Turn on Back Up This iPhone at Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. After that, your iPhone can back up automatically each day when it is connected to power, joined to Wi‑Fi, and locked. Use Back Up Now once to test the setup and confirm the completion time.

What automatic iCloud backup actually does

Automatic iCloud Backup creates a current copy of your iPhone’s backup data in Apple’s cloud without requiring you to connect to a computer. The feature is enabled by a single switch, but the daily process is conditional: Apple says an iPhone backs up automatically each day when it is connected to power, locked, and connected to Wi‑Fi. Those conditions are the trigger, not a user-selectable appointment at a particular hour.

In practical terms, you normally enable the switch, charge the phone overnight or during another regular charging period, leave it on a trusted Wi‑Fi network, and allow the screen to lock. Apple does not publish an exact clock time that users can choose for the daily run in its current guidance. If the phone was unplugged, disconnected from Wi‑Fi, or left unlocked during the relevant period, the backup may wait until all three conditions are satisfied.

The instructions below use the current iPhone labels documented by Apple. Apple’s Support guidance was published September 24, 2026, and the matching iPhone User Guide wording is current for iOS 26.

Turn on daily iCloud backups

Open the iCloud Backup control

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap [your name] at the top of the screen. This is the Apple Account profile area; older iOS versions may display a slightly different account name.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Tap iCloud Backup.

Enable the switch

Turn on Back Up This iPhone. If the switch is already on, automatic backup is enabled and you can move directly to the verification step. If you do not see an iCloud Backup option, make sure you are signed in to an Apple Account and that you are following the account section under your name rather than a separate app’s settings.

Meet the three daily conditions

After enabling the switch, leave the iPhone in this state:

  • Connected to a power source: Plug the phone into a charger or another compatible power source using a cable and wall adapter that match your iPhone. Apple’s instructions do not require a particular cable brand or wattage for this feature.
  • Connected to Wi‑Fi: The phone must remain joined to a Wi‑Fi network under Apple’s normal documented procedure.
  • Locked: Press the side button or allow Auto-Lock to turn the screen off. A locked screen is part of the automatic trigger.

Apple’s exact description is: “iCloud automatically backs up your iPhone daily when iPhone is connected to power, locked, and connected to Wi‑Fi.” This means turning on the switch alone does not force an immediate upload; it authorizes the daily process once the operating conditions are met.

Run a first backup and check the timestamp

The fastest way to test the setup is to start a manual backup. Stay on Wi‑Fi until it finishes.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap [your name].
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Tap iCloud Backup.
  5. Tap Back Up Now.
  6. Keep the iPhone connected to Wi‑Fi while the progress completes.

When the operation is complete, the date and time of the last completed backup appear beneath Back Up Now. That timestamp is the clearest confirmation that iCloud has a usable completed copy. A progress indicator or a button that is still running is not the same as a finished backup; wait for the last-backup time to update.

A manual backup is useful even if you intend to rely on the nightly process. It confirms that the account can reach iCloud, that there is enough available storage for the selected data, and that the phone can communicate with Apple’s service from the current network. Once the timestamp changes to the current test, you can leave the phone on its normal charging and Wi‑Fi routine for future automatic runs.

Why a backup may not have run overnight

Do not assume that an unchanged date means the feature is permanently broken. Check the trigger conditions and the status message in iCloud Backup in this order.

Anker USB C to USB C Cable, 60W Fast Charging Cable (2-Pack, 6 ft, Black) | For iPhone 18 / 17 Series, iPad mini 6, and More
  • Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
  • Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger
  • Versatile Compatibility: Works with virtually all USB-C devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops
  • High-Speed Data Transfer: Transfer files quickly with 480Mbps data transfer speeds
  • Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup

1. Check the power connection

Automatic iCloud backup requires the iPhone to be connected to power. A loose connector, a failed wall outlet, a depleted power bank, or a cable that only works intermittently can leave the phone charging too briefly for the process to start. Reconnect the cable firmly at both ends and verify that the iPhone shows it is charging. A compatible iPhone charging cable and wall adapter are sufficient; Apple does not specify a required manufacturer or wattage for this setting.

