After installation, open TV & Video from Media home and follow that service’s sign-in and playback prompts. The exact app list, account requirements, catalog and pricing depend on your country or region and on the provider you select.
What you need before installing
The PS5 itself provides the installation path, but each streaming provider controls its own account, subscription and catalog rules. Have these items ready:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A PS5 connected to the internet and signed in to a PlayStation account.
- The email address and password for the anime service you plan to use, if it requires a separate account.
- An active subscription or other entitlement if the selected service places shows behind a paid plan. PlayStation’s general setup guidance does not define the current plans for every provider.
- A few minutes for an app download and any pending PS5 system update.
No special accessory is required. You can navigate the menus with a DualSense controller. A Media Remote is optional and can be useful if the console is mainly used for television and video.
Install an anime streaming app
1. Open the app catalog
- Turn on the PS5 and wait for the home screen.
- Move to the Media area at the top of the home screen. If the console opens in Games, select Media to switch areas.
- Choose All Apps. This is the main place to browse entertainment apps available for your console and region.
The catalog is region-dependent. An app shown in another country’s guide or on another person’s console may not appear in yours. Use the list on your own PS5 as the availability check rather than assuming that every named service is offered everywhere.
#1 Best Overall
- Media playback controls - Quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward and fast reverse buttons.
- Seamless console compatibility - Power on your PS5 console and navigate its menus directly with the remote for ultimate convenience.
- TV settings - Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter. PS5 system software update may be required.
2. Find the service and download it
- Browse or search All Apps for the anime service you want.
- Highlight the app and select Download.
- Wait for the installation to finish. You can continue using the console while the download runs, subject to your network speed and available storage.
PlayStation identifies the Crunchyroll app as an anime option on PS5. That reference is not a guarantee of availability in every country, so check whether it appears in All Apps on your console. The same regional qualification applies to any other service you are considering.
3. Locate an app that is not on the first screen
If you previously installed an app but do not see it among the recently used tiles, open App Library from the Media area. App Library shows available installed apps and is the place to look when a service is not currently visible in the recent-app row. Select the app there to open it; if it is not installed, return to All Apps and download it.
Open the app and sign in
Use TV & Video for playback
- Return to Media home after the download completes.
- Select TV & Video.
- Choose the installed service or a title surfaced by the console.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for sign-in, profile selection, subscription verification and playback.
Every provider can present a different login flow. One may ask you to type an email and password on the PS5; another may display a code to enter on a phone or computer. Use only the instructions shown by the app you installed, and do not assume that a PlayStation account automatically creates an account with the streaming provider.

PlayStation Support summarizes the limitation this way: “Playback steps vary by app. Check the information provided by the streaming service for details.” That means the provider’s current help pages are the authority for password resets, plan changes, profile settings, simultaneous streams and service-specific errors.

On-demand anime apps
An on-demand app is the usual choice when you want to search for a particular series, resume episodes, manage profiles or watch on your own schedule. Before committing to a service, verify three things in the app and the provider’s current terms:
Rank #2
- All-in-One Media Control: Take command of your entertainment system. This remote is specifically designed for the PlayStation 5, allowing you to navigate the PS5 home menu, control video playback (Play/Pause/FF/Rewind), and manage your 4K Blu-rays and streaming apps without ever reaching for your DualSense controller.
- Universal TV Power & Volume (IR Learning): Replace your cluttered coffee table setup. This remote features built-in IR learning technology that allows it to control your TV’s power, volume, and mute functions. Program it in seconds to work with most major TV brands (Sony, LG, Samsung, Vizio, TCL, and more).
- Bluetooth 5.0 Connectivity & Easy Setup: No dongles, no line-of-sight issues. Pair the remote to your PS5 instantly via Bluetooth 5.0 for a lag-free . Setup is plug-and-play—simply go to your PS5 [Settings] > [Accessories]> [Media Remote]> [Set Up Media Remote]. to pair and start using it immediately.
- Instant Access Shortcuts: Dive into your favorite content faster. Equipped with dedicated shortcut buttons for popular streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and Spotify, you can launch your favorite apps instantly with a single press, bypassing the main menu entirely.
- Ergonomic Design : Say goodbye to awkward hand cramps. Designed with a comfortable, lightweight grip and a responsive D-pad for precise navigation
- Regional availability: the service must be listed in All Apps on your PS5 and licensed for your location.
- Account and plan: determine whether an account is required and whether the title needs a paid subscription, an ad-supported tier or another entitlement.
- Current catalog: anime rights change, so confirm that the series or season you want is currently offered in your region.
Do not infer a show’s availability from a trailer, an old screenshot or a friend’s catalog in another country. The title page inside the service is the most useful check immediately before you subscribe.
Live TV on PS5
PlayStation also describes Live TV on PS5 as a free option with live channels and on-demand content that can include anime. It is separate from installing an individual subscription app. To start it:

- Select Live TV on PS5.
- Log in with your PlayStation account when prompted.
- Create or link a Sony Pictures CORE account as directed on screen.
- Browse the available channels and on-demand programming.
PlayStation describes this service as free to watch and says it can be controlled with either a DualSense controller or the Media Remote. “Free” does not mean that every anime series is included, and it does not make the service a replacement for an on-demand app. Its channels, catalog, eligibility and account flow may change, so check what is currently displayed on your console.
On-demand versus Live TV
| Question | On-demand anime app | Live TV on PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| How do you access it? | Download the listed app from Media > All Apps, then open it through TV & Video. | Open Media > Live TV on PS5 and complete the account-linking prompts. |
| Is a separate service account possible? | Usually depends on the provider; follow its sign-in screen and current terms. | PlayStation describes PlayStation-account sign-in plus creation or linking of a Sony Pictures CORE account. |
| Does it cost money? | Plan requirements differ by provider and title; verify them before subscribing. | PlayStation describes the option as free to watch, subject to current availability and eligibility. |
| How is content selected? | Search and play titles from the provider’s current regional catalog. | Watch the channels and on-demand titles currently offered by Live TV on PS5. |
| Best fit | A specific series, episode tracking, profiles and watch-anytime viewing. | Casual channel browsing or free anime programming when the current lineup suits you. |
Use the option that matches the title you actually want, not simply the one with the most familiar name. A free channel service can be useful for discovery, while an on-demand app is more predictable for a particular season or episode.
Check regional availability before troubleshooting
App catalogs are not universal. Country licensing, service launches and local account rules can affect whether an app appears, whether a title can play and whether a plan can be purchased. If a service is absent from All Apps, first confirm that your PS5 account region and physical location support it. Installing a different region’s app is not a dependable solution and can create account or payment complications.

When a title is missing inside an installed app, distinguish an app problem from a catalog restriction. Search for another title that is known to be available, check the provider’s current regional catalog information and confirm that the signed-in profile has the expected age or plan permissions. A successfully installed app does not guarantee access to every program it advertises elsewhere.
Fix an anime app that will not start
Use PlayStation’s troubleshooting sequence in order. Test the app after each major step so you know whether the problem is resolved.
1. Check PlayStation service status
Look for an active PlayStation network outage or maintenance event. A service interruption can prevent sign-in or playback even when your home internet is working. If an outage is reported, wait for service restoration before changing the installation.
2. Update the app
- Highlight the streaming app on the PS5 home screen or in App Library.
- Press the Options button on the DualSense controller.
- Choose the update command if one is offered.
An outdated app may fail at launch or during authentication. If no update option appears, the installed version may already be current.
3. Update PS5 system software
Open the PS5 system-software update controls in Settings and install any pending update. Menu wording can change with system releases, so follow the update prompt shown by your console. Restart when requested, then try the streaming app again.
Rank #4
- Media playback controls - Quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward and fast reverse buttons.
- Seamless console compatibility - Power on your PS5 console and navigate its menus directly with the remote for ultimate convenience.
- TV settings - Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter. PS5 system software update may be required.
4. Test the internet connection
- Open Settings.
- Choose Network.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
This test can reveal whether the PS5 is connected and receiving internet access. If it fails, address the console’s network connection before troubleshooting the provider app. A passing test does not prove that the provider’s servers are available, but it narrows the likely cause.
5. Restart the PS5
Use the power menu to restart the console, then open TV & Video and try the service again. A restart can clear a temporary process or connection state without removing the app or account information.
6. Delete and reinstall the app
- Highlight the affected app.
- Press Options and choose Delete.
- Return to Media > All Apps and download the service again.
- Open it through TV & Video and sign in when prompted.
Reinstallation removes the local app installation, not the provider account itself. You may need to authenticate again, so have the provider’s credentials or device-linking method available.
7. Try license and Safe Mode maintenance
PlayStation also lists restoring licenses as a possible step. Use the license-restoration command in Settings, then retry playback. If the problem persists, PlayStation’s Safe Mode tools include clearing the cache and rebuilding the database. Follow the on-screen Safe Mode instructions carefully and select only the maintenance option you intend to use. These steps are general console maintenance; they are not a guarantee that a provider-specific outage, account lock or catalog restriction will be fixed.

Diagnose common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely checks | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| The app is not listed | Region, account location and the All Apps catalog. | Confirm local availability; use another listed service or Live TV on PS5 if appropriate. |
| The app was installed but cannot be found | Recent-app row versus App Library. | Open App Library in Media and launch it from there. |
| The app opens but will not sign in | Provider credentials, account status and service outage. | Use the provider’s current recovery or device-linking instructions after checking PlayStation status. |
| Video will not play | Internet test, app update, system update and title rights. | Run the troubleshooting sequence; if only one title fails, check its regional catalog and profile permissions. |
| Playback stops or menus freeze | Temporary app state, pending updates or network instability. | Restart, update, test the connection, then reinstall if necessary. |
Set parental controls correctly
Do not assume that PS5 console restrictions automatically govern everything displayed inside a streaming app. PlayStation warns that parental-control restrictions may not apply to content in streaming apps. Open the individual service’s account or profile settings and enable its age-rating, maturity or profile controls separately.
For a family setup, check both layers:
- Use the PS5’s family and console restrictions for system-level access.
- Use the streaming provider’s own profile, PIN and age-rating controls for its catalog.
- Test the child profile yourself so you know restricted titles are actually blocked.
- Review settings after a provider changes its app, profiles or catalog policies.
These controls can differ by service and region. The provider’s current support instructions determine which profile features are available.
Make the first viewing session smoother
- Install the app before you plan to watch, allowing time for updates and sign-in.
- Keep the provider’s account-recovery email or phone available in case the PS5 login screen requires verification.
- Check the title’s availability in your region before paying for a plan.
- Use App Library rather than repeatedly searching the recent-app row when an installed service seems to have disappeared.
- If you share the console, create the appropriate provider profiles and confirm which profile is active before starting an episode.
- For frequent media viewing, consider a Media Remote as a convenience; it is not required to install or watch anime apps.
When to contact the provider
Contact the streaming service when the PS5 installs and opens the app but the problem concerns a password, billing plan, profile restriction, device limit or title-specific entitlement. Contact PlayStation support when the console cannot download any apps, repeatedly fails its network or system checks, or shows a broader PlayStation-account problem. Include the exact on-screen error, the app version if displayed, your PS5 system-software status and the troubleshooting steps already completed.
Quick Recap
Quick setup checklist
