To set up an Activity Zone on an Arlo Pro 6, open the Arlo Secure app, tap Devices, select the camera, tap its settings gear, then choose Zones > Activity > +. Drag the zone’s anchor points around the area that matters, such as a walkway or doorway, and save it if the app shows a Save control. To reduce false alerts, first keep irrelevant movement out of the camera’s view or zone, then test and adjust motion sensitivity. These changes can reduce unwanted events, but no single setting guarantees that every false alert will stop.
What an Activity Zone changes—and what it does not
An Activity Zone tells the camera which part of its view should count for zone-based motion handling. For a front-door camera, for example, you might include the path to the door while excluding the road beyond it. This can help keep irrelevant activity out of the Feed and alert workflow, but it is not a universal recording boundary.

Arlo’s support article, “What are activity zones and how do I create them?”, describes an Activity Zone as focusing motion detection on a specific area within the camera’s field of view. Arlo also says that only part of an object needs to enter the zone for it to be detected. A zone that looks tightly drawn around a driveway may therefore still count a vehicle or person that clips its edge.
There is an important storage exception: Arlo says Local Storage saves all videos regardless of whether the activity is inside an Activity Zone. Do not rely on a zone to prevent off-zone local recordings.

It helps to separate three outcomes that can otherwise sound like the same thing: motion detection, a recording appearing in the Feed, and a push notification arriving on your phone. An Activity Zone focuses motion-related handling on part of the picture; notification filters can change which alerts you receive; and local storage has its own exception. If you want fewer interruptions but still want useful clips, changing notification settings may be a better first move than making motion detection less sensitive.
Set up an Activity Zone on the Pro 6
- Open the Arlo Secure app and tap Devices.
- Select your Pro 6 camera, then tap its device-settings gear.
- Tap Zones, choose Activity, and tap +.
- Drag the zone’s anchor points to shape and size it. To move the zone as a whole, drag inside its shape.
- Place it over the route or area where activity matters. For example, include the walkway to a door rather than the entire front yard if street traffic or landscaping is producing unwanted events.
- Tap Save if that control appears in your version of the app before leaving the zone editor.
The number of zones and anchor points can vary by camera model. Arlo’s available documentation does not establish a Pro 6-specific Activity Zone count, so use the controls shown in your app rather than assuming a limit from another camera model. App labels or available controls may also vary with software and device configuration.
For a useful first zone, start with the smallest area that still covers the activity you need to see. A doorway camera might need the approach to the door and the threshold, not the whole yard. A camera watching a gate might need the gate and the short path leading to it, not the street on the other side. Keep enough of the approach inside the boundary that someone entering the scene is not detected only after reaching the edge of what you care about.
After drawing the shape, look at the full frame and ask what can cross its boundary. A person or vehicle does not need to be fully inside the zone; part of an object entering can be enough to trigger detection. Leave a little space between the zone edge and a road, waving branch, or flag if those sources have been causing events. At the same time, do not trim the zone so narrowly that the approach to the door is excluded.
Reduce false alerts in the right order
Changing sensitivity first can make the camera less responsive to both unwanted and wanted motion. A more targeted sequence is to remove avoidable sources from the view, refine the zone, and only then tune sensitivity.
1. Remove irrelevant movement from the field of view
If the camera can be aimed away from a busy street, waving vegetation, or another source of irrelevant motion, do that before relying on sensitivity changes. Arlo recommends a secure mount and advises avoiding wind-prone mounting locations, direct sun, rapidly changing temperatures, and swaying or heat-trapping vegetation, which can contribute to unwanted triggers. A camera’s physical view determines what it can observe; a zone can narrow what counts, but cannot make an awkward angle ideal.
Check the mount as well as the framing. A wind-prone or insecure mounting location can undermine a carefully drawn zone if the camera shifts or vibrates. Look at the picture at the time of day when the unwanted events tend to happen: direct sun or quickly changing temperatures may contribute to triggers that are not obvious in a still image. If vegetation is the culprit, trimming or excluding the moving area may be more effective than repeatedly lowering sensitivity for the entire scene.

2. Tighten the zone around the activity that matters
Include the approach, entrance, or other specific area you need to monitor, and leave roads, tree branches, flags, or other irrelevant movement outside the shape where possible. Since part of an object entering the zone may be enough for detection, check the boundary as well as the center. If cars at the edge of a road still trigger events, move that boundary farther from the road or change the camera angle if practical.
Make one deliberate adjustment at a time. If you both move the camera and redraw a zone, it will be harder to tell which change helped. Start by excluding the clearest irrelevant area. Then observe whether the unwanted event continues and whether the important route is still covered. A zone is most useful when it corresponds to a real place where meaningful activity happens, rather than being a large, approximate box over everything in view.
3. Use Motion Detection Test to find a starting point
- In the app, tap Devices, select the camera, and open Default Mode Settings.
- Choose Motion Detection Test and begin with the slider at Low.
- Walk in front of the camera from roughly 5–10 feet away, then raise the slider until the camera LED indicates detection.
The 5–10-foot distance is a step in Arlo’s test procedure, not a published performance measure or a guarantee about detection range. Arlo specifically notes that the test does not save a new motion-detection setting.
That last point matters: the test is a way to find a starting threshold, not a shortcut that commits a new setting. Once you have completed the test, return to the regular setting and set the Motion Detection slider yourself. If you leave the test believing that its result was saved, the camera may still be using the prior sensitivity level.

