WorldGuard protects a Minecraft server by combining WorldEdit selections, region membership and targeted flags. Run it on a Bukkit-API server such as Paper or Spigot, install the Bukkit build of WorldEdit alongside WorldGuard, define a region, then explicitly grant builders access. Players who are not members or owners are blocked from building in a newly defined region by default.

What WorldGuard is—and which servers can run it
WorldGuard is a Bukkit plugin for controlling construction and gameplay behavior inside named regions. A region can cover a cuboid or a two-dimensional polygon with a defined vertical range. Within that boundary you can decide who may build, whether players can enter, whether PvP is enabled, whether explosions or fire spread work, whether mobs spawn, and which interactions or commands are allowed.

The server implementation matters. WorldGuard requires a Minecraft server that supports the Bukkit API, including Paper and Spigot. Vanilla servers cannot load Bukkit plugins, and Forge and Sponge server implementations are not supported. WorldGuard also requires the Bukkit version of WorldEdit; installing a different platform build of WorldEdit will not satisfy the dependency.
Install WorldGuard and its dependency
Prepare the server
- Run a Paper or Spigot server for the Minecraft version you intend to use.
- Obtain the WorldGuard JAR and the matching Bukkit WorldEdit JAR.
- Stop the server before changing plugin files. Keep a current backup of the server directory, especially the worlds and plugin data.
Copy the plugin files
- Open the server’s main directory—the folder containing the server JAR and world folders.
- Create a folder named
pluginsif it does not already exist. - Copy both the WorldGuard JAR and the Bukkit WorldEdit JAR into
plugins. Do not unzip the files. - Start the server and wait for the startup process to finish.
- Read the console log for dependency or version errors. A clean startup should show both plugins being loaded rather than a missing-dependency or unsupported-server message.
If WorldGuard does not appear in the plugin list, verify that the files are in the active server’s plugins directory, that the filenames still end in .jar, and that you restarted the correct server instance. If the log reports an incompatible API or missing WorldEdit, use builds intended for the same Minecraft and server versions.

Give administrators the access they need
WorldGuard permissions default to no access. An operator may be able to run commands because of the server’s operator status, but a regular staff account needs explicit permission nodes from the permissions system you use.
worldguard.region.wand— obtain the WorldEdit selection wand through WorldGuard’s region tools.worldguard.region.define— create regions.worldguard.region.list— list regions.worldguard.region.flag.*— manage region flags. Grant a narrower flag permission when your permissions plugin supports it.worldguard.region.bypass.<world>— bypass protection in a specific world. Treat this as an emergency or senior-staff permission, not a normal builder privilege.
Test delegated permissions with a non-operator account. A bypass node can make a staff member appear to build successfully while ordinary players remain blocked, which can hide a configuration error.

Protect your first area
1. Select the boundary with WorldEdit
Give the administrator WorldEdit selection access, then select the area to protect. A cuboid is usually easiest for a spawn building: select one corner and the opposite corner with the WorldEdit wand. For an irregular footprint, use a two-dimensional polygon and set the desired minimum and maximum height. Include the full vertical space in which players could build or interact; a short selection can leave unprotected blocks above or below it.
2. Define the region
With the selection active, run:
/rg define spawn
/region define spawn is the long form of the same command. Region names are unique and case-insensitive, so choose a name that is easy for staff to type and document. Defining the region creates a protection boundary: non-members cannot build there, while members and owners are allowed to build by default.
3. Add builders or staff
Add one player as a normal editor with:
/rg addmember spawn PlayerName
To grant a permission-plugin group, use the group prefix:
/rg addmember spawn g:builders
Owners have administrative control over the region and can be added with:

/rg addowner spawn PlayerName
Use members for people who need to edit blocks and owners for trusted staff who must manage the region itself. Keeping those roles separate reduces accidental changes to flags and membership.
4. Check the result
Inspect the region with:
/rg info spawn
List regions in the current world with:
/rg list
Log out or switch to a test account that is not a member, then try placing and breaking a block at the edge and inside the region. Test from every entrance and at each vertical level you selected. Finally, test with a builder account to confirm that intended editors retain access.
Manage, resize and remove regions
| Task | Command | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect one region | /rg info spawn |
Boundary, owners, members and current flags |
| List regions | /rg list |
Names in the current world |
| Resize a region | /rg redefine spawn |
Make a new WorldEdit selection first |
| Remove a region | /rg remove spawn |
Confirm the name before accepting the removal |
| Force a save | /rg save |
WorldGuard saves in the background; use this after important edits |
WorldGuard normally writes changes after a short delay. Use /rg save when you want to force persistence before a restart or maintenance window. Keep backups of the region data together with the world backup so a rollback does not leave protections out of sync with the map.
Control access with membership, not broad flags
A newly defined region already provides a build boundary: non-members are denied building, while members and owners can build. This is usually safer than applying every available protection flag. Add only the people or groups that genuinely need edit access, and remove access when a project ends.

The available selectors are all, members, owners, nonmembers and nonowners. The g:builders syntax used with addmember refers to a permissions-plugin group; it is different from a flag’s -g selector.
Use flags to change behavior inside a region
Set a flag with:
/rg flag <region> <flag> <value>
Unset a flag by omitting the value. Choose the narrowest flag that solves the problem. Protection flags interact with the normal build result, so a flag is not a substitute for correctly configured membership.

| Stop mob spawning | /rg flag spawn mob-spawning deny |
Denies natural mob spawning according to the flag’s behavior |
For a flag that should apply only to players who are not members, add the region-group selector:
/rg flag spawn -g nonmembers pvp deny
Use the same pattern with all, members, owners or nonowners when the behavior must differ by role. Because these groups are evaluated by WorldGuard, changing a permissions-plugin group does not automatically change a WorldGuard region unless that group was added as a member or owner.

