You can set up an automatic Messenger greeting for a Facebook Page in Meta Business Suite. From the Page, open Inbox, select Automations, choose Instant reply, enable Messenger, write your message, and save it. Meta describes this feature as a greeting shown when someone begins a conversation with the Page for the first time, before that person sends any messages.
The documented workflow is for a Facebook Page, not a personal Messenger account. The steps below follow Meta’s computer-help instructions and explain what the greeting does, how to write a useful response, how to check the setup, and what the official instructions do not establish.

What you are setting up
Meta calls the feature Instant reply. It is a customized greeting for a Facebook Page. When a person starts a conversation with the Page for the first time, the greeting can appear in Facebook messages and in the Messenger app for iPhone, iPad, and Android, before any messages are sent. See Meta’s Help Centre instructions for creating an automated Messenger greeting.

This is narrower than a general-purpose bot or a reply that fires after every incoming message. Meta’s cited help article establishes the first-conversation greeting only. It does not establish that the message is sent on every subsequent message, nor does it explain how Instant reply interacts with away messages, FAQs, or other automation types.
#1 Best Overall
- Build relationships at work and home. Messenger and WhatsApp put you just one tap away from friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can always be heard.
- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
- Bigger screen, bigger sound. A brilliant 14” HD tilting display and a room-filling stereo speaker means you’ll never miss a detail.
- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the integrated camera cover.
Page and personal-account scope
| Account type | What Meta’s documented instructions cover | Where the setup lives |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Page | A first-conversation Messenger greeting called Instant reply | Meta Business Suite → Inbox → Automations → Instant reply |
| Personal Messenger account | The cited Meta article does not provide a personal-account auto-reply workflow | No personal-account path is documented in that article |
If you need an automated welcome message for a business, organization, creator brand, or community, make sure you are administering the Page that should receive the conversations. Selecting your personal profile instead of the Page is the most important scope mistake to avoid.
Before you begin
- Have Facebook login access that can switch into the relevant Page.
- Use a computer for the documented procedure. Meta labels the source “Computer help.”
- Know the exact greeting you want to publish, including your expected response window and the best next step for the visitor.
- Decide whether Messenger is the only channel you want to configure in this control. The documented setup specifically requires selecting Messenger.
Menu wording can change as Meta updates Business Suite. If your screen is arranged differently, use Inbox and its automation controls as the navigation anchors, then consult Meta’s current Help Centre page.
How to turn on an automatic Messenger reply
-
Sign in and switch to the correct Page
Log in to Facebook. Open the profile menu, choose See all profiles, and select the Facebook Page that should send the greeting. Business Suite settings apply to the Page currently selected, so check the Page name before changing anything.

Open Meta Business Suite
With the Page selected, open Meta Business Suite from Facebook’s left-hand menu. This is the workspace Meta uses for the Page’s inbox and automation controls.
-
Go to Inbox
In Business Suite, select Inbox. This is where Page conversations and their related response settings are managed.
-
Open Automations
Inside Inbox, select Automations. Do not look for the setting in a personal Messenger conversation; the documented control is in the Page’s Business Suite inbox.
-
Choose Instant reply
Select Instant reply. This is the automation Meta documents for the customized greeting that appears when someone starts a Page conversation for the first time.

What the visitor will see
Meta characterizes Instant reply as a greeting shown when someone begins a conversation with the Page for the first time. It can appear in Facebook messages and in Messenger on iPhone, iPad, and Android, and it appears before the person sends any messages. That timing makes the message useful for orientation: it can explain what the Page handles and what the visitor should do next.

Do not promise customers that this setting will answer every incoming message or continue a conversation automatically. The official description does not make either claim. If a visitor has already started a Page conversation, the cited instructions do not say whether that person will see the greeting again.
How to write a useful greeting
The automation only helps if the first message sets an accurate expectation. A good greeting is short enough to read in Messenger, specific enough to prevent confusion, and honest about what happens next.

