To prevent unauthenticated players from joining, edit the ServerConfig.toml used by your running BeamMP server. In its [General] section, set AllowGuests = false, save the file, and restart the server.

The important detail is selecting the configuration file that belongs to the process you actually launch. BeamMP chooses its configuration, logs, and Resources directory from the server process’s working directory, so changing a similarly named file elsewhere has no effect.

What the guest setting does
BeamMP distinguishes between authenticated players and guests. A guest is a player who has not logged in and is therefore anonymous. The AllowGuests option controls whether those anonymous connections are accepted by the server.
When the option is disabled, the server’s normal admission check refuses guest connections. Authenticated BeamMP accounts are not being disabled by this setting; the change targets players who would otherwise enter without an account.

The official setup example places the option in the [General] section of ServerConfig.toml. The maintenance reference describes it as the switch that determines whether guests may join. Use the configuration setting when you want a simple, server-wide rule with no additional code.
Find the configuration file BeamMP is actually using
Normal home installation
After its first startup, a normal home installation creates ServerConfig.toml beside the BeamMP server executable. That is the first location to check, but the executable’s directory alone is not a guarantee that the file you opened is active.

BeamMP’s manual says the server’s working directory determines which configuration file, log files, and Resources folder the process uses. You can therefore have more than one plausible ServerConfig.toml on a machine if you launch the server from different shortcuts, scripts, services, or terminal locations.
Identify the exact launch method used for the live server. Note the directory from which that process starts, then open the ServerConfig.toml in that installation’s working directory. If you edit a copy belonging to a test instance while the public server runs from another directory, the server will continue using its original settings.
Use the current file format
The current format is ServerConfig.toml. Do not look for, or modify, the obsolete Server.cfg format. Older tutorials can still mention that filename, but BeamMP’s current documentation uses the TOML file.

Step-by-step: block guests with AllowGuests
- Stop the server, or make sure it is not rewriting its configuration. Editing while the process is running can leave you unsure whether the file was saved as intended. A clean stop also gives you an unambiguous restart point.
- Open the active file. In a text editor, open the
ServerConfig.tomlassociated with the running process’s working directory, not an unrelated copy. - Locate the
[General]section. TOML sections are marked by a heading in square brackets. The setting belongs under the heading spelled exactly[General]. - Add or change the key. Enter this line exactly:
AllowGuests = false
If anAllowGuestsline already exists, change its value to the unquoted Booleanfalse. Keep the capitalization and spelling shown here. - Preserve valid TOML syntax. Do not wrap
falsein quotation marks, do not rename the key, and do not place the line inside a different section. Leave unrelated settings unchanged. - Save the file. Confirm that the editor saved the file as
ServerConfig.toml, rather than adding a second extension such as.txt. - Start or restart BeamMP. The running process must load the edited configuration. A file change by itself is not a substitute for restarting the server.
- Perform an operational check. Attempt a connection with a client that would otherwise join as a guest, and inspect the server log for the connection result. This is an administrator verification step; the expected result should be confirmed in your own environment rather than assumed.
Check the edit before troubleshooting anything else
Confirm the section and value
Reopen the saved file and verify that the line is under [General], uses the exact key AllowGuests, and has the Boolean value false. A misspelled key, a value written as text, or a line placed under another section can prevent the intended setting from being read.
Confirm that the process restarted
Make sure the old server process is not still running in the background. If a service manager, batch file, or hosting panel starts BeamMP for you, use that mechanism’s stop and start actions so the same instance is restarted.
Read the log from the same working directory
Because the working directory selects the log location as well as the configuration and resources, the log you inspect is a useful clue. If the expected log does not receive entries when you connect, you may be looking at files from another server instance.
Common reasons guests still appear to be allowed
The wrong ServerConfig.toml was edited
This is the most important path-related failure. Search for every copy only to understand your installations, then trace the launch command or shortcut for the live process. The active working directory, not the result of a general file search, determines which configuration BeamMP reads.
An obsolete Server.cfg was changed
Changing the old configuration format will not configure a current server. Move the change to the active TOML file and use the current key name and section.

The server was not restarted
An already running process may continue using the values it loaded at startup. Stop and start the server after saving, then check the new process’s log while performing your test.
The Boolean syntax is wrong
Use false as a TOML Boolean, not "false" as a quoted string. Keep one setting with the exact spelling AllowGuests; duplicate or misspelled alternatives do not provide a reliable replacement for the documented key.
A different instance is accepting the connection
Multiple installations, test servers, or launch methods can make it look as though the option failed. Compare the process you restarted, its working directory, the log it writes, and the endpoint your client is contacting. Resolve that instance identity before adding plugins or changing more settings.
Use a Lua admission hook for a custom rejection
The configuration switch is sufficient when the policy is simply “no guests.” A server-side Lua resource is useful when you want a specific message or additional admission logic. BeamMP’s official server-side Lua guide documents an onPlayerAuth hook that receives the player name, role, guest flag, and identifiers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe hook can reject a guest before the player joins by returning a message when the guest flag is true:

