How Do Scientists Measure and Map Water on the Moon?

Scientists combine infrared spectra, impact-plume chemistry, neutron hydrogen maps and radar to locate water-related evidence on the Moon. Each method senses a different depth, material or proxy, so lunar maps show signals and modeled distributions—not lakes or guaranteed usable reserves.

Scientists do not use one instrument or produce one simple “water map.” They combine infrared spectroscopy, neutron measurements, radar observations, and targeted experiments such as the LCROSS impact. Each method detects something different: a molecular light signature, hydrogen, radar scattering, or material excavated from below the surface. Researchers then align those observations with lunar coordinates and model what the signals could mean. The resulting maps show where water-related evidence is strongest, not where lakes exist or how much water astronauts could immediately extract.

What scientists mean by “water” on the Moon

The word water covers several scientifically different findings. A measurement may indicate molecular water (H2O), water ice, hydroxyl (OH), or hydrogen-bearing material chemically associated with minerals and soil. Those categories should not be merged into one total.

Molecular water and hydroxyl

Early infrared observations detected lunar hydration but could not reliably separate H2O from OH. The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) aboard India’s Chandrayaan-1 found reflected-infrared features consistent with both water and hydroxyl. Principal investigator Carle Pieters explained that “water on the moon” in that work meant water and hydroxyl interacting with rock and dust in only the top millimeters of the surface, not lakes, oceans, or puddles.

NASA’s 2020 report on the airborne SOFIA observatory identified a 6.1-micron feature described as unique to water molecules. That wavelength allowed the team to distinguish molecular H2O from hydroxyl in its observation of the Clavius crater region.

Ice in permanently shadowed terrain

Some polar craters never receive direct sunlight. Their permanently shadowed regions are extremely cold, and NASA reports confirmed ice at some such locations. Ice detections in these cold traps are a different type of evidence from weak H2O or OH signatures measured on sunlit ground. A map that displays both must label the form of evidence and the environment instead of implying that every colored pixel represents the same material.

Hydrogen as a proxy

Neutron instruments detect hydrogen indirectly. Hydrogen changes the population and energy of neutrons escaping from shallow lunar soil, so an area with an unusual neutron signal may contain more hydrogen than its surroundings. The signal does not prove that all of that hydrogen is bound in H2O, nor does it by itself reveal the exact depth or chemical form.

How the main measurement methods work

Method What it detects Where or how deeply it senses Key limitation
Infrared spectroscopy (M3) Wavelength-specific absorption related to water, hydroxyl and minerals Reflected light from the illuminated upper surface; the strongest interpretation concerns the top millimeters Early features could not cleanly separate H2O from OH
SOFIA/FORCAST infrared emission The 6.1-micron signature associated with molecular H2O Sunlit lunar terrain observed from an aircraft above most atmospheric water vapor Individual observations and the 2023 map cover limited areas; SOFIA is now retired
LCROSS impact plume Material excavated when an impactor strikes the surface, including water and ice crystals A targeted location in Cabeus crater near the south pole Very strong local evidence, but not a regional map
Neutron sensing Hydrogen-related changes in neutron populations Approximately 0.8 to 1 meter for the cited Lunar Prospector and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data Coarse resolution; water-equivalent estimates depend on depth, lateral-distribution and chemical-form assumptions
Radar Backscatter and circular-polarization responses that can be compatible with ice Surface and near-surface terrain, depending on the radar experiment Surface roughness can produce similar radar signals

Infrared spectroscopy: reading a chemical fingerprint

An imaging spectrometer records reflected or emitted light across many wavelengths rather than taking a single-color photograph. Molecules and minerals absorb or emit particular wavelengths. Scientists compare each measured spectrum with laboratory and theoretical signatures, remove effects from illumination and temperature, and calculate how strongly a candidate feature is present.

M3 made it possible to map water-related signatures across diverse sunlit areas. NASA’s account reports that signals appeared at many locations and tended to be stronger at higher latitudes. Those measurements are composition-related evidence from the illuminated surface; they are not direct measurements of a buried, recoverable water mass.

SOFIA: separating H2O from OH

SOFIA carried the FORCAST infrared camera in a modified aircraft. Observing above most of Earth’s atmospheric water vapor reduced a major source of interference. In the Clavius observation reported by NASA in 2020, the 6.1-micron band provided a way to identify molecular water rather than treating all hydration as hydroxyl.

The measured concentration was 100 to 412 parts per million in the observed Clavius soil. NASA compared that range with roughly a 12-ounce bottle of water distributed through a cubic meter of soil. The figure applies to the observed area and measurement conditions; it is not a lunar-wide average, a reserve estimate, or a statement that the water is economically extractable.

SOFIA is retired, so its observations are an archived data set rather than a currently operating lunar survey. They remain useful for testing how water signatures vary with terrain, illumination and temperature.

LCROSS: making a subsurface sample plume

LCROSS used an impact experiment instead of relying only on reflected light. NASA deliberately sent the Centaur rocket stage into Cabeus crater near the south pole. About four minutes later, the LCROSS spacecraft flew through the rising ejecta plume and used its instruments to analyze material thrown above the surface.

The mission detected water and later confirmed that water at some locations was present as ice crystals. Because the experiment sampled one impact site, it supplied direct evidence about that location and depth range but did not establish how widespread the deposit was across the crater or the wider polar region.