If you charge through a dock, car adapter, computer port, or multi-device hub, confirm that the accessory actually supplies power for the period when the phone is meant to back up. The requirement is an active power source, not merely having the cable inserted.

2. Confirm Wi‑Fi is still connected

Open Settings > Wi‑Fi and check that the iPhone is joined to a network. If the network requires a sign-in page, has dropped the connection, or is out of range where you charge, the normal automatic route cannot complete. Rejoin the network, then leave the phone connected to power and locked long enough for a new attempt.

Apple’s standard instructions use Wi‑Fi as the network requirement. A cellular connection should not be treated as an interchangeable default unless your iPhone and carrier expose the separate cellular-backup option described later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Make sure the screen is locked

The automatic trigger includes a locked iPhone. After plugging in and joining Wi‑Fi, press the side button to lock the device. If you are watching the Backup screen or repeatedly waking the phone, allow it to return to the lock screen before expecting the daily process to begin.

4. Read the iCloud status message

Return to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. The page can identify a storage problem or show the date of the most recent completed copy. Use that message rather than guessing from the phone’s battery icon or from the fact that it was plugged in.

Fix an “insufficient iCloud storage” warning

iCloud Backup cannot complete when the account does not have enough available iCloud storage for the backup it is trying to create. If iOS reports insufficient space, follow the onscreen option to buy more iCloud storage, or reduce the amount included in the backup.

Review the size and included apps

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap [your name].
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Tap iCloud Backup.
  5. Tap [This iPhone].

That device-specific screen shows the last backup, the next backup size, and the apps included in the backup. Use the next-backup estimate to decide whether the account has enough room before trying another manual run.

Reduce the backup deliberately

On the same device screen, turn off apps whose data you do not need in the iCloud backup. This reduces the backup size, but it also deletes that app’s existing backup data from iCloud. Treat the switch as a data-retention decision, not merely a space-saving toggle: anything removed from the iCloud backup will not be available from that backup if you later restore the iPhone.

After changing the included apps, check the estimated next backup size again and tap Back Up Now. Keep the phone on Wi‑Fi until the new operation finishes, then verify that the last-backup timestamp has changed.

Buy additional iCloud storage when you need all selected data

If you do not want to exclude apps, use the onscreen storage-upgrade path presented by iCloud. The exact plan choices and prices can vary by country and can change over time, so rely on the options shown in your Apple Account rather than an old price list. The relevant decision is whether you want to preserve the current backup selection or reduce it to fit the available space.

Can an iPhone back up over cellular data?

Some supported 5G iPhone models and carrier plans can expose Back Up Over Cellular at Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup. This is a conditional exception, not the normal documented route. Availability depends on the iPhone hardware and the carrier, so the option may not appear on your device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the switch is present and you choose to use it, check your carrier’s data allowance and terms before relying on cellular backup. Wi‑Fi remains Apple’s standard instruction for automatic daily backups. When troubleshooting a missing backup, first restore the ordinary combination of power, Wi‑Fi, and a locked screen; only then investigate whether a supported cellular option is available.

How to interpret the last-backup date

The date and time displayed below Back Up Now represent the last completed backup, not the moment the feature was enabled and not the time an attempt began. If the value has not changed, the latest run did not finish successfully or has not yet been triggered under the required conditions.

There is no Apple setting for choosing “2 a.m.” or another exact daily clock time in the cited guidance. The practical schedule is therefore condition-based. For example, if you normally charge at 11 p.m., connect to Wi‑Fi at home, and lock the phone, that charging period is when an automatic attempt is likely to occur. If you travel and the phone remains on cellular data, or if it is not connected to power, the run may be delayed until the conditions return.

Use a manual Back Up Now after a major change, before handing the phone to a technician, or whenever you need a known current timestamp. A successful manual run does not disable daily automation; it simply creates a new completed backup and resets the displayed last-backup time.

