Microsoft’s PowerToys 0.95 announcement describes custom start and end times or a sunrise-and-sunset schedule based on the user’s location. It also offers an adjustable offset, choices for whether the Windows shell, apps, or both change, and an optional keyboard shortcut for toggling on demand.

PowerToys is a free, open-source collection of Windows utilities, according to Microsoft’s PowerToys overview. Light Switch was introduced in version 0.95, so its controls and availability should be checked in the installed version rather than assumed from older screenshots or instructions.

How to set up automatic appearance switching
Microsoft’s release announcement documents Light Switch’s options, but does not establish the exact labels or navigation in every current release. Use the live PowerToys settings rather than relying on a fixed menu path:

Choose whether the change applies to the Windows shell, apps, or both. Set an offset if you want the switch to happen earlier or later than the selected schedule.

How its behavior compares with macOS Auto
Apple documents Auto appearance in Mac Appearance settings. On a Mac, Auto follows the Night Shift schedule; if no Night Shift schedule is set, it uses sunrise and sunset. Apple also says the Mac waits until it has been idle for at least one minute before switching.

The common ground is automatic switching between light and dark appearance. The scheduling relationship and documented controls differ, so macOS Auto is a useful parallel, not an exact match.

What changed after Light Switch launched
Microsoft’s PowerToys 0.99 announcement says Light Switch can also switch Power Display profiles automatically. Power Display provides controls for supported external monitors, including brightness, contrast, volume, input source, and color profile. This extends the schedule’s reach beyond appearance, but applies to supported monitors and does not mean every display supports every control.

Microsoft’s current PowerToys overview lists many utilities, but Light Switch is not listed in the overview excerpt. That alone does not establish whether it is available in every current build. Check the installed app and current release information for its present status and setting names.
