How Open-Source App Developers Make Money—and What Happens When You Pay

Open-source apps may be funded by donations, sponsorships, paid services, or subscriptions. Learn what each payment does—and does not—promise.

Open-source app developers may receive donations or sponsorships, earn revenue from services such as hosting and support, or sell paid software tiers. These are different arrangements: a donation may simply support development, while a service or subscription should say what you receive. An open-source license alone does not tell you whether a particular service, hosted version, or extra feature is free.

How can an open-source app developer earn money?

“Open source” describes how software is licensed and made available; it does not tell you how the people who build or operate it are funded. An app may be free to download while its developers accept voluntary support, charge for work around the software, or offer paid features. The details depend on the project and the specific offer.

GitHub describes its sponsorship program as a way for people to financially support open-source projects directly on the platform. Its official Sponsors page says: “GitHub Sponsors allows the developer community to financially support the open source projects they depend on, directly on GitHub.” That explains one route for money to reach contributors, but not how much a developer will receive or whether any particular project can sustain itself. The available sources establish funding mechanisms, not typical earnings or a reliable income level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It helps to separate three questions: who receives the payment, what the payment is meant to fund, and what—if anything—the payer is promised in return. A project may use one method simply to invite support and another to sell a defined service. The words “donate,” “sponsor,” and “subscribe” are not interchangeable guarantees about what happens next.

Donations and sponsorships: support without assuming a purchase

Find the project’s own funding links

If you want to support an app you already use, start with the app’s listing or the project’s official site. F-Droid advises people who want to donate to app developers to use the options listed for each app. Those links may point to services such as Liberapay or Open Collective. F-Droid also accepts one-time gifts and recurring monthly donations for its own work. F-Droid’s donations page explains its options.

An app listing can be a discovery route, not a guarantee about what a payment buys. F-Droid’s developer FAQ describes metadata fields that can link to donation methods including Bitcoin, Liberapay, Litecoin, Open Collective, and Taler. Which methods appear depends on what the project has included. F-Droid’s app-developer FAQ describes that listing metadata.

Follow the link far enough to confirm who the recipient is. A link may take you to an individual maintainer, a project organization, or a funding service that processes contributions. The platform or payment service is not necessarily the person or project being supported. If the listing and payment page name different recipients, make sure you understand that relationship before sending money.

Understand what a sponsorship tier promises

On GitHub Sponsors, eligible contributors can offer one-time or monthly sponsorship tiers. The sponsored account sets the available tier amounts and benefits, so read the selected developer’s description rather than assuming a payment includes a particular feature or service. Eligibility depends on supported regions, and the platform’s terms may change. See GitHub’s contributor information and its page on sponsorships, fees, and taxes.

A sponsorship is not automatically a purchase, endorsement, or agreement that the developer will implement a feature. GitHub says it does not endorse sponsored projects. The platform facilitates payments and displays the terms of tiers; what a particular sponsor receives depends on the offer made by that developer. A tier might describe benefits, but do not infer any additional commitment from the fact that it is called a sponsorship.

Consider the difference between selecting a monthly tier and making a single gift. A monthly payment can continue to support the work over time, while a one-time payment is not a recurring commitment. Check the billing frequency shown for the particular tier and the account’s stated benefits. A contribution can help fund ongoing work without buying a specific deliverable or guaranteeing that a project will meet a development goal.

Paid services: paying for work or responsibility around the app

A company or provider can earn revenue by taking on work related to open-source software rather than charging for exclusive access to the source code. The Swiss Federal Administration’s 2025 Practical Guidelines for Open Source Software in the Federal Administration identify support, maintenance, operation, development, consulting, and training as possible services. It also describes subscriptions as a way to sell standardized services on a recurring basis. The Federal Administration’s 2025 guidance provides the broader context.

For a customer, the important question is what responsibility the provider is accepting. A support contract, managed operation, implementation project, and training session are not interchangeable just because they concern the same software. Before paying, look for a description of the work, the period it covers, what is excluded, and whether the arrangement renews. The provider’s offer—not the software’s open-source status—sets those terms.

