: Nintendo Account family settings determine what a child or supervised account can see and purchase in the Nintendo eShop. These settings are separate from the console’s software restriction.

This separation matters for Bluey. Allowing Everyone-rated software may let the game launch, but it does not automatically make online interaction safe, prevent screenshots from being posted, set a bedtime or block purchases.

Before you start

Have the following ready:

  • The Nintendo Switch and the child’s user profile.
  • Access to the parent or family Nintendo Account used to manage the child or supervised account.
  • A phone or tablet if you want schedules, gameplay-history reports or per-game exceptions through the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. You can complete the initial setup directly on the console instead.
  • A parent PIN that the child does not know. Keep it available for testing and for legitimate changes, but do not enter it in front of a child who should not learn it.
  • Your country’s applicable software-rating organization. Nintendo’s age setting uses the rating organization selected for the console’s region, so the labels and age bands may differ from those shown in another country.

Do not assume that a Bluey title sold in another region has identical menus, ratings or online functions. Rating records and menu wording can change with software, console and account updates.

Set the basic restriction on the Switch

Nintendo documents the following starting path. If your software version uses slightly different wording, choose the equivalent on-screen option rather than abandoning the setup.

  1. From the Switch HOME menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Parental Controls.
  3. Select Set Up Parental Controls.
  4. When prompted, choose whether to continue on the console or link the setup with the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls mobile app. The app is optional for the initial restriction.
  5. Choose an age-level preset for a quick configuration, or select Custom Settings when you need separate decisions for software, communication and social sharing.
  6. For Restricted Software, select the child’s permitted age level using the rating organization appropriate to your country. A young-child profile normally uses the lowest suitable level that still permits the software you have approved.
  7. Leave In-Game Communication with Others restricted for a young child unless you have reviewed the particular game and decided that communication is appropriate. Nintendo documents both a general setting and an adjustment for individual software.
  8. Turn on the restriction for Posting Screenshots/Videos to Social Media if the child should not publish captures from the console.
  9. Complete the PIN setup. The PIN is the control that prevents casual changes to the restrictions, so choose one that is not easy to guess.

These settings apply at the console level and can affect every user or software title covered by the selected controls. They do not replace supervision inside a game that has its own communication or account features.

Use the mobile app for schedules and activity history

The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app adds controls that are not practical to manage only from the console. After linking the app to the Switch and the parent account, configure the child’s routine rather than relying on a single unrestricted daily total.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install and open the official Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on the parent’s smart device.
  2. Sign in with the Nintendo Account used to manage the family group, then follow the app’s linking instructions for the Switch.
  3. Set a daily play-time limit that fits the child’s age and your household schedule. If the console offers a bedtime or end-time option in your version, use it to prevent play from continuing late at night.
  4. Review gameplay history periodically. The history can show whether the child is spending time in Bluey, another title or an unexpected application.
  5. Use the app’s individually selected-game exemption only after you have intentionally reviewed that title. An exemption is an override for that game; it is not a substitute for checking the game’s communication, sharing and account behavior.
  6. After saving the schedule, let the child use the profile normally and check that the limit is enforced. Keep the parent PIN and the phone account private.

A time limit governs use of the console, while a software-rating limit governs which software can be started. Changing one does not silently change the other.

Restrict communication and social sharing separately

Communication with other players

For a young child, keep In-Game Communication with Others restricted by default. The setting is a documented console control, but it cannot promise to block every possible communication method in every game. Individual software can have its own online features, accounts or communication systems, so review those features before relaxing the restriction.

If you later decide that a particular title is suitable for communication, make the change deliberately and check whether Nintendo provides a per-software adjustment in your version. Explain to the child what information must never be shared, such as a full name, address, school, phone number or password.

Screenshots and video posts

Enable the restriction for Posting Screenshots/Videos to Social Media when the child should not publish captures. This prevents the console’s social-posting pathway, but it does not control a separate phone camera, another account or a service operated outside Nintendo. Treat it as one boundary in a broader privacy rule.

Block eShop visibility and spending in Nintendo Account settings

Game restrictions and purchases are administered in different places. ESRB parent guidance explains that Nintendo Account family controls determine what child or supervised accounts can see and purchase in the Nintendo eShop. Configure this even when the console restriction already allows Bluey.

  1. Sign in to the parent Nintendo Account that manages the family group.
  2. Open the family or supervised-account settings for the child’s account.
  3. Enable the available eShop content and spending restrictions. Nintendo describes these controls as including the ability to restrict spending or limit the visibility of Nintendo eShop content based on age.
  4. Check which account is used for purchases and whether a payment method is available to it. A restriction on the child account does not necessarily remove purchasing ability from an adult account that remains signed in.
  5. Save the settings, then test the child account’s eShop view without entering the parent PIN or approving a transaction. Confirm that the visible content and purchase prompts match your family rule.

Because eShop rules are account-based, adding a different user to the same Switch, changing the active Nintendo Account or creating a new supervised account can produce different results. Recheck the account identity whenever a child reports that a title or purchase option is unexpectedly visible.