Practical protection recipes
Safe spawn
- Select the complete spawn footprint, including the height from the lowest protected block to the highest reachable building point.
- Run
/rg define spawn. - Disable combat with
/rg flag spawn pvp deny. - Prevent environmental damage with
/rg flag spawn creeper-explosion denyand, where appropriate,/rg flag spawn fire-spread deny. - Add only the spawn-building team as members. Leave ordinary players as non-members so they cannot alter the structure.
Builder-only construction zone
Define the build area, then add the builder group with /rg addmember buildzone g:builders. Keep the region’s normal build protection and avoid granting a world-wide bypass. If the group should edit only this project, remove the group membership when construction is complete.
Private room or club
Define the room, add its owners or members, and use /rg flag secret_club entry deny if non-members must not enter. Add an appropriate deny message so players know why entry failed. Verify that doors, buttons and other interactions behave as intended with a non-member test account.
Combat arena inside a protected hub
Create a separate arena region for the arena boundary and set its PvP behavior. If the arena exists only to change behavior and must not impose a second build restriction, set:
/rg flag arena passthrough allow
Then manage building with the surrounding hub region or a dedicated build region. This prevents a flag-only area from unexpectedly becoming another build check.

Understand overlapping regions
WorldGuard allows regions to overlap, but a player must have build permission in every overlapping region that applies at that location. A builder who is a member of the outer region can still be denied if an inner region also covers the block and the builder is not a member there.
Use priority when regions compete
Assign priorities when one region should take precedence over another. Higher-priority regions are intended for more specific areas, such as an arena inside a general hub. Use parent and child relationships when the inner region should inherit settings from the outer region and override only selected behavior. Document the intended hierarchy so a later resize does not create an accidental rule.
Use passthrough for behavior-only regions
A region created only to set PvP, entry, explosions or another behavior can still affect build evaluation unless it is configured as a passthrough area. Set passthrough allow when that region should not add its own build restriction. Do not use passthrough on a region that is supposed to protect blocks.
Diagnose an overlap denial
- Run
/rg infofor each region covering the location and note owners, members, priority and flags. - Check the player’s membership in every region, not only the region you expected to control the block.
- Identify whether a child or higher-priority region changes the result.
- For a behavior-only region, confirm that
passthrough allowis set. - Retest with a non-operator account; operator or bypass permissions can conceal the real outcome.
Why players can still build—and how to fix it
The server is not running a supported platform
WorldGuard cannot protect a vanilla, Forge or Sponge server. Move the world to a Bukkit-API implementation such as Paper or Spigot, then install the corresponding Bukkit builds of WorldEdit and WorldGuard.
The selection or region is wrong
Inspect the region and test its edges. A selection that stops at ground level, misses an entrance, or covers the wrong world will leave apparent gaps. Redefine it with a fresh WorldEdit selection using /rg redefine <name>.
The player has unintended access
Check both direct membership and group membership. Remove an account with the appropriate WorldGuard membership command if it should no longer edit, and review whether the player has a broad bypass node such as worldguard.region.bypass.<world>.
Best Value
An overlapping region changes the result
Inspect all regions at the block, then correct membership, priority, parent/child inheritance or passthrough as appropriate. Do not solve an overlap by granting a global bypass; that disables protection beyond the one location.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A command is denied
Confirm the staff account has the specific permission node for the operation. WorldGuard’s default is no permissions, so a user may be able to inspect a region but not define it or change its flags. Check the permissions-plugin configuration and retest without operator status.
Changes disappear after a restart
Run /rg save, wait for the background save to finish, and inspect the console for storage errors. Verify that the server process can write to the plugin data directory and that you edited the same server instance you restarted.
Choose a region design before you build it
| Design | Build access | Behavior controls | Overlap approach | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single protected region | Members and owners build; non-members do not | Flags applied directly to the region | Keep boundaries simple | Spawn, shop or one protected structure |
| Outer region with inner child | Access checked in each applicable region | Inner region overrides selected behavior | Use priority and inheritance deliberately | Arena, VIP room or special-purpose zone inside a hub |
| Flag-only area | Use passthrough when it must not add a build check | Focused PvP, entry or environmental rule | Verify interaction with surrounding regions | Changing one behavior without changing construction rights |
| Group-managed build region | Add a permissions-plugin group as members | Flags can target WorldGuard region groups | Review group membership and priorities together | Temporary or permanent builder teams |
Before defining a region, decide who may build, which behavior must change, how it will overlap nearby regions, whether a flag-only boundary needs passthrough, and which staff permission nodes are justified. Writing those decisions down prevents most accidental access grants.
Operate WorldGuard safely over time
- Keep WorldGuard, WorldEdit and the server platform aligned with the same Minecraft version family; read startup warnings after every update.
- Use descriptive, case-consistent region names and record their world, purpose, owners, members, priority and parent.
- Grant builders membership rather than owner status unless they must administer the region.
- Review temporary members and remove them when a build or event ends.
- Back up worlds and WorldGuard data before large redecorations, region deletions or plugin upgrades.
- After changing a flag or boundary, test with an ordinary non-member, an intended member and—when relevant—a staff account without bypass.
- Force a save with
/rg savebefore planned restarts and confirm that the console reports no write errors.
With the supported server platform, the Bukkit WorldEdit dependency, a correctly selected region and deliberately scoped membership and flags, WorldGuard provides predictable protection without turning every staff member into a server-wide bypass user.