For example, a provider selling operation or hosting is charging for taking care of a running service, whereas a maintenance arrangement concerns upkeep of the software. A consulting or development engagement is a different kind of work again. The guidance identifies these as possible service categories; it does not mean every provider offers every category or that any particular contract includes them all. Ask what is included, who will perform it, and how long the commitment lasts.

A standardized service sold as a subscription also differs from a voluntary recurring donation. Both may bill periodically, but the subscription is a paid service arrangement and should specify its scope; a donation is support unless the offer says otherwise. Read the terms for renewal and cancellation as well as the service description, rather than treating the word “monthly” as enough information.

Paid tiers and open core: some features may cost extra

Some companies build a business around an open-source codebase and sell paid subscriptions or additional features. This is often called an open-core model, but it is one company strategy, not a standard feature of open-source apps. A paid tier may include features whose licensing status differs from the open-source code, so check the product’s own descriptions and license information rather than assuming every feature is open source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GitLab’s handbook describes GitLab, Inc. as using an open-core model, earning revenue through paid subscriptions and adding source-available features alongside its open-source code. It also distinguishes stewardship of its open-source codebase from its SaaS services. This is an example of one company’s approach, not evidence that independent app developers generally use the same model. The details are in GitLab’s stewardship explanation.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

In this context, “source available” should not be treated as a synonym for “open source.” Check the license and terms for the particular feature or service rather than relying on a product’s general description. A paid subscription can bundle software features, hosted services, or both; the offer should make clear what the subscriber gets and whether access depends on keeping the subscription active.

Another specialized route is dual licensing: a rights holder may offer the same software under an open-source license and a separate proprietary license, provided the rights and license conditions allow it. The Swiss Federal Administration guidance treats this as an option for companies that own the relevant intellectual property and meet the necessary conditions. It is not something a developer can necessarily do unilaterally with code or contributions owned by other parties.

Dual licensing is therefore not simply a toggle that any maintainer can apply to a whole project. Who owns or controls the relevant rights, and what the existing license permits, matter. If a project includes contributions from other people, a company should not imply that it can offer a separate proprietary license for all of that code unless it has the rights to do so.

What happens when you pay?

The payment method alone does not settle what you receive. Read the recipient and terms of the specific offer. This comparison shows the key distinction:

Payment type What the payment is for What to verify
Donation Financial support for the named recipient; a specific deliverable is not implied. Recipient and whether the payment is one-time or recurring.
Sponsorship A contribution at a tier selected from options set by the sponsored account. Tier amount, billing frequency, stated benefits, and eligibility. GitHub supports one-time and monthly tiers; benefits are set by the account. Source
Service or service subscription Work such as support, maintenance, operation, development, consulting, or training. Service scope, term, recurring commitment, and what the provider says it will do. The service categories are described in the Swiss Federal Administration’s 2025 guidance. Source
Paid software tier Access to the features or services included in that product’s paid offer. Which features are paid, their licensing status, and the subscription’s terms, including what happens when it ends.

Do not infer that paying gives you ownership of the code, a say in project governance, priority support, a promised feature, or rights beyond the applicable license and offer. Those outcomes require explicit terms; the existence of a donation link or sponsorship profile does not establish them.

When you are paying for a subscription, also distinguish access to an ongoing service from rights to the software itself. Ending a subscription may affect access to the paid service or tier as described by its terms; it does not automatically tell you what happens to the open-source code or rights you already have under its license. Check the product’s own terms for the consequences of cancellation or expiration.