Return to Default Mode Settings and move the Motion Detection slider to the level you want. If unwanted events continue, try lowering it incrementally; if meaningful movement is missed, raise it again. A lower level can reduce some triggers but may also make less prominent movement harder to detect. The useful setting depends on the camera’s position and the movement in your scene, so verify it with actual activity rather than treating the test threshold as a universal recommendation.
When checking a change, test the movement you want to keep, not just the nuisance event you want to suppress. For example, if the camera is meant to cover a walkway, walk through that route and confirm that the camera still detects it after lowering sensitivity. Then check the Feed and notifications separately. A quieter alert stream does not necessarily mean that recording behavior changed, and a missing notification does not by itself prove that a desired event was not recorded.
5. Disable Auto Zoom & Tracking while configuring zones
Arlo says Auto Zoom & Tracking can affect Activity Zone accuracy and advises disabling it while setting up zones. If the camera has zoomed or repositioned its view, review the zone afterward. A zone is drawn against a particular framing; changing the camera position, angle, or zoom can make its boundaries no longer match the area you meant to cover.

Think of the zone as attached to the view you drew it on, not as a permanent description of the property. If you re-aim the camera to get a better view of a doorway, check the zone rather than assuming it still encloses the same physical ground. The same is true if the framing changes after zoom or tracking behavior. Reopen the zone editor and adjust the shape to match the current picture.

Choose the setting that matches the problem
False alerts can come from different causes. Use the control that addresses the unwanted behavior while preserving what you still need.
| Setting or change | Best suited to | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Activity Zone | Ignoring activity in selected parts of the view while retaining focus on a chosen area. | Objects can be detected when only part of them enters the zone. Local Storage still saves all videos, including off-zone activity. |
| Motion Detection sensitivity | Reducing triggers across the camera’s motion-detection behavior. | Lower sensitivity can also make wanted movement harder to detect. Test the result in your own scene. |
| Smart Notifications or Modes/Rules | Reducing or tailoring push alerts when recordings may still be useful. | Notification filters do not necessarily stop Feed recordings for those object categories. |
| Camera repositioning | Removing an irrelevant source, such as a road or moving vegetation, from the view itself. | Review or adjust Activity Zones after changing the view. |
| Privacy Zone | Masking a selected area in the image for privacy. | It does not work as a motion filter: motion can still trigger a video and notification while the private area is greyed out. |
A practical way to choose is to identify what you want to suppress and what you want to preserve. If only one corner of the picture is irrelevant, start with an Activity Zone. If motion across the whole view is generating unwanted triggers, review the field of view and then sensitivity. If clips are useful but the alerts are distracting, look at Smart Notifications or Modes/Rules first. If the concern is seeing a private area in the picture, use a Privacy Zone—but do not expect it to stop motion handling there.
Use notification filters when recordings are useful but alerts are not
Smart Notification categories such as People, Vehicles, Animal, and All Other Motion can be toggled. If, for example, vehicle alerts are distracting but you still want the camera to record activity, adjust notification behavior rather than assuming that disabling a category also stops its Feed recordings. Arlo notes that these notification switches do not necessarily stop recordings for those object categories.
Modes and Rules can also be useful when the desired outcome is to record without sending notifications. The right configuration depends on whether you want to suppress a type of push alert, change what motion is detected, or stop recording in a particular situation. Check the resulting Feed as well as your notifications to confirm which behavior changed.
For troubleshooting, keep the distinction explicit: a notification setting changes the alert experience, while a detection or zone change affects how motion is handled. If the phone stops buzzing but clips continue to appear, that may be the intended result of a notification filter. If clips still show events outside the Activity Zone while Local Storage is in use, remember that Arlo says local storage saves all videos regardless of zone placement. Match the observed behavior to the setting you changed before making a second adjustment.
Activity Zones and Privacy Zones are not interchangeable
Use an Activity Zone to focus motion-related handling on selected parts of the view. Use a Privacy Zone to mask a selected area in the image and recordings, such as a neighbor’s property. Arlo says motion can still trigger a video and notification while a Privacy Zone is greyed out. If your goal is to exclude motion from an area rather than conceal the image, a Privacy Zone is the wrong control; configure an Activity Zone instead.