function onPlayerAuth(playerName, playerRole, isGuest, identifiers)
if isGuest then
return "No guests allowed, please use a BeamMP account"
end
end
How the callback works
playerNameidentifies the connecting player name supplied to the callback.playerRolesupplies the player’s role.isGuestis the Boolean guest flag used by the example. When it is true, the returned text rejects the join and is shown to the player.identifierscontains the identifiers provided for the connection.
The scripting reference recommends checking the is_guest argument in onPlayerAuth because guests are anonymous. Documentation may present the callback argument with that descriptive name, while the official example names its local parameter isGuest; the relevant behavior is testing the guest Boolean, not the spelling of the local variable.
Place and load the resource correctly
Server Lua resources belong in the server’s Resources/Server tree. Put the resource there, make sure it is enabled according to your server’s resource arrangement, restart BeamMP, and inspect the server log for load errors. The same working-directory rule applies: the Resources folder selected by the running process is the one that matters.
When a hook is preferable
Use onPlayerAuth when the rejection message must explain the account requirement, or when admission depends on more than guest status. For a universal guest ban with no custom behavior, the TOML setting has less code and fewer moving parts.
Checking and removing a guest after connection
The scripting reference also documents checks for players who are already connected. MP.IsPlayerGuest(player_id) reports whether a specified player is a guest. If your policy needs to remove an already connected guest, MP.DropPlayer(player_id, reason) disconnects that player and records the reason you provide.
These functions address a different point in the connection lifecycle from the onPlayerAuth hook. The hook can reject the connection during authorization; the inspection and drop functions are for handling a player after an ID is available. They are therefore an option for a broader enforcement script, not a replacement for checking that the authorization callback is installed correctly.
Best Value
Choose between configuration and Lua enforcement
| Approach | Configuration simplicity | Rejection message | Enforcement timing | Maintenance burden | Third-party code |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
AllowGuests = false |
One documented key in [General]; restart required |
Uses the server’s normal connection result; a custom message is not established by the setting | Server configuration controls whether guest joins are allowed | Low; keep the key in the active TOML file after server updates | No additional code |
onPlayerAuth Lua hook |
Requires a server resource, correct placement, and log verification | Can return a message such as No guests allowed, please use a BeamMP account |
Can reject a guest during authorization, before the player joins | Higher; the resource must remain compatible and load correctly across updates | Your own Lua resource, or another resource you install |
| Post-connection Lua check | Requires player-ID handling and a running script | Your drop reason is supplied to MP.DropPlayer |
Checks an already connected player with MP.IsPlayerGuest and can then drop that player |
Higher; ongoing script behavior and resource loading must be maintained | Your own Lua resource, or another resource you install |
For most servers, start with the configuration key. Add an authorization hook only when the policy needs a custom response or further conditions. Combining both can provide a configuration-level default and scripted handling, but every extra layer creates another file location and loading path to verify.
Optional community resource: GuestControl
The BeamMP GuestControl repository describes a resource intended to disallow guests and says to install it under Resources/Server. It is third-party code, not a substitute for understanding the built-in configuration setting.
Before deploying it, review its current files and check compatibility with the BeamMP server version you run. Confirm what it changes, how it reports denials, and whether it conflicts with other authorization resources. If your only requirement is a blanket guest ban, the documented AllowGuests setting avoids introducing that additional dependency.
A practical verification checklist
- Identify the exact BeamMP process that serves players.
- Record its working directory and use the
ServerConfig.tomland log from that directory. - Confirm the file uses the current TOML format, not obsolete
Server.cfg. - Under
[General], verify one exact line:AllowGuests = false. - Save the file with valid TOML syntax and stop any old server process.
- Start the server through the same method used for normal operation.
- Check the corresponding log while testing with a client that would otherwise be a guest.
- If a Lua resource is involved, verify it is under the active
Resources/Servertree and that the log shows it loading. - Use
onPlayerAuthfor pre-join rejection and a returned message; useMP.IsPlayerGuestandMP.DropPlayeronly when you need to inspect or remove an already connected player.
Recommended setup for a straightforward private server
Use the built-in setting first: edit the active ServerConfig.toml, set the Boolean under [General], restart, and verify through the matching log. This keeps the policy in BeamMP’s documented configuration and avoids a plugin placement or compatibility problem.
If players need an explicit explanation when they are refused, add a small onPlayerAuth resource with the documented guest check and message. Keep the resource in the active server Resources/Server tree and treat every update as an opportunity to verify that it still loads. A community resource can provide similar behavior, but it should be reviewed as third-party code before it becomes part of your server’s admission path.