How to choose a way to support an app

  1. Start with the project’s own page or app listing. Look for its funding links, and check that the recipient is the developer, project organization, or other party you intend to support.
  2. Decide whether you mean to support or to buy something. If your goal is to help fund ongoing work, a donation or sponsorship may fit. If you need a service or particular feature, find an offer that defines it instead of treating a contribution as a purchase.
  3. Check the payment schedule. Confirm whether the amount is one-time or recurring and how the offer describes future payments. For a sponsor tier, read the developer’s stated benefits; for a service subscription, inspect its term and scope.
  4. Check the recipient and intermediary. A funding platform or payment service may process a contribution without being the developer or project receiving it. Verify the named recipient and any platform fees or terms shown before completing payment.
  5. Review access and licensing separately. If you are paying for a software tier, identify exactly which features are included and whether the offer identifies them as open source, source available, or proprietary. Do not assume a payment changes the license on the project’s other code.
  6. Confirm availability where you live. Platforms and programs have their own eligibility rules, and payment options may not be offered to every contributor or user in every region.

A quick comparison can make the choice easier. If you want to support a maintainer without expecting a particular result, look for a donation or sponsorship and confirm the recipient and schedule. If you need a defined result—such as support, training, or a hosted service—look for a provider’s service description and terms. If you want access to extra product features, compare the paid tier’s feature list, license information, and subscription conditions with the free or open-source offer.

Why a paid version can coexist with open-source software

Open-source licensing and price answer different questions. A license governs rights to use, inspect, modify, or share code under its terms; it does not by itself establish that related hosting, operation, support, or every product feature must be free. A provider can charge for services it performs, while a company can package additional features or services in a subscription. Whether a particular arrangement is permitted or what rights it grants depends on the relevant license and contractual terms.

That is why a paid version does not, by itself, prove that the underlying project stopped being open source. Conversely, a project’s open-source code does not make every feature in a commercial product open source. Look at the actual code license and the paid offer separately.

Eligibility and program rules are not universal

GitHub Sponsors is available to contributors in supported regions; living in a supported region is part of the eligibility information in GitHub’s contributor documentation. A project being open source does not automatically mean its maintainer can use every funding platform or feature.

Other programs can define eligibility differently. For example, GitLab’s open-source program handbook requires OSI-approved licenses and says that an organization qualifying for that program cannot seek profit by selling services, enhancements, or add-ons through it. Those are rules for that program, not a general restriction on how all open-source projects may earn revenue. Consult the program’s current criteria if applying to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does donating to an open-source app developer buy me anything?

Not necessarily. A donation is financial support for the named recipient; a specific feature, service, or other deliverable is not implied. If the project offers a benefit, read the donation or tier description to see exactly what it promises.

What happens when I sponsor an open-source developer on GitHub?

You choose from the one-time or monthly tiers the sponsored account offers. That account sets the tier amounts and benefits, so check the selected tier’s description. Sponsorship does not automatically mean the developer will implement a feature, and GitHub says it does not endorse sponsored projects.

How can I find a way to support the developer of an app I use?

Start with the app’s listing or the project’s official page. F-Droid advises users to use the donation options listed for each app; its app metadata can include links to options such as Liberapay, Open Collective, Bitcoin, Litecoin, or Taler. Confirm who receives the payment and whether it recurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an app is open source, why is there a paid version?

Open-source licensing and price are different questions. A provider may charge for services such as hosting, support, maintenance, consulting, or training, and a company may sell a subscription with additional features. Check the license and paid offer separately: not every feature in a commercial product is necessarily open source.

Does paying give me ownership, priority support, or a say in project decisions?

Not by itself. A donation or sponsorship profile does not establish ownership, governance rights, priority support, or a guaranteed feature. Look for explicit terms in the specific offer and the applicable software license.

Can every open-source developer use GitHub Sponsors or qualify for a program?

No. GitHub Sponsors eligibility depends on supported regions, and other programs set their own criteria. For example, GitLab’s open-source program requires OSI-approved licenses and has rules about seeking profit from services, enhancements, or add-ons through that program. Check current program terms.

The Bottom Line

Open-source app developers can be funded by donations and sponsorships, paid services, subscriptions, or—in some companies—paid tiers and dual licensing. Before paying, check who receives the money, whether it recurs, and what the offer explicitly promises. Paying does not automatically buy ownership, priority support, a feature, or a change in the project’s license.
