Choose the right Compose log command
Docker describes docker compose logs as a command that “Displays log output from services.” It is the starting point for monitoring output from running containers and investigating issues in a Compose project. Run it in the project context where you normally use Compose commands.

| What you need to inspect | Command | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Output from all project services | docker compose logs |
Displays the available log output for the project’s services. |
| One service | docker compose logs web |
Narrows output to the service named web. |
| One service with multiple replicas | docker compose logs --index 2 web |
Selects a particular container index for the service. Replace 2 with the index you want to inspect. |
| Container lifecycle changes | docker compose events --json |
Streams project container events as one JSON object per line. |
Use the service name from your Compose project when narrowing the command; web and api below are examples, not required service names. With no service argument, the command covers services in the project context. If a service has multiple replicas, --index lets you isolate an individual container rather than combining the service’s output.
View a snapshot or stream live output
Inspect output already available
Run docker compose logs for a snapshot of the log output available when the command executes. The underlying container log retrieval returns output present at execution time. This is useful when you want to check what a service printed without keeping a terminal session open.

docker compose logs
To focus the snapshot on one service, provide its name:
docker compose logs api
Follow new output during troubleshooting
Add -f or --follow to keep the command running and stream new output as it arrives. This is useful while reproducing a failure, restarting a service, or watching startup output. Add the service name when you only need one service’s stream.
# Stream output from all services
docker compose logs --follow
# Stream output from one service
docker compose logs -f web
A follow command is a live stream, not just a larger historical snapshot. Stop the foreground command when you have captured the output you need.
Limit logs to useful history
Show only the most recent lines
Use -n or --tail to limit how many lines are shown from the end for each container. The documented default is all, so set a number when you want a shorter result, such as the most recent 100 lines.

docker compose logs --tail 100
You can combine the line limit with a live stream. The command first gives you a limited recent view and then continues following new output:
docker compose logs --follow --tail 100
Set a time window
Use --since to include output from a time onward, or --until to stop the output at a time. These options accept RFC3339 timestamps or relative durations such as 42m. The underlying container log command also documents Unix timestamps for --since, alongside RFC3339 dates and Go duration strings.
# Output from the last 15 minutes
docker compose logs --since 15m
# Output beginning at a specific RFC3339 time
docker compose logs --since 2026-10-15T09:00:00Z
# Bound output before a relative time
docker compose logs --until 5m
The last example is a time boundary, not a request for the last five minutes: --until limits output to before the specified timestamp or relative time. Use both bounds when you need a defined interval.
docker compose logs --since 2026-10-15T09:00:00Z --until 2026-10-15T09:15:00Z
Time filters and timestamps are especially helpful when investigating a startup failure or restart: narrow the log output to the period around the incident, then compare the printed times with lifecycle events.

Make output easier to read, compare, or share
Compose provides options to adjust how the output is presented. These flags do not change which service produced the underlying output; they make a log view more useful for a particular task.
| Option | Effect | Example use |
|---|---|---|
-t or --timestamps |
Adds timestamps to log lines. | Correlate output with a restart or an event stream. |
--no-color |
Produces monochrome output. | Copy output into a ticket or use it in a pipeline without color styling. |
--no-log-prefix |
Suppresses the service/container prefix. | Reduce prefix clutter when the output is already scoped or when processing it elsewhere. |
For example, add timestamps while following one service:
docker compose logs --follow --timestamps api
For a plain-text capture of output without service/container prefixes, use:
docker compose logs --no-color --no-log-prefix
Keeping the prefix can help distinguish lines when viewing multiple services together. Suppressing it can make a narrow, single-service view less cluttered. Choose the presentation based on whether the reader or downstream tool needs those identifiers.

Inspect a particular replica
A service with multiple replicas can produce output from more than one container. If you need to investigate one container separately, use --index with the service name:
docker compose logs --index 2 web
The index selects the container index for that service. Combine it with the other log options when you need a specific replica’s recent lines or a live stream.
Recommended Free Tools
# Recent output from one indexed container
docker compose logs --index 2 --tail 100 web
# Follow one indexed container with timestamps
docker compose logs --index 2 --follow --timestamps web
This narrows the log scope to an individual container rather than the service as a whole. It is useful when the service has multiple replicas and you are trying to determine whether the relevant output is coming from one instance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a restart with logs and events
Logs show what containers printed; events add lifecycle context. When the log lines alone do not make a restart, health transition, or recreation clear, run the Compose event stream as well. Docker documents docker compose events as a real-time stream of container events for every container in the project.
Best Value
docker compose events --json
The --json option emits one JSON object per line. The event command also accepts --since and --until to bound the event window. Apply a compatible time window to the log view, and compare event times with output from docker compose logs -t.
# Follow project lifecycle events as JSON
docker compose events --json
# Inspect timestamped service output for a recent window
docker compose logs --since 15m --timestamps api
A practical sequence is to first identify when the container’s lifecycle changed in the event stream, then inspect timestamped output around that point. If the event window is known, use --since and --until to constrain both views. If you are reproducing the issue live, follow the relevant service while watching events in a separate terminal.

| Question | Start with | Then narrow or adjust |
|---|---|---|
| What are the services printing? | docker compose logs |
Add --tail 100 for a shorter recent view. |
| What is one service doing right now? | docker compose logs --follow api |
Add --tail 100 to begin with recent lines, or --timestamps to make timing visible. |
| What happened around a known failure time? | docker compose logs --since 15m --timestamps |
Use explicit --since and --until boundaries for a defined interval. |
| Which replica produced the relevant output? | docker compose logs --index 2 api |
Combine with --tail, --follow, or --timestamps as needed. |
| Why did the container restart or change state? | docker compose events --json |
Compare event timing with docker compose logs -t and restrict both to the relevant period. |
Common command adjustments
- The output is too large: add
--tail 100, or narrow the period with--sinceand--until. - You need to watch a failure as it happens: use
--follow; add a service name to avoid following unrelated services. - You cannot line up output with a restart: add
--timestamps, inspectdocker compose events --json, and compare event and log times. - Multiple replicas make the output ambiguous: select a container with
--indexand the service name. - Copied output contains color or repeated prefixes: use
--no-coloror--no-log-prefix, respectively.
These options can be combined to answer a focused question in one command. For example, this follows the most recent 100 lines from one service with timestamps and without color:
Quick Recap
docker compose logs --follow --tail 100 --timestamps --no-color api