How Bluey: The Videogame fits the age setting

The ESRB record lists Bluey: The Videogame as E for Everyone and lists Nintendo Switch as a supported platform. Consequently, a restriction that allows Everyone-rated software should allow that title to run. If you are referring to another Bluey game, verify its own rating and platform listing; the E rating cited here applies to Bluey: The Videogame, not automatically to every Bluey-branded release.

The E classification answers only the age-rating question. It does not configure:

  • Communication with other players.
  • Posting screenshots or videos to social media.
  • Daily play time or gameplay-history reporting.
  • Nintendo eShop visibility, spending or approval of purchases.

Set each of those controls according to your child and household, then test the finished profile rather than assuming that the game’s rating has done the work for you.

Choose a configuration by risk and independence

The following comparison keeps the five decisions separate: permitted rating, communication, social posting, scheduled play and eShop access. It is a decision aid, not a replacement for reviewing the child’s age, maturity and the particular software.

Control Strict young-child profile Balanced family profile More independent profile
Permitted software Lowest suitable age level; allow E-rated software such as Bluey: The Videogame only when it meets the family rule Age level selected for the child; review exceptions individually Higher age level only when the parent has reviewed the software and accepts the trade-off
Communication Restricted globally Restricted globally, with a carefully reviewed per-software adjustment if needed Allowed only after discussing the specific game, contacts and privacy rules
Social-media posting Restricted Restricted unless the child has a supervised sharing routine May be allowed with a clear rule about what can be posted and where
Play schedule Short daily limit and a firm end time in the mobile app A daily limit matched to homework, sleep and family activities A less restrictive schedule with regular gameplay-history checks
eShop Restrict age-based visibility and spending on the child or supervised account Restrict spending; review each requested purchase Permit only what the parent has intentionally approved, with account-level monitoring

The balanced profile is often a practical starting point: it allows an age-appropriate game while leaving communication, social posting and spending closed until you have a reason to open them.

Test the child profile before handing over the console

Testing catches account and region mistakes that a settings screen can hide. Use the child’s profile, not the parent profile, for each check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Launch Bluey: The Videogame. If it starts under the selected age limit, the software restriction is functioning for that profile.
  2. Open the Switch’s relevant communication or sharing pathway and confirm that a restricted action asks for the parent PIN or is unavailable, according to your console’s wording.
  3. Check the eShop while signed in as the child or supervised account. Verify that age-limited content and purchase actions follow the Nintendo Account family settings.
  4. Use the mobile app to confirm that the console is linked, the daily limit is saved and gameplay history is reporting the expected activity.
  5. Leave the console for a full limit cycle if practical, or use the app’s status view to confirm that the schedule is being applied.
  6. Write down which parent account manages the settings and where the PIN is stored. This avoids creating a second, conflicting setup later.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Bluey is blocked even though it is rated E

  • Confirm that the selected restriction is based on the rating organization used in your region and that its permitted level includes Everyone-rated software.
  • Check that you are testing the child profile covered by the restriction, not a different user.
  • Look for an accidentally selected Custom Settings value that is stricter than the intended preset.
  • Check for a console or game update and follow the wording shown by the current software version.
  • If the title is a different Bluey release, verify that release’s own rating rather than applying the rating of Bluey: The Videogame.

The game launches, but communication is unavailable

That is expected when In-Game Communication with Others is restricted. Decide whether the child actually needs communication in that specific title. If you change the setting, review the game’s own features and explain the privacy rules first.

The child can still see or buy eShop content

The console’s software restriction does not replace Nintendo Account eShop controls. Reopen the family settings, verify the exact child or supervised account, check the account currently active on the Switch and test again without the parent PIN. An adult account on the same console can retain its own purchasing access.

Play-time limits do not appear to work

Confirm that the Switch is linked to the correct mobile-app account and that the limit was saved for the intended console and profile. Review gameplay history to see whether activity is being recorded under another user. Menu names and app behavior can change with updates, so use the current on-screen instructions.

Social posts are still possible elsewhere

The Nintendo restriction covers the console’s documented screenshot and video posting control. It cannot govern a separate device, another account or an external service. Add a household rule covering phones, tablets and any account the child can access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust the setup as your child grows

Parental controls work best as a review process rather than a one-time lock. Revisit the configuration when the child starts a new school year, gains access to a new account, asks for online communication or begins using another Bluey title. Review the software rating, communication need, social-sharing expectation, daily schedule and eShop permissions as five separate decisions.

When you approve an individually selected game through the mobile app, record why it was approved and whether the approval should remain after an update or a change in the child’s account. Remove exceptions that are no longer needed. Keep the parent PIN private and test after significant console, app or account updates because labels, rating behavior and eShop availability can vary by country and software version.

A practical child-friendly baseline

  • Allow software at the child’s selected age level; this includes Bluey: The Videogame when Everyone-rated software is permitted.
  • Keep communication with other players restricted until a parent has reviewed the exact title and family situation.
  • Restrict posting screenshots and videos to social media for a young child.
  • Use the mobile app for a daily limit and gameplay-history checks.
  • Use Nintendo Account family settings to control eShop visibility and spending separately.
  • Test the child profile with the parent PIN available, then repeat the test after meaningful updates or account changes.
