There is no single consensus pick for the best VPN for Mac in 2026: reviewers rank different services first, and the right choice depends on whether you prioritize privacy, extra tools, a simple app, or streaming. This guide compares four options without treating third-party tests as personal testing or implying that a VPN makes you anonymous.
How these four Mac VPN picks are organized
RTINGS names Mullvad its best tested Mac VPN and Proton VPN its feature-rich alternative. Top10VPN’s Mac guide, last tested in September 2026, ranks ExpressVPN first and includes NordVPN among its premium picks. TechRadar also compares these providers using hands-on testing. Those rankings are not directly interchangeable: reviewers use different methods, and the available information does not establish one shared test environment or scoring system.

The evidence supports Mullvad for a privacy-focused shortlist, Proton VPN for a broader feature set, ExpressVPN as a beginner-oriented option according to TechRadar, and NordVPN as another premium contender. Reviewers’ test results and provider descriptions are attributed where relevant; they are not independent tests conducted for this article.

Which Mac VPN should you choose?
Mullvad: a privacy-focused shortlist
RTINGS selects Mullvad as its best tested Mac VPN. It reports that the app requires macOS 13 Ventura or later, includes a functional kill switch, and uses an account number instead of an email-and-password login. RTINGS also describes its pricing as flat-rate. These are reviewer-reported details, not guarantees about every current app build or account configuration. Check RTINGS’ guide and Mullvad’s current requirements before installing it on an older Mac.
An account number rather than an email login can reduce the personal information needed to open an account, but it does not make browsing anonymous. Your VPN provider can still process connection and account data under its own policies, and websites can identify users through logins, cookies, browser fingerprints, and other signals.
Proton VPN: a broader feature set
RTINGS recommends Proton VPN for people who want more features than its top pick. Its guide describes a paid option with up to 10 simultaneous devices and features including port forwarding, obfuscation, ad blocking, and Secure Core. Treat that device figure as specific to the plan RTINGS describes, not a timeless limit for every subscription.

That is a reason to read the underlying privacy statements and audit coverage, not to reduce the question to a blanket “no logs” label. Current free and paid terms should be confirmed with RTINGS’ Mac guide and the provider before relying on a particular feature.
ExpressVPN: a beginner-oriented option
TechRadar describes ExpressVPN’s Mac app as beginner-friendly and reports multiple protocols, a kill switch, support across several macOS versions, and measured speed and streaming performance. Top10VPN ranks it first in its Mac guide, which it says was last tested in September 2026. These are the publications’ evaluations, not a guarantee that the app will feel easiest for every user or that a streaming service will work from every location.

NordVPN: a premium alternative
Top10VPN includes NordVPN among its premium Mac picks. TechRadar covers its protocols, kill switch, streaming tests, and privacy audits, but results and plan features can change. For any claim that matters to your decision, inspect the review’s test date and the provider’s current macOS app and plan details.
NordVPN says Artifact Security’s June 2026 test awarded it an overall score of 91 and the only Platinum rating among five providers tested. Check the Mac app edition before you install
A provider may offer both a Mac App Store app and a direct-download version from its website. Top10VPN reports that App Store editions of ExpressVPN and NordVPN omit some settings available in their direct-download counterparts, with omissions varying by provider. Top10VPN attributes limitations to Mac App Store sandboxing, which can constrain system-level access used by VPN apps.

Before installing, compare the current feature list for the exact app you intend to use. Check whether it includes the kill-switch behavior or other controls you need, and verify the supported macOS version. - macOS compatibility: Match the provider’s current minimum version to the macOS release on your Mac. RTINGS reports macOS 13 Ventura or later for Mullvad’s app; that floor should not be applied to the other services.
- Privacy policy and audit scope: Look at what data is collected and what an audit actually examined. A published audit does not establish that every app version, server, or policy statement was covered.
- Kill switch and leak protection: Treat these as separate behaviors to verify. A kill switch is intended to block traffic if the VPN connection drops; do not assume a feature label proves every failure case is covered.
- Performance evidence: Compare tests only when their server locations, protocols, baseline connections, and dates are relevant to your situation. One reviewer’s speed result is not a universal speed promise.
- Price and renewal terms: Check current introductory and recurring charges, billing period, cancellation rules, and the plan’s device limit on the provider’s checkout and terms pages. The cited reviews do not provide a complete, comparable set of those values for all four services.
- Streaming expectations: Reviews report test outcomes, not guaranteed access. Catalog availability can change, and services may block VPN traffic.
Free VPN options for Mac
If you need a free plan rather than a paid subscription, RTINGS names Windscribe Free its best tested free Mac option and describes a monthly data allowance of 2 GB for signup with only a username, increasing to 10 GB if an email is added. Those figures are RTINGS’ account of plan terms accessed in 2026, not permanent allowances; check the current RTINGS guide and provider terms.

RTINGS names Proton VPN Free its best unlimited-data Mac option, while noting that the free tier does not let users choose a server location and does not support torrenting. “Unlimited data” therefore does not mean unrestricted choice or identical features to a paid plan. Confirm current free-tier rules before choosing it for a particular activity.

A VPN is not the same as anonymity
A VPN routes network traffic through a provider’s servers and can change the public IP address that a destination sees. It does not prevent websites from recognizing an account you log into, erase tracking already present in a browser, or protect a Mac from malware by itself. The provider becomes an important party in the connection, so its data practices, technical protections, and audit coverage matter.
Apple’s iCloud Private Relay is a separate privacy feature, not an interchangeable full VPN service. Check Apple’s current explanation of iCloud Private Relay if that feature appears in your Mac’s settings.