In short, ask whether the problem is what the camera considers for activity or what part of the picture should be concealed. Those are different jobs. A privacy mask is not a way to draw a detection boundary, and an Activity Zone is not a method for hiding an area in recordings. If privacy is the priority, choose the privacy control and understand that motion can still produce an event; if irrelevant motion is the priority, shape an Activity Zone and review how it affects your particular storage and alert setup.
Check the setup after camera or app changes
Recheck your zone if you move the camera, change its angle, alter zoom, or adjust tracking. Those changes affect the view against which the zone was placed. If the zone editor or labels look different, follow the controls in the current app rather than relying on a presumed zone count or an old menu path. Availability and wording may depend on the app release, firmware, account, and device configuration.

- Cars or passersby keep triggering events: check whether the road or sidewalk crosses the Activity Zone, including at its edge. Tighten or reposition the zone, or aim the camera away from that activity if feasible. If the camera still reacts to unwanted motion across the scene, test a lower sensitivity level and verify that the walkway or entrance you care about remains detectable.
- Trees, flags, or plants cause alerts: keep moving vegetation outside the zone where possible. Consider the camera’s angle and mounting location; Arlo advises avoiding swaying or heat-trapping vegetation and wind-prone mounting spots. Lowering sensitivity may have broader effects, so use it only after refining the view and zone.
- Notifications stop but clips remain: review Smart Notification categories and remember that toggling alert categories does not necessarily stop Feed recordings. Check whether the changed behavior is limited to push alerts.
- Activity outside the zone is stored locally: this is consistent with Arlo’s stated Local Storage behavior. Activity Zones should not be treated as a filter for local recordings.
- The zone no longer lines up with the doorway: revisit it after changing camera position, angle, zoom, or tracking. Disable Auto Zoom & Tracking while configuring because Arlo says it can affect accuracy.
- The test suggested a setting, but behavior did not change: return to Default Mode Settings and adjust the Motion Detection slider directly. Motion Detection Test does not save the setting for you.
Change one relevant control, then observe both wanted and unwanted activity. This makes it easier to tell whether the camera’s framing, zone boundary, sensitivity, or notification configuration is responsible. Menu wording and available controls can vary, so use the current Arlo Secure app interface rather than assuming an exact zone count or a control shown for another camera model.

Why does my Arlo camera keep detecting trees or cars?
A road, swaying branches, or flags may be inside or near the Activity Zone; only part of an object needs to enter the zone for detection. Exclude those areas where possible, adjust the camera angle, and consider the mount and environment. Arlo advises avoiding wind-prone locations, direct sun, rapidly changing temperatures, and swaying or heat-trapping vegetation. Lower sensitivity is another option, but it can affect wanted motion too.
Does the Motion Detection Test save my new sensitivity?
No. Arlo says the test does not save new motion-detection settings. Start at Low, walk in front of the camera from roughly 5–10 feet, and raise the slider until the camera LED indicates detection. Then return to Default Mode Settings and move the Motion Detection slider separately to set the level you want.
Will an Activity Zone stop all recordings outside the zone?
No. Activity Zones focus motion-related handling on selected parts of the view, but Arlo says Local Storage saves all videos regardless of whether activity is inside a zone. Do not treat an Activity Zone as a universal recording boundary.
What is the difference between an Activity Zone and a Privacy Zone?
An Activity Zone focuses motion-related handling on selected parts of the picture. A Privacy Zone masks an area in the image and recordings, such as a neighbor’s property. Arlo says motion can still trigger a video and notification while a Privacy Zone is greyed out, so privacy masking is not a motion filter.
Why do I still get Feed recordings after turning off a Smart Notification category?
Smart Notification categories such as People, Vehicles, Animal, and All Other Motion control alert behavior; Arlo notes that toggling them does not necessarily stop Feed recordings for those categories. If recordings are useful but alerts are excessive, notification filters or Modes/Rules may better fit the goal than lowering sensitivity.
Do I need to redraw a zone after changing camera angle or zoom?
Review it. Activity Zones are placed against the camera’s view, so changes to position, angle, or zoom can make the boundaries miss the area you intended. Arlo also says Auto Zoom & Tracking can affect zone accuracy and advises disabling it while configuring zones.
The Bottom Line
For the Arlo Pro 6, create a focused Activity Zone in the Arlo Secure app, keep roads and moving vegetation outside it where possible, and test the actual Motion Detection slider separately from Motion Detection Test. Use notification controls if you want fewer alerts but still value recordings, and use Privacy Zones only to mask an image area. Recheck zone alignment after any change to camera position, angle, zoom, or tracking; neither zones nor sensitivity settings guarantee that every unwanted event will disappear.