Daily iCloud backup versus a computer backup

iCloud is convenient because it can create a cloud copy without a recurring cable connection to a computer. A computer backup is an alternative route documented by Apple: on a Mac, use Finder; on Windows, use iTunes. The better arrangement depends on where you have access, how much iCloud storage is available, and whether you want a second local copy.

Consideration iCloud Backup Computer backup
How it runs Automatic daily operation when the iPhone is powered, locked, and on Wi‑Fi; a manual Back Up Now command is also available. Requires access to the computer and the Apple backup workflow; Apple documents Finder for Mac and iTunes for Windows.
Where the copy is kept In the iCloud account associated with the iPhone. On the selected Mac or Windows computer.
Convenience Hands-off after setup, provided the three trigger conditions are met. Useful when you want a local copy but requires deliberate computer access.
Storage concern Limited by available iCloud storage; the iCloud Backup screen reports the next backup size and lets you exclude apps. Limited by free storage on the computer rather than the iCloud allocation.
Best reason to choose it You want a routine cloud copy that can run without remembering a cable-to-computer session. You want an additional local copy or do not have enough iCloud space for the selected backup.

These approaches are not mutually exclusive. A person who wants resilience can keep automatic iCloud backups enabled and also make occasional computer backups. The iCloud setting itself does not require a Mac or Windows PC.

A practical setup checklist

  • Account: You are signed in under Settings > [your name].
  • Toggle: Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up This iPhone is on.
  • Power: A compatible cable and power adapter are connected and actually supplying power.
  • Network: The iPhone is joined to Wi‑Fi and remains within reliable range.
  • Lock state: The screen is locked during the charging period.
  • Storage: The iCloud Backup device screen has enough available space for the next backup.
  • Proof: A manual Back Up Now run completes and updates the displayed date and time.

If every item is satisfied but the timestamp still does not change, return to the iCloud Backup page and read the exact warning shown there. A storage alert requires storage action; a network or power interruption requires restoring the missing condition and retrying.

Common situations and the right response

You turned on the switch but expected an instant backup

Enabling Back Up This iPhone turns on automation; it does not guarantee an immediate upload. For an immediate copy, tap Back Up Now, remain on Wi‑Fi, and wait for the timestamp to update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone was charging but the date is still old

Charging alone is not enough. Verify Wi‑Fi and lock the screen. A phone that was plugged in but disconnected from Wi‑Fi, or that remained in active use, did not meet the complete trigger described by Apple.

The backup worked manually but not overnight

This usually points to a missing overnight condition rather than a disabled feature. Check whether the charging cable stayed connected, whether the home Wi‑Fi network remained available, and whether the iPhone was locked. The successful manual run demonstrates that the account and current backup selection can complete under suitable conditions.

The next backup is larger than the available space

Open the [This iPhone] screen under iCloud Backup, review the next-backup estimate and included apps, then either exclude selected apps or use the onscreen option to obtain more iCloud storage. Remember that excluding an app removes its existing backup data from iCloud.

You cannot find “Back Up Over Cellular”

That option is conditional on a supported 5G iPhone and carrier. Its absence is not an error in the standard Wi‑Fi setup. Use Wi‑Fi, power, and a locked screen for the normal automatic process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do before relying on the backup

After the first successful manual run, record mentally—or check whenever needed—the timestamp shown under Back Up Now. Keep the iPhone’s regular charging location within dependable Wi‑Fi range. If you change routers, travel, replace a cable, or receive a storage warning, revisit the iCloud Backup screen rather than assuming the old schedule continues unchanged.

For a new iPhone or a device with important recent data, perform the manual test before deleting or erasing anything from the old device. The completion timestamp is the evidence available in the settings screen that the latest requested backup finished. If the timestamp remains old, resolve the displayed power, network, lock-state, or storage issue first.

The essential answer

Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and turn on Back Up This iPhone. Daily automation depends on the iPhone being connected to power, connected to Wi‑Fi, and locked. Tap Back Up Now for an immediate test, stay on Wi‑Fi until it completes, and use the displayed date and time to verify success. If iCloud says there is not enough storage, reduce the included apps or follow the onscreen option to buy more space.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
