Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo set up Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, first confirm that your phone and the specific car or stereo support the platform and connection type you want. Then, while parked, connect by USB and follow the screen prompts, or complete the platform’s wireless pairing steps. Use supported voice controls for calls, directions, messages, and audio; hands-free features do not replace attention to the road.
Before you connect: check compatibility and get parked
Support depends on the phone, vehicle, trim or stereo, and whether you want a wired or wireless connection. A USB port alone does not mean a car supports Android Auto or CarPlay. Check the vehicle manual or manufacturer’s compatibility information for your exact setup; Apple also notes that availability depends on region. For Android Auto’s current device and connection requirements, see Google’s compatibility and requirements guide.

Set up the connection before driving, with the vehicle parked and its infotainment system on. Google’s Android Auto Help says: “Make sure your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.” It also advises: “Drive safely. Pay attention to the road and driving conditions, and always obey applicable laws.”

Wired Android Auto
Google’s published baseline for wired projection is an Android phone running Android 9.0 (Pie) or later, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable. Android Auto is integrated into phones and ordinarily does not need a separate download for use on the car display. Check Google’s current requirements and your vehicle maker’s guidance for the exact combination.

Wireless Android Auto
Wireless projection requires a compatible car or stereo and phone, active data, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google lists Android 11 or later generally, with specified exceptions for some older Google and Samsung phones. Requirements vary by device, so consult Google’s current compatibility guide and the vehicle maker before pairing.
- With the car parked and infotainment on, enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Use the vehicle’s steering-wheel voice-command button or the pairing menu specified by its manufacturer to start pairing.

How to set up Apple CarPlay
Apple’s setup instructions require Siri to be on. For either connection method, consult Apple’s CarPlay setup guide if the labels or pairing steps differ on your vehicle.
Wired CarPlay, including the first connection for some wireless cars
- Start the car and make sure Siri is enabled on the iPhone.
- Connect the iPhone to the vehicle’s CarPlay-capable USB port. A CarPlay or smartphone symbol may identify it.
- Follow any prompts on the iPhone and vehicle display. In a car that supports both wired and wireless CarPlay, the first USB connection may offer wireless connection for future trips.
- If the CarPlay Home screen does not appear automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
Wireless-only CarPlay
- Start the car and make sure Siri is enabled.
- Hold the steering-wheel voice-command button to put the stereo into wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode, following the vehicle manual if needed.
- On the iPhone, turn on Wi-Fi and enable Auto-Join for the CarPlay network.
- On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay and choose your vehicle. Select the CarPlay logo on the car display if the CarPlay Home screen does not open automatically.
Wired or wireless: which should you use?
| Connection | What setup involves | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Connect to the vehicle’s intended USB port and accept the prompts. Android Auto calls for a high-quality USB cable. | The car must support the platform; for Android Auto, the port and cable must support data. Apple recommends trying another suitable cable or port if wired CarPlay fails. |
| Wireless | Pair the phone with a compatible vehicle or stereo. Android Auto’s first setup uses Bluetooth pairing with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on; CarPlay setup uses vehicle pairing mode, iPhone Wi-Fi, Auto-Join, and selecting the car in Settings. | Both the vehicle and phone must support wireless operation. Follow the specific vehicle pairing instructions; a cable cannot add platform support to an incompatible car. |
Choose the mode your equipment supports and that suits your routine. Wired setup involves a cable; wireless setup avoids a cable connection but requires compatible hardware and successful pairing. Neither platform is universally better for every car and phone combination.

Android Auto
In compatible cars, Google says you can use Gemini or Google Assistant by saying “Hey Google,” tapping the display microphone, or pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button. After the tone, ask for a supported task such as calling someone, sending a message, getting directions, or playing music. Assistant availability depends on the device, language, and territory; Google says Gemini is replacing Assistant on most mobile devices and that transition details will continue during 2026. If your phone will not connect
Android Auto
- Recheck that the exact phone, vehicle or stereo, and connection mode are compatible. Google notes that not every car with a USB port supports Android Auto; ask the vehicle manufacturer if compatibility is unclear.
- For a wired connection, try the intended data-capable USB port and a high-quality cable. Follow all prompts, including any update request.
- For wireless setup, confirm Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services are enabled, then repeat the vehicle’s pairing procedure.
See Google’s Android Auto connection steps and requirements guide.
Apple CarPlay
- Confirm CarPlay is supported in your region and by your vehicle, Siri is on, and iPhone software is current.
- For a wired connection, try another suitable cable or CarPlay-capable port.
- For wireless CarPlay, make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on and Auto-Join is enabled for the CarPlay network.
- Select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display if needed. If connection still fails, restart the iPhone and car, check that CarPlay is not restricted in Screen Time, forget the car and pair again, and check for vehicle stereo firmware updates.
Apple lists these checks in its CarPlay troubleshooting guide.
