Start by identifying the exact controller model. Compact Xbox controllers do not share one universal setup or remapping method. The procedure below matches the PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S, including its two rear Advanced Gaming Buttons. A PowerA Nano Enhanced controller and Xbox-branded or third-party models may use different controls, software, or button names, so confirm the model and manual before following a sequence.
Identify the controller before changing anything
Look at the front shell, rear label, packaging, or the controller entry shown on your console or PC. Record the full model name and the Xbox generation it supports. The words compact or enhanced are not enough to establish that two controllers use the same remapping process.

- PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S: uses a USB cable and has two rear Advanced Gaming Buttons labeled AGR and AGL. Its rear-button assignments are made directly on the controller.
- PowerA Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S: is a separate compact product family with its own manual and Gamer HQ App support path. Do not assume the Enhanced Wired sequence applies to Nano.
- Xbox-branded or other third-party compact controllers: may offer no rear buttons, use a console-level mapping menu, require an app, or combine hardware and software profiles. The exact connection and mapping controls are model-specific.
If the model name is unclear, do not press a rear program button at random. Find the manual for the exact product first. A button that looks like a profile or program control on one model may have another function on a different revision.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Locate an available USB port on the Xbox console.
- Plug the controller cable into that Xbox USB port and connect the other end to the controller’s Micro-USB port.
- If the console is off, press the Xbox button on the controller until the console powers on.
- If the console is already on, connect the cable and check that the controller’s connection LED illuminates.
A lit connection indicator confirms that the controller has established its wired connection. If nothing lights, reseat both ends of the cable and try another available console USB port before attempting button programming.
Assign a rear button to a controller input
On this model, the two rear buttons are called AGR (Advanced Gaming Button Right) and AGL (Advanced Gaming Button Left). You assign one supported source input at a time, then choose which rear button should reproduce it.
- Press the Program Button on the back of the controller. The LED Connection Indicator flashes to show that the controller is in assignment mode.
- Press the source button whose function you want to copy. The manual lists A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, LT, RT, left-stick press, right-stick press, and the D-pad as supported source inputs.
- Press AGR or AGL. The selected rear button now performs the source input’s function.
- Repeat the sequence for the other rear button if you want a second assignment.
For example, to make AGR perform the A-button action, press Program, press A, and press AGR. To make AGL perform a left-stick press, press Program, press the left stick inward, and press AGL. The rear button is a duplicate input; it does not remove the original function from A or the stick.

| Shoulder buttons | LB or RB |

| Stick clicks | Press the left stick or right stick inward |
| Directional control | Press the relevant D-pad input |
The manual identifies the D-pad as a supported source. It does not establish that a single rear button can reproduce every direction simultaneously, so assign the particular D-pad input required by the controller’s assignment prompt and verify it in the game.

Clear an existing rear-button assignment
Use the clear procedure when a rear button performs an unwanted action or when you want it unassigned.
- Hold the Program Button for two seconds.
- Wait for the LED to flash slowly. This is the clear-assignment state.
- Press the rear button’s previously assigned source button.
After the stored assignment is cleared, the rear button no longer reproduces that source input. If you do not know which source was assigned, first check the button in a simple game or input-testing screen, then repeat the clear procedure using that source.
Understand where the mapping is stored
PowerA states that Advanced Gaming Button assignments remain in the controller’s memory even after the controller is disconnected. You therefore do not need to repeat the assignment merely because you unplugged the cable or moved the controller to another supported setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPersistence does not make the mapping universal across every controller, console, game, or firmware revision. If the buttons appear to stop working after moving to another device, confirm that the device recognizes the controller, reconnect it, and test the assignment before changing it. Do not clear a working mapping simply because it is not visible in an on-screen Xbox menu; this model’s rear-button assignment is performed on the hardware.

PowerA Nano and other compact models: do not transfer the sequence blindly
PowerA publishes a separate support page for the Nano Enhanced Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S, with its own manual and Gamer HQ App path. That confirms that Nano is a distinct compact product family, not just a smaller name for the Enhanced Wired Controller covered above.
Before pressing any Nano control, locate the Nano manual and check:
- the exact connection port and cable type;
- which buttons, if any, are programmable;
- whether programming is done on the controller, in the console, or in an app;
- how the controller signals assignment mode;
- how profiles are saved and cleared; and
- whether the instructions differ between Xbox Series X|S and PC use.
The same checks apply to Xbox-branded compact controllers and other manufacturers’ models. A rear button may be a fixed system control, a paddle that requires a profile utility, or an input that cannot be remapped at all. Treat the model manual as authoritative rather than relying on the appearance of the controller.
Use Gamer HQ only when your exact model is supported
PowerA’s Enhanced Wired support page links to the controller manual and Gamer HQ App. PowerA describes Gamer HQ on its Advantage Wired product page as a utility for testing and calibration and describes two mappable Advanced Gaming Buttons. Those references make the app useful for supported-model firmware, testing, and calibration work, but they do not establish one identical app workflow for every PowerA controller.