Neutron measurements: mapping hydrogen indirectly

Cosmic rays and other processes generate neutrons in lunar soil. Hydrogen is efficient at slowing neutrons, so detectors on missions such as Lunar Prospector and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter can identify regional changes in the escaping neutron population. Scientists convert that change into a water-equivalent-hydrogen estimate only after choosing a model for soil composition and hydrogen distribution.

A 2021 NASA technical presentation gives an approximate sensing depth of 0.8 to 1 meter for the cited neutron data. That is an estimate for those summarized measurements, not a universal specification for every neutron instrument. The same presentation describes the regional resolution as coarse. A broad hydrogen anomaly can therefore conceal smaller deposits, a layered distribution, or hydrogen that is not in water molecules.

Radar and supporting remote sensing

Radar experiments examine how the surface scatters radio waves. Circular-polarization behavior can be compatible with ice-bearing terrain, particularly in polar shadows, but radar is not uniquely diagnostic. Rough or blocky surfaces can create similar responses. For that reason, radar interpretations are compared with illumination, temperature, topography, neutron data and infrared observations. NASA’s lunar overview describes the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter as continuing to provide data used to characterize and map resources, including hydrogen.

How a signal becomes a lunar map

  1. Measure the signal. An orbiter, aircraft or impact spacecraft records spectra, neutrons, radar returns or plume chemistry.
  2. Calibrate the instrument. Teams correct detector behavior, viewing geometry, temperature, spacecraft position and—in airborne infrared work—residual atmospheric effects.
  3. Assign a location. Each observation is tied to latitude, longitude, elevation, illumination and terrain such as a crater wall or permanently shadowed floor.
  4. Separate evidence types. A product may display a measured spectral strength, a hydrogen proxy, an ice-likelihood indicator or a model-derived abundance. The legend and accompanying paper determine which one it is.
  5. Compare neighboring observations. Researchers look for repeatable patterns, such as stronger signatures at higher latitudes or on colder, shaded slopes, while checking whether temperature or roughness could explain the pattern.
  6. State the assumptions. A hydrogen map requires assumptions about depth and chemical form. A radar map requires assumptions about surface roughness. A relative infrared map may show where a signal is stronger without assigning an absolute mass.

This distinction is essential: a colored region on a map may represent a measured signal or a model-based estimate. Neither automatically equals a known quantity of recoverable water.

What the 2023 SOFIA regional map actually shows

NASA’s 2023 account describes a SOFIA map covering about one-quarter of the Earth-facing lunar surface below 60 degrees latitude, extending toward the south pole. SOFIA observed the region in February 2022, and the map was reported in 2023. The footprint is the coverage of that particular product, not complete coverage of the Moon.

The visualization showed stronger water signals on shaded, colder sides of craters and mountains. To show how the signal changed, researchers compared the south-polar observations with a relatively dry equatorial reference region. That procedure produced a relative-distribution map; it did not determine an absolute amount of water across every mapped pixel.

Bill Reach, director of the SOFIA Science Center and lead author of the study, said the data could reveal crater rims, individual mountains and differences between the day and night sides of mountains because water concentrations were higher in those places. Such fine-looking structure still represents variation in an observed signal, not a survey of mineable deposits beneath each feature.

How scientists tell water from hydroxyl

H2O and OH interact with lunar minerals in related ways, which is why the first broad infrared detections were described as hydration. Separation requires a diagnostic feature that responds differently to the two species, together with corrections for temperature and illumination.

The SOFIA Clavius result used the 6.1-micron feature associated with molecular water. M3 data, by contrast, established water-and-hydroxyl-related absorption across sunlit terrain but did not initially provide the same clean separation. Scientists therefore describe the instrument, wavelength and interpretation whenever they report a “water” detection.

Why a water map is not a reserve estimate

  • Different forms are combined in public language. Molecular water, ice, hydroxyl and hydrogen-bearing minerals have different extraction implications.
  • Depth matters. A surface-sensitive infrared signal and a neutron signal that samples roughly a meter do not describe the same layer.
  • Resolution matters. Coarse regional pixels can hide patchy deposits or mix a cold trap with surrounding terrain.
  • Models matter. Converting hydrogen into water-equivalent abundance requires assumptions about where hydrogen sits and what chemical form it takes.
  • Confounders matter. Radar roughness, changing temperatures, shadows, viewing angle and instrument noise can imitate or modify a water-related signal.
  • Accessibility is a separate question. A detection does not establish purity, concentration at a landing site, excavation energy, power requirements or whether a deposit is reachable.

For these reasons, NASA describes the SOFIA-derived map as useful context for prospecting and mission planning, not as proof of extractable water at a particular landing site.

What remains unknown

Scientists are still investigating where lunar water came from and how it moves. Candidate sources include ancient volcanic processes, comets and asteroids, micrometeorites, and chemical interactions driven by the solar wind. None is established as the sole explanation.

Researchers also do not yet know the full global distribution, the detailed vertical profile, or whether water migrates along the surface from warmer areas into colder traps. Resolving those questions requires combining repeated orbital observations with better local measurements and, eventually, samples or instruments operating on the ground.

How to read a lunar-water map responsibly

  • Check whether the legend says H2O, OH, ice, hydrogen or a model-derived water equivalent.
  • Look for the sensing depth and spatial resolution before comparing two maps.
  • Note the date, mission and geographic footprint; an archived regional map is not a current global survey.
  • Read whether colors show absolute abundance or a relative contrast with a reference area.
  • Treat one method as evidence that needs support from other methods, especially where radar roughness or neutron-model assumptions could matter.
  • Do not translate a detection into a quantity of usable water without local confirmation of concentration, form, depth and accessibility.
