How to Set Up and Use Typeform URL Parameters

Typeform calls hidden fields URL parameters. Learn where to configure them, how to pass values in links and embeds, and how to use them safely.

Typeform’s “hidden fields” are now called URL parameters. Configure them in your form’s workflow, add values to its link, and Typeform can save those values with responses or use them to personalize questions and control logic.

What Typeform hidden fields are called now

Typeform’s Help Center calls the feature URL parameters, formerly known as Hidden Fields. The values are added to a form URL and can carry information already known about a respondent into the form. Typeform says those values can be stored with responses and used for personalization or source tracking.

For example, a link can pass a campaign label such as source=newsletter, or a first name that the form can use in its text. The values are not secret: they appear in a URL and should be treated accordingly.

How to configure URL parameters in a Typeform

  1. Open the form in your Typeform workspace.

  2. Open Workflow, then Pull data in.

  3. Add or toggle on the parameters you need. Choose Add new parameter to create a custom one.

  4. Name each parameter in lowercase. Use underscores instead of spaces, such as first_name.

  5. Save the configuration, then publish or share the form so the parameters are included in its share URL.

  6. Replace the placeholder value in the link with the value you want to pass. Use & between multiple values; URL-encode spaces, for example as %20.

  7. Submit a test response and check the values in the form’s Responses area.

A simplified example is https://example.typeform.com/to/FORMID#first_name=Jane&source=newsletter. Use your actual form link and the parameter names configured for that form. You can fill values manually or have a CRM or email-marketing workflow generate individualized links.

What you can use URL parameters for

  • Track where responses came from: Pass a value such as source=homepage or a campaign label to distinguish traffic sources.
  • Personalize form text: Pass a known value, such as a first name or product, and recall it in the form.
  • Avoid asking for information twice: If you already have a non-sensitive detail, pass it rather than asking the respondent to enter it again.
  • Branch or segment the experience: Use values in logic so respondents see relevant questions or paths.
  • Compare embed placements: Create separate embed codes with fixed values such as homepage and about to identify which page generated a response.

These are implementation uses, not evidence that URL parameters increase completion or conversion rates.

Use URL parameters in branching and question display

Typeform lets you use URL parameters in branching logic like other form answers. For example, a form can greet a respondent by name when a name value is present, and ask for the name when it is missing. Display logic can also hide a question when its matching parameter has been populated, allowing the respondent to skip a question that does not apply.

Set up the parameter first, then configure the relevant logic or display rule in the form. Test both cases—a link with the value and one without it—before sharing the form broadly.

Choose the right method for an embedded form

Static values in an embed

Configure the form’s parameters, then open the Share panel and follow the embed flow. In advanced settings, turn on Set custom values, replace the placeholders with fixed values, and generate the embed code. You can create multiple embed codes for the same form with different fixed values.

Read values from the containing page URL

To pass values dynamically from the website page that contains the form, configure matching parameters on the Typeform and publish or share it. In the embed settings, enable Read URL parameters. The embedded form can then read corresponding values from the page URL. The names on the page URL and in the form must match.

Email embeds

Typeform documents email embeds with additional prerequisites: the first question must be one of the question types supported in its embed instructions, and the form cannot include a Welcome Screen. Check that article’s current supported-question list before implementation.

Protect personal and sensitive information

URL parameter values can be visible in browser address bars and history, recorded in server, proxy, or security logs, and accessed by connected analytics or marketing tools. Do not put passwords, authentication tokens, payment or bank details, government identifiers, highly confidential business information, or other sensitive or special-category data in a URL parameter.

If a workflow needs to connect a response to a record containing sensitive details, a safer pattern is to pass a non-sensitive internal identifier and retrieve the sensitive information from a secured system. Typeform also warns that if personally identifiable information appears in URLs used with Google Analytics, users should address it in Google Analytics’ Exclude URL Query Parameters settings; recording personally identifiable information may violate Google’s terms. Follow the privacy requirements and policies that apply to your deployment and connected tools.

What happens if you change or turn off a parameter

Typeform warns that renaming a parameter that has already collected responses deletes previously collected responses associated with that change. Check the impact before changing a live parameter name.

Turning parameters off and republishing has a different effect: earlier parameter data is hidden in Responses rather than deleted. Turning the parameters back on and republishing makes that earlier data visible again.