Writing checklist
- Say who the Page represents.
- State what information will help the team respond.
- Point to the next action, such as describing the issue or including an order number.
- Use a response-time statement only when it is accurate and maintained.
- Avoid saying that a person has read the message unless that is known.
- Do not describe the greeting as a complete answer to every future message.
Check the setup after saving
A short verification routine can catch Page-selection and channel mistakes before visitors encounter them.
- Confirm that the Page name shown in Facebook and Business Suite is the Page you intended to configure.
- Return to Inbox → Automations → Instant reply and check that the control is enabled.
- Confirm that Messenger is selected as the channel.
- Read the saved message for spelling, links or contact details you included, privacy wording, and any response-time statement.
- Use a separate account or ask a colleague who has not previously started a conversation with the Page to begin a test conversation. The goal is to observe the documented first-conversation greeting without relying on an existing thread.
- Record the date of the test and the exact message shown. This gives your team a reference if the greeting later appears different.
The last check is a practical test recommendation, not a promise about Meta’s delivery timing. The official description establishes when the greeting is intended to appear, but it does not specify a guaranteed delivery delay or a testing method.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Page is not listed under See all profiles
Return to Facebook’s profile menu and confirm that you are using an account with access to the Page. If you remain in your personal profile, Business Suite will not be operating on the Page you want to configure. Once the correct Page appears, switch into it before opening Business Suite.
You cannot find Automations
Start from the Page’s Meta Business Suite → Inbox, not from a personal Messenger window. Meta can change menu placement, so look for automation controls within Inbox. The documented path is Inbox → Automations → Instant reply.
Messenger is not selected
Open Instant reply and check the channel selector. The procedure requires choosing Messenger. If another channel is selected, the setting is not configured according to the Messenger workflow described by Meta.
The message did not appear in a test conversation
First confirm that the test account is beginning a conversation with the correct Page for the first time. Meta’s description is limited to that first-conversation condition. Also verify that Instant reply is enabled, Messenger is selected, and the text was saved. The help article does not establish behavior for an existing thread or explain how this greeting interacts with other Page automations.

The screen looks different from these steps
Meta labels the source as computer help and notes no mobile-app-specific procedure in the cited material. Use the Page’s Inbox automation controls as the anchor, then follow the current labels shown by Meta. Avoid assuming that a personal Messenger app setting is equivalent to the Page setting.
You want to stop the greeting
Open the same Inbox → Automations → Instant reply control for the Page and switch the feature off, then save the change if Meta presents a save button. Recheck the control after saving so the Page is not left with an unintended greeting.
Mobile setup: what is and is not documented
The greeting itself can appear in Messenger on iPhone, iPad, and Android when someone begins a Page conversation. However, Meta’s cited instructions are specifically labeled computer help and do not provide steps for configuring Instant reply from a mobile app.
If you are trying to make the change from a phone, do not infer a mobile workflow from the fact that visitors can receive the greeting in the Messenger app. Use the computer-based Business Suite path documented by Meta, or consult the current Help Centre for any later interface changes.
Personal Messenger accounts versus Facebook Pages
A personal Messenger account and a Facebook Page are different administration contexts. The documented setup starts by selecting a Page through See all profiles, then moves into that Page’s Business Suite Inbox. Meta’s cited article does not document automatic replies for a personal account.
Consequently, these instructions should not be presented as a way to create an auto-reply on an individual profile. If your goal is to greet customers, use the Page that represents the business or organization and verify that you have the required Page access.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limits of the documented feature
- Trigger: Meta describes the greeting for a person beginning a conversation with the Page for the first time.
- Channel: The setup requires selecting Messenger.
- Timing: The greeting appears before the person sends any messages, according to Meta’s description.
- Conversation coverage: The source does not establish that the greeting fires on every incoming message or repeatedly in an existing thread.
- Interaction with other automations: The source does not explain how Instant reply works alongside away messages, FAQs, or other automation types.
- Configuration device: The supplied procedure is for a computer; no mobile setup steps are provided.
Keeping these boundaries in mind prevents the greeting from being sold internally as a full customer-service system. It is a first-contact message that helps orient a new Page conversation.