Use the app when the exact model is listed as supported. A sensible support sequence is:
- Install or open Gamer HQ on the compatible device.
- Connect the controller using the connection method required by that model.
- Confirm that the app identifies the correct controller name, not merely a generic PowerA device.
- Check for firmware information, input testing, and calibration tools offered for that model.
- Apply only settings that the model’s manual or the app explicitly exposes, then test the controller in a game.
If the app does not recognize the controller, do not substitute a different model’s profile. Return to the wired connection checks, verify compatibility, and use the manual’s hardware procedure where one is provided.

The controller does not power on or connect
- Reseat the cable at the Xbox USB port and the controller’s Micro-USB port.
- Try another available USB port on the console.
- If the console was off, press the Xbox button after connecting.
- If the console was already on, look for the connection LED after plugging in.
- Check that the cable and controller belong to the intended model and that the console generation is supported.
Do not begin remapping until the connection indicator behaves normally. Assignment mode cannot be confirmed if the controller itself is not connected.
The LED does not flash after pressing Program
Press the Program Button once, rather than holding it, for a new assignment. A normal assignment is indicated by a flashing connection LED. Holding the button for two seconds invokes the separate clear procedure and produces a slow flash. If neither behavior occurs, release the button, reconnect the controller, and verify the exact model manual before trying again.

The rear button performs the wrong action
- Identify which source input the rear button currently copies.
- Hold Program for two seconds until the LED slowly flashes.
- Press that previously assigned source input to clear it.
- Start a new assignment by pressing Program, the desired source input, and AGR or AGL.
Be precise about stick clicks: pressing a stick in a direction is not the same as pressing it inward. Likewise, LT and RT are different source inputs from LB and RB.
The mapping worked, then appeared to disappear
PowerA says the Enhanced controller keeps Advanced Gaming Button assignments after disconnection. First check whether the controller is connected and whether the game accepts the copied input. Test the original source button as well as the rear button. If the original works but the rear button does not, clear and reassign the rear button. If the controller is not detected at all, resolve the connection problem before changing the mapping.
The app cannot test or calibrate the controller
Confirm that Gamer HQ lists the exact controller model as supported and that the controller is connected through the required cable or device path. The app’s availability of firmware, testing, and calibration functions can differ by model. Do not treat a missing app option as proof that the hardware is defective; check the manual and support page for that product.
What to compare when choosing a compact Xbox controller
If you are deciding between compact controllers, compare the features that affect setup and long-term use rather than relying on size alone.

A practical remapping plan for games
Choose a rear-button assignment that removes a frequent thumb movement without creating an input conflict. A stick click, shoulder button, or face button can be useful when the game requires camera control and another action at the same time. Because AGR and AGL simply reproduce supported inputs, the game sees the same command it would receive from the original button.
- Write down the action you want to reach without moving your thumb.
- Confirm which controller input activates that action in the game.
- Assign that source input to AGR or AGL using the hardware sequence.
- Test the assignment in a low-risk area or practice mode.
- If the layout feels wrong, clear the rear assignment and try the other rear button or a different source.
Keep a short record of your preferred layout if you switch games frequently. Since assignments remain in memory after disconnection on the Enhanced model, a remembered layout can affect the next game until you deliberately clear or replace it.
Quick reference
| Goal | Action on the PowerA Enhanced Wired model |
|---|---|
| Connect | USB from an Xbox port to the controller’s Micro-USB port; press Xbox if needed. |
| Assign AGR or AGL | Press Program, press a supported source input, then press AGR or AGL. |
| Clear an assignment | Hold Program for two seconds until the LED slowly flashes, then press the previously assigned source. |
| Keep a mapping after unplugging | No extra step is required; PowerA states that assignments remain in memory. |
| Use an app | Open Gamer HQ only after confirming that the exact controller model is supported. |
The reliable rule is simple: identify the model first, then follow its own connection and mapping instructions. The AGR/AGL procedure is valid for the cited PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller, not a universal recipe for every compact Xbox controller.
